Yes.

It's worth no more than $20.
I need to remember to pick it up, myself.

It's a short 4 part OVA, but it accomplishes quite a bit, unfortunately it decided to finish open-ended. AND THERE WAS NEVER ANY MORE MADE!!

I'm so glad you asked. /images/graemlins/happy.gif Yes, it's definitely worth buying. Granted, it's not really a top-tier title, but as backlist bargains go it's one of the good ones. Fun characters, great animation, and some really sweet action scenes. I only wish there was more of it. And as you note, it's ridiculously cheap now ($5.99 a disc at DDD).

Yup. I grabbed it at 20% off that during their last sale. Dirt cheap.

I got it cheap as well, and I enjoyed it.

I think it is a "B" title, but it is well done. The two disks (2 episodes each - four eps total - but they are OAV episodes so they are a full 30 minutes each) tell a complete story. The end does not leave you hanging.

It is basically a sci-fi/superhero story. I thought the action worked well, and the funny scenes were funny. Also, I thought it was very nicely animated.

Kotono Mitsuishi does a great job as Birdy - she has a lot of fun with it.

For what it sells for, I think it definitely worth it.

Blurb on the cover of the first volume:

"A two-fisted science fiction epic from the director of Ninja Scroll, The Animatrix (episode Program X), X the TV series, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and Cyber City"

Ironically, they don't mention his name on the cover, but the director is Yoshiaki Kawajiri.

I give this a resounding thumbs up!
First, considering the age, this anime has absolutely some of the most intense and well-executed fight scenes I've seen in any anime and in fact, can easily stand up to anime of 2006.
Also, for such a short series, the characters are extremely well-developed. I felt that I knew the main characters better than in many longer 26-episode series.
Also while it might have been easy for the producers to typecast Tsutomu and Birdy into stereotypical roles, I'm glad that they proved more than that. Tsutomu actually proves that he is not useless and Birdy shows that there is some depth to her character.

The only drawback about this anime is that it basically screams "Please make me into a TV series" and you will feel that this anime needs more episodes (even though they do resolve the main plot for these 4 episodes).

DDD has a 4 pack brick containing both of the Birdy discs, Wind Called Amnesia, and Demon City Shinjuku for about $22. Not a bad price.

I actually haven't seen it since it was first released on VHS here but I recall it being a decent series -- nothing spectacular but not bad overall.

Typical of early Madhouse animation. Interesting story, and lots of action. Incredibly poor dub production, but generally not bad. Much like another Madhouse project, Cyber City OEDO 808, I really liked it, though I wish they released it all on ONE DVD instead of two episodes on two discs.
