View Full Version : Favorite Character Catch-Phrases and Interjections

Characters can be memorable because of how they look, but frequently they are also memorable because of what they say.
In particular, certain characters will have a particular catch-phrase, interjection, or even a verbal-tic, that you will always associate with him or her.
Personally, the most memorable character interjection that I had heard was always Sakura's "Hoe!" in CCS - it was always so wonderfully cute.
However, then I saw Hana yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers) and heard Tsukushi's "Geh!", (expressing her utter disbelief at times, in the sub version), which was so perfectly timed, that it caused me to burst out laughing many times during the series.
As far as most memorable catch-phrase, for me, it's the "Kashira, Kashira, Gozonji Kashira" (sort of a polite version of the old Mars Blackmon "Do you know, Do you know?) of the Shadow Girls in Utena. That phrase though, really set the stage for the Shadow Girls' Greek Chorus-like commentary, and I definitely missed it when it was switched later in the show to "Gogai! Gogai!" (Extra! Extra!).
What sayings, catch-phrases or interjections by characters (dubs or subs) do you find most memorable?
Are they memorable in a good way (cute, funny, endearing), or do you find some of them to just be annoying?

Atashi no Shimobe! (hazuki of Tsukuyomi)
Ecchi nano wo ikenai to omoimasu! (Mahoro of Mahoromatic)

Ushiko-san! Umao-san! (Ushiko and Umao of KOR-TV)
Study! Study! (english-version of Kintaro Oe of Golden Boy)
Bakabaka. (Ruri-Ruri of Nadesico)
Gambatte kudasai ne! (Kyoko of Maison Ikkoku)
too much else to remember fully.

Sayaka Suzuki's "_____ is the ____ of the year" phrase is rather. Especially since what is filled in the blank varies each time she says it. So it remains fresh. Yeah she's from Pani Poni Dash.
I'm also fond of Shana of Shakugan no Shana and her Urasai thing. Ie "Shut up".
Next we have the classic "Fool" line from Ruri of Nadesico. Which I'm definitely fond of.

Lots, but Ai's "Ippen, shinde miru?" from Jigoku Shoujo is easily the best recent one. The line is delivered beyond perfectly.
And since I just finished watching Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Maron's "Tuyoki ni honki, muteki ni suteki, genki ni yuuki" never got old even after heating it... at least 55 times over 44 episodes, I'd estimate.

I personally like Sakura's "Hanyan" more than her "Hoe" cause it sounds cuter and isn't used as much except for times of serious spazing.
I can't think of any other catch phrases that hasn't been mentioned before.

For some reason, Eclair's signature "Ta-daaaa!" in Kiddy Grade always tickled me. Dunno why really.

Probably my favourite are the various Di Gi Charat "verbal tics": -nyo, -nyu, -gema, -pyo, -geba, -myu, -mya and -payan.
Ayu's "ughuu~~" (from Kanon) is pretty damn cute, too. /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif
As I say every time in these threads, "MOERO!", courtesy of Dilandau in Escaflowne.
(I also like Andrew Francis' "BURN!" in the dub, but that's neither here nor there)
An honorary mention for Isami's "Arienee" ("No way!") in Noein, and all variations of it; I'll see if it's outstayed its welcome by the end of the series, but currently I laugh every time I hear it, which is pretty surprising given I usually hate anime catchphrases...

How can anyone forget "Sailor Moon" :"In the name of the moon, I will punish you!"
Also, Ran's little sister from "SuperGALS!" :"YOU BET!"
Osaka from "Asumanga Daioh": "Get it together. Get it together."
Miaka from "Fushugi Yuugi" : "TAMAHOME!"
Tamahome from "Fushigi Yuugi" : "MIAKA!"
Shampoo from "Ranma 1/2" : "NIHAO!"

Didn't we have one of these threads not too long ago? It's still "lucky-ki" by Sayoko in (the) Melody of Oblivion. Although she doesn't say it as much any more /images/graemlins/depresse.gif.
I think we can incorporate the newest in the form of Wilhelmina's "de arimasu" at the end of every sentence she says in Shakugan no Shana. Since my Japanese is non-existant I don't know what it means though.

One of the local news channels has an advertising campaign that mentions their consumer reports thing. One of the things they tend to say is that they "right wrongs". My brain auto-tacks "and triump over evil!" on at that point, courtesy of our sailor-suited soldier of love. DiC style, yo. Her little intro speach and some of the attack calls from that show are great. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif Well, the intro speaches that aren't unbearably cheesey, anyways.
"Rekka.... SHIN'EN!" And let's not forget the full version in the Tasuki novel that completely rips off of an old-school magical girl. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif "Mahariku maharita yanbura yan yan yan rekka shin'en ma!"
ANY absurd transformation and attack name in a magical-girl show. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif The crazier, the better. Gotta love the absolute travesty the Japanese make of English.
"Mokkori!" - Ryo Saeba
As annoying as Team Rocket is, the motto is almost always fun. Various Pokemon noises are fun to say. I can do Jigglypuff's song perfectly. ^___^
"Ra-ra?"
Gotta love Chichiri's "no da!" Ryuichi from Gravitation tends to use it a lot too, but it's just not as quirky.
Tenchi just isn't Tenchi without his panicked yelps as females overwhelm him. Don't know if that really counts though.
"It's showtime!" - Saint Tail.
"Get back here, Saint Tail!" - Asuka Jr. (Hey, he says it often enough.)
"Dandy Power!" /images/graemlins/wink.gif
"Omae o korosu" - Heero Yuy.
The stuff Miyu says before owning a Shinma.
Elk from Arc the Lad summoning his fire powers.
If there's an anime based on Satomi Ikezawa's Othello, then Nana's "Justice is served!"
"Oh gosh, oh gosh!" Wait, that one doesn't count.... /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

Sorry, if a similar topic has been posted recently. It definitely goes to show that just because I haven't seen one, it doesn't mean that there wasn't one. I have to get better with the search function on this site.
Anyway, I would normally have trouble calling this a catch-phrase because of its sheer length, but I'm currently watching Otogi Zoshi, and Watanabe no Tsuna manages to issue his battlecry/challenge before anyone tries to attack him. Those Heian Era villains are just that polite. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
This is from the subtitles, (even though he says it a lot, I still haven't been able to get all the Japanese figured out yet):
"I am Watanabe no Tsuna, Minamoto no Raikou's most loyal retainer. Take flight if you fear my sword, Onikirimaru! Otherwise, you shall be reduced to mere dust on the road and forever lament your own impotence in the hereafter!"

"I can make the impossible, possible." Mu La Flaga (Gundam SEED) Such a simple, yet awesome quote.
"It's not a problem." and "It's just a coincidence." Sousuke Sagara (Full Metal Panic!) Both of these always crack me up for some reason.
"Louie Punch!" Louie (Rune Soldier) Poor Louie often gets interrupted during his catchphrase.
"It's against my will!" Melissa (Rune Soldier) I've got both the translation and the original phrase (can't spell it out for the life of me) stuck in my head.

Tanaka Rie has uttered her share of favorite catch words, catch phrases, and interjections through characters she has played in anime.
----------
Chii (http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=Chii) in Chobits (2002)

- "Double chop!"
- "Bonkuraazu!" ("Knuckleheads!" "Blockheads!" "Idiots!")
Yomi obviously serves as the model for Tachibana Rei (http://kuma.250free.com/Anime/TachibanaReiWearsShirt_PaniPoniDash.jpg) in Pani Poni Dash! (2005), not only in appearance and demeanor, but in speech as well.
Yukino Satsuki unmistakably patterns the way she speaks as Rei in Pani Poni Dash! after the way Tanaka Rie speaks as Yomi in Azumanga Daioh.

Many anime fans in Japan (and elsewhere) closely identify Tanaka Rie with characters she has played and what they have said, such as Suigintou ("junk," "nyuusankin") in Rozen Maiden and Tomoe Marguerite ("gomikuzu") in My-Otome.
The following example comes from a recent My-Otome thread archived at 2ch.
