Okay, well it sounds good on headphones, I still have yet to get a surround setup for my apartment in Japan, but probably soon.
The video from the new HD masters looks great as well for the most part. The cels, backgrounds, and colors were very well defined. I didn't notice any interlacing artifacts except for a tiny bit during the end credits and watching part of an ep on a software player on force weave yielded no feathering, so the remaster appears to be a near-perfect progressive encode. (I seem to remember some random interlaced frames on the R1s, and this is a definite improvement).
But... there's vertical edge enhancement noticable. Highly disappointing.
I'm still on disc 2, but I think I'll be selling this on Yahoo Japan once I watch through the rest of the episodes on a surround setup, and then wait for a hopefully better high-def version (can edge enhancement be eliminated without making a new master?). A pity such an expensive box set was far from perfect.
Here's some screencaps, look at them in fullscreen to see the edge enhancement (the screencaps probably don't illustrate the problem as well as actually watching it on a HD display):
damn Feddie video encoding! (http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/9026/0083018hn.png) (look at Annie's sidelock and face)
