The '06 Moé Invitational Tournament - Nomination Phase

Moé - An almost totally definable term. But, who cares?

For the next two weeks, please list any and all anime characters you feel deserves to be considered "moé". Afterwards, all of the nominations will be divided randomly among 6 separate brackets and will face off against each other in 1 v 1 single-elimination polls until we get down to the final 6.

The final 6 will face off in a free-for-all final battle to determine the winner of The '06 Moé Tournament.

Yikes... how the heck do I narrow it down to just a few?

I'm probably going to bias this towards what I've watched recently, and using my own definition of moe (well not that I could use any other), just to try and narrow it down at least a little. There are a lot of awesome or cute (or both) characters that I won't be including, just because, well, it's not what I think of when I think moe. If I used the very broad "love/attraction" definition, the list would be in the hundreds... so I'm not going there =P Hence no Mizuho or Pacifica or Eclaire, even though they're awesome... but the whole thing is still arbitrary as hell =P

Hmm, does Ayuru (Nakago before his powers manifested) from Fushigi Yuugi qualify since as far as the anime goes, you only got to see him as a sweet little boy in a flashback in the last episode? There's a book where you get to see more of him as a child before... the REALLY bad parts of his past happened. I don't know if the flashback is enough to make him count, especially since you don't really see the extent of how sweet and gentle he was in the flashback. :/

It occured to me that, if there is no seperate word reffering to males that fit the general idea of it, that perhaps a moé character is just steriotypically female, leading some to believe that "only females can be moé."

For one, there just aren't nearly as many males in anime as there are females that meet the requirements. Young male characters tend to either be complete brats, fairly self-reliant and independent, or are just too "wussy" to be considered "cute". Young males that are comparable in personality to, say, Sakura or Sasami, just aren't that common. Since they aren't that common, they tend to be forgotten sometimes.

Another factor could be the gender and sexuality of the fans themselves. A straight male may be more inclined to find a little girl moé than to find a little boy of a comparable appearance and similar personality moé. Do many female anime fans bother with trying to figure out what "moé" means and participate in discussions with examples of "moé" males?

I don't see the younger boys getting reffered to as "bishi"s nearly as often as the teens/adults do though. I usually see them get relegated to "SOOOOO CUUUUUUUUUTE!!!!"
I can't think of a single time I've seen anyone call Chiriko a bishi (except for the sketch of him as a 16 or so year old), but I see him get called adorable all the time.
There's also lots of guys that get called "bishi" that would almost never be considered "moé" if they were a girl. Yuri and Leon from Kaleido Star might be "bishies", but as far as being more on the "moé" side of things, Ken's got them beat.

I have to agree. There are a lot of male characters who would be far better described as moé than bishie. Characters who are considered to be bishounen are generally pretty, but when people call them bishounen, they usually mean, "Wow, that guy's hot."

Well, my previous post was more about how Western fans use "bishounen," but even in Japan, isn't moé a different (and rather more specific) concept than bishoujo?

It's fair enough to say that bishounen is the male equivalent of bishoujo, and that makes sense... yet I really think that there's a distinction between what's covered by those terms and what's covered by moé. The best example of this that I can think of is from the manga Gamerz Heaven. The main character looks at Nata, a young boy, and he's overcome by thoughts of "Moé~~~!" It matches the usual description of moé almost perfectly--a desire to protect and cherish the character, but not necessarily something sexual in nature. If he had thought "Bishounen!" in the same situation, it would have had completely different overtones.

Moé is very subjective, of course, but I would say that Momiji is much more moé than Ayame or Yuki--not really because he cross-dresses, but because of his personality and his comparative youth.

I don't read Japanese per se but I can read katakana/hiragana and with a bit of help with some kanji I was able to decipher most of the characters I know.

The top four winners went like this:

1) Nanoha - Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

Seina is weird too (I really want to finish Gokujou Seitokai soon, good show...), but she must have a cult following in Japan somewhere. Interesting. Well, there's probably going to several matches that are going to be tough to decide. Sorry, my mistake /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif. I didn't really pay attention to the brackets, and just noticed that someone did nominate her, but I didn't think she was accepted since I didn't see her name in the master list or anywhere else. If a character like her was acceptable, then I would have nominated several other characters that I held back on because I didn't think that they were moé. Hopefully, most people on this site at least know somewhat of what moé is when they vote. If Sugar actually loses, I'm going to be really upset /images/graemlins/depresse.gif.

Yeah, that's kind of what I meant. I expect Sugar to do fairly well, but to be realistic there is no chance that she's going to win outright. She's not my favorite moé character either, so if or when the time comes, I'll be voting for my favorite. I think she is still pretty strong competition though, but from what I've heard from a lot of people she is a bit of an aquired taste.

Not this match specifically -- I haven't seen Negima so I dont even know who Nodoka is off the top of my head. But I didn't even nominate Osaka as "moe", so should I vote for her if she comes up against someone who I feel *is* moe? Yes, she's my favorite character, but not necessarily moe.

Decisions. I'd like to approach this as more than just a popularity poll (else there are a number of characters I consider not-moe that I could have suggested, but didn't), but when it comes to a character I like versus one I don't know, I guess that kinda seals the deal.

That whole "is she even considered moe" thing is what eventually led to Chiyo-chan's defeat in the ANN Anime Moe tournament, as many of the voters felt that Chiyo wasn't as "moe" as Sakura (from CCS) and Chii.

Let me tell you one thing: this match could give you an idea of how the Sakura/Nodoka match in the ANN tournament will fare, because we're dealing with the same situation here: a girl who is cute, but probably not the type that most people will consider "moe" (Sakura/Osaka) versus the girl from Negima who best fits the definition of "moe" (Nodoka).

Heh to be honest depending on who wins out against who, there could be a lot of interesting match ups. Actually come to think of it. What happens if the final two characters are both people named Moe? Is Moe more more than Moe who considers herself moe? I don't know what I'll do if a pair of twins directly compete with each other. Especially the more identical ones.

Well, I suppose who is more "moe" of a character will definitely enter in as a factor in this tournament, but it probably will primarily end up just being a favorites contest (particularly when the characters facing off are not arguable in their "moe factor")

I'm guessing we will be able to abstain from voting in a particular branch when we don't know either character or don't have any strong feeling either way, right?

Yes, but given the number of characters I'm not familiar with, I might just decide some based on looks. I wouldn't want to abstain from a third or so of the rounds, if not more -- and looks are a big part of moe in my eyes.
