Good Japanese voicing, subpar English dubbing, or as we call it -- the usual.

Or they just don't care for English dubs, I don't think that makes them idiots. Although they did say it in an "assholish" way.

To some, that IS the usual. You'll find many anime communities with much less favourable views on english dubs in general than this one, and that's just the way it is sometimes. Some people just generally perceive the english dubs to be of lower quality, and I really can't blame them. Usually this would be outside the US... I can't believe how many dub fans there are around here, but that's a different discussion.
I also sent an e-mail to IGN. Can't hurt with more than one e-mail on the subject /images/graemlins/wink.gif I can't believe they did this. It's incredible that they're this stupid. Their grades have been shit and pretty much useless for a long time, seeing as it seems 7.5 is average and a game isn't truly great until it gets a 9.5. Pathetic.

This isn't the first time IGN has mistaken a bootleg for a legit release. I can understand it happening once, but twice? Utter foolishness. So why in the world should a blanket statement from them about dubs be taken seriously? Especially considering that they've contridicted themselves a couple of times on that opinion. They're just too ignorant about anime in general. There was one fellow that they had doing anime reviews who seemed to know what he was doing, but after this nonsense, I can only assume he doesn't work for them anymore, at least in that capacity.

Well, the primary problem is that that's not a review or actual criticism - that's a reaction. (Mind you, by the simple fact that they grabbed a boot for review, the "reviewer" isn't exactly quality material in the first place.) If they can say WHY one is good or not and likewise for the other, great. If they note (like Chris) that they're only reviewing one track and actually review it, great. But a one sentence toss-off comment like that - crap.
Secondly, if a reviewer has that sort of bias going in (and it's one that they seem to be aware of), they really ought to note this in the body of the review.
Of course, I'm expecting journalistic integrity and legitimate criticism from farging IGN. While I'm at it, I'd also like a pony and I want a million dollars.
(Hell, video game journalism in general has been in the crapper since time immemorial - can't we have someone who can actually WRITE write about videogames? The only real exception to this that I've seen has been Jeremy Parrish, who seems to be quite more than competent in the writing department. Everyone else I've seen in the video game scene appears to have literary skills below those of an illiterate moose.)

you should have quoted his whole post. He is also annoyed with the fact that it was a bootleg and sent an email. I don't think he is being elite. He just saying what the people in his area think. He is also saying this is outside the USA, and remember that most dubs are aimed for the USA audience. If you look at it, you are being elite about dubs. I read your insulting post before it was erased, and honestly you don't come to me like a very civil person. To come down on someone like that for having an opinion.
I hope the majority of the dub fans are not like you. You are wrong, some people do care about what he said. I dislike dubs too, but they are a necessary evil so anime keep coming to the USA, so that the "Elite" can have the original japanese language.

I'm talking about the statement in general and not necessarily as if it came from IGN in this context. There's nothing "idiot" about thinking this, because a hell of a lot of people do, and they (we) are entitled to that opinion. It has very little to do with the topic at hand, which is about IGN not being able to identify bootlegs...

No, no, no. I am not being "elite" about liking dubs. If someone dislikes dubs, who am I to tell them that they're wrong? However, when someone says "I hate dubs because they suck," or "How can anyone like those crappy dubs with bad voice actors?" it's a sign of them being biased and trying to push their opinions on others as facts. That's what Naiera does. You don't see me saying that "Dubs rule because they're good," or "How can you watch anime in a language you don't understand?" Also, how are English dubs tailored only for a US audience? The dubs we have here in America are the same dubs people in Canada and the UK have (most of the time, but even when another country has its own dub (like DBZ) it's the same, although with a slightly different script). That remark makes absolutely no sense.
Oh, and your last bit (unless you were being sarcastic) is just another sign of people who prefer anime in Japanese thinking they're better than dub fans. I'm not saying everyone who watches anime subtitled is like that (I would be dead wrong) but you seem to prove my point that a lot of them do.
Absolutely none of this sub/dub debate is necessary. Whether Naiera bashes dubs in other threads is irrelevent here-- his post merely stated that some people dislike dubs (and that such an opinion is just as valid as liking dubs). His post was merely a statement of fact, regardless of how you took it.

They're not, most are reasonable enough so long as you don't accuse them of not qualifying as anime fans for their language preference. Many regulars in ET like myself are neutral, in fact.

And the anime fan majority (in my continent anyway) are entitled to roll our eyes at yet another blanket statement that adds nothing to nothing like the one at IGN. /images/graemlins/happy.gif Because we've all heard that kind of ignorant crap for years and it gets tiresome.

Er, no, I'm not. My point was most dub fans don't get defensive when someone else says they dislike dubs, but most do get defensive when they're told they're not real anime fans simply for their language preference.

The English dubbing is subpar (and that's being generous) and a review is based on opinions... the editor's not necessarily an idiot for thinking that dubs are typically weak.

Perhaps ignorant is a better word. The IGN DVD staff were ignorant enough to mistake a bootleg for legit release, not once, but twice, and that dubbing comments seem to fit right in with the rest of the ignorance in that review. Hell, the only legitimate anime fan they had reviewing for their DVD site was just find with dubbing in general.

Yes he is because he claims that ALL dubbing is usually subpar, which it clearly isn't. This guy is just one of those purist otaku nerds who dislike all dubs because they saw Mew Mew Power on 4Kids TV and use that to generalize the entire world of English dubbing, while praising the Japanese track as ultimately superior, even when the English dialogue is the original (IGPX, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, the Yu-Gi-Oh movie). He's also an idiot because he's reviewing a bootleg while thinking it's the official release. That is the sign of someone who doesn't know what he's talking about. He claims to have the official set from Geneon, when in reality, what he has is actually some crappy DVD rips made by GOKU-4584@ or whoever that he bought off eBay. Total loser. IGN shoudln't even be attempting to review anime, since they always get everything wrong, or as I say, "the usual".

It's his personal observation and preference -- just because it doesn't jibe with yours is no reason to call him an idiot. My preference is to watch anime in the original Japanese as that's how it was created... and the dubs usually are subpar in my opinion. (ever watch Patlabor TV?)
I'll have to admit though, I've been watching Gatchaman with my nephew and the English version isn't too bad -- not enough to get me to watch it dubbed when he's not around, though. It's all part of the experience IMO.

The difference is that one thing is a matter of opinion (talking about dubs in general, most likely based on some level of experience) and the other thing is about right or wrong (identifying a bootleg). The fact that someone dislikes dubs is not in any way related to ignorance, but rather preference. I think you're beating a dead horse because no one's going to convince the other side of anything and it's still not related to the topic.
