Bad Anime Couples [Archive]

We've all seen it. The couple that you hate. The two people who are together for the wrong reasons, or are ignoring the better match right next to them. So which ones do you hate the most? (Don't forget the spoiler tags.)

Marmalade Boy Mieko and Nachan. One hint of trouble and he hits the highway. What a man. Satoshi was much better for her. He went to extraordinary lengths to show how much he loved her, and she still went running back to the coward Nachan. She may be a hell of a writer, but she's not too smart.

Angelic Layer Ohjiro and Misaki. What the hell? Kotaro was the one for her, and the story was leading up to it. So why the change in direction? Just so Tamayo can be with him? I don't think so. The manga got it much better. Misaki and Kotaro end up a couple, and Ohjiro and Tamayo are a couple. That works so much better.

You can sign me up in the Nachan haters club. I think she was so use to seeing a failed relationship in her own life that she wanted to start another one on her own. Nothing better than a husband that will hit the road when the going gets tough. She wouldn't know how to deal with a guy who didn't cut out at the drop of a pin.

Definitely agree on that one. It's not that I have a problem with Tamayo being paired with Kotaro. It's just that after all that development that seemed to be going on earlier in the series with Kotaro's crush fell by the wayside. That's not even mentioning the fact that I hate Ohjiro, as well...

Marmalade Boy: You can sign me up too for the Mieko/Na-chan haters club. Although I have more of a problem with Mieko than Na-chan, since she had a perfectly good alternative that treated her like gold and she practically spat on him when Na-chan came back around. I forget his name, but he ended up being one of my favorite characters in that series because he was strong enough to let her go whe he knew he couldn't capture her heart. Nice guys finish last I guess.

Fushigi Yugi: Miaka and anyone. That girl needs to be removed from existence for her total lack of common sense.

Love Hina: I think most of us agree that Naru is a bitch, and Mutsumi (at least in my case) was a far better choice for Keitaro. If only he'd put down that damn picture long enough to see what he had in front of him, I could have been happier about the end.

i disagree...

(Marmalade Boy) i like na-chan, he also did what he did to protect her future.

as for the pairings in angelic layer... i prefer the anime to the manga pairings. anyone can see tamayo had the hots for kotaro from the very begining and they've been together for ages before misaki ever came to the scene. kotaro was dense for not realizing it and once he did well he dropped misaki like a lump of hot coal.

I'm right in the middle of rewatching this and am glad it didn't turn out that way. At the end of the karate demonstration episode, I got the depressing feeling Tamayo was going to get dumped despite her obvious affections for him. That seems to be the fate of secondary characters who sit on their feelings too long. Even after her confession on the beach, I thought she still might wind up out of luck even though he seemed to like Misaki more than she liked him. But after spending some time in the Love Elevator (a recurring CLAMP theme?), he finally came around.

Misaki and Kotaro don't have much in common. Kotaro and Tamayo have a lot in common and she confessed to him first, so I'm all for them being a couple.

Perhaps the manga handles things differently, but I liked how the anime turned out.

As far as the anime goes, I'll agree with you. However, I think Nachan was a much better character in the manga--they have a really good chance as a couple.

I allways enjoy a chance to discuss Angelic Layer, one of my favortite series. Personally i think you're missing the forest for the trees in your analysis.

First off Misaki dosen't end up pair with anyone in the anime. If she and Ohjiro are somehow dating at the end, it's so subtle i've missed it in my multiple viewings of the last few episodes. Yes, Kotaro and Tomayo end up together, which for me felt more natural. For Misaki, the whole point of this whole endevour was to find her mother, which she did, so she complete her goal. So that's why i'm glad they didn't try to make her part of a pairing, it would have just added extra weight to the story.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Ohjiro has a thing for Shuko, Misaki's mom. We see the feelings develope in his flashbacks. I think he dosen't say anything is because of the age diffeance and he knows that Icchan has feelings for her as well, and wants his brother top be happy. But the feelings remain, so that's why he's so determined to beat Misaki int heir fight. He knows the only way to get over Shukop is to beat her in the finals.

Even after he loses, he tells Misaki he's falling in love with her. Remember over the course of the series, many people have compared Misaki to Shuko without her realizeing it. So Ohjiro seems to simply be transfering his feelings toward Shuko to her daughter. But i don't think anything comes of it in the end. .

I don't really agree with this. Although I think Hideki's character is the most annoying and worthless CLAMP character ever, even morons deserve love. Besides the way I see it it's better for him to be hooked up with someone who was manufactured. It keeps the possibility of him adding to the gene pool at zero. A perfect Darwin award candidate.

Super GALS: I would've bet money that Ran and Rei were going to end up together. The first scenes and episodes of the anime certainly led the viewer to assume that would happen (I've watched enough anime to catch implications and "signs"). Then suddenly Aya likes him, and they start dating? No, no, no, and no. Ran and Rei, not Aya and Rei! And then Ran and monkey boy? Boo! Although I have not seen the second season to know if anything happens, I can only assume for now they don't.

I thought that Ran and Rei would end up together too, but I was kind of glad that the show defeated my expectations and didn't pair them together just because they were the alpha male & female of the group. Personally I always rooted for second place (never liked Monkey Boy either...) but *spoiler for second season* I read 2nd Place ends up with Mami (I think that was her name...the chick from Ikebukuro who fought with Ran at the show's beginning).

 I never really saw anything between Ran and Rei. I wanted her to end up with Yuya. But when I think about it, as much as I dislike Tatsuki(he's by far my least favorite character), he's really the best match for her. What with her independence, commanding personality, and huge ego, I really can't imagine her in a serious romantic relationship with someone other than a goofball like monkey boy.

a) put the cell phone on a charger and use a land line if available.
b) use a replacement battery.
c) borrow a friends cell phone.
d) run around like a chicken with it's head cut off yelling at any and everyone who will listen stating that the end of the world is nigh.

Ask yourself what you would do in this situation and then ask yourself what Hideki would do. I think you will see that you aren't very much like him.

Chalk up another one for the Meiko/Nachan hate club. Here's a quote from a previous post of mine, that I made in a topic called "Characters who were unlucky in love which you wish would get paired with someone else instead":
Miwa Satoshi. I really hoped he'd get together with Meiko in the end. He cared about her, made every effort possible so she would get out of her depression and notice him, and was a genuine nice guy. I got the impression that he actually made some progress with her, but then the pansy teacher showed up again (by chance(!), not for Meiko), who previously chose to run away when things got too hot for him for hunting on forbidden grounds and BAM! all efforts were lost from one moment to the other.

I enjoyed Marmalade Boy quite a bit previous to this development, but this left a bad enough aftertaste that I haven't revisited the manga ever since.

Definitely. Normally, I'd refer to the way Seishiro was treated as "receiving a consolation prize", but in his particular case, I don't. Hikaru's a great girl, and Seishiro didn't "settle" for anything.

Still on the Princess Nine subject. I have to agree Hikaru's great and there's nothing wrong with her and Seishiro's relationship. At first I didn't think the two would go good together, but it worked out nicely in the end. Although maybe I should have put this in the "good anime couples" thread /images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

Who else is a bad couple hmmmm... Setsuna and his sister.. arghhhh then again I'm just biased. So maybe not again. :tries to pick another one: It's one of those, not that pair type of things....

Well, I guess, yeah. But I was more concerned that Maria was Brandon's true love and vice versa: they loved each other! But that connection was quickly forgotten or neglected half way through the series. I honestly blame Brandon for shining her away. He didn't want her to get involved with Millenion and instead she ended up screwing with that old geezer... and look how she ended up. What a fucking tragedy. Hard headed tragedy.

I usually don't have a problem with age; sometimes it can be very sweet: (RahXephon spoilers) Haruka is 12 years Ayato's senior. I'll agree with you half-way though... a big age gap can be rather disgusting.

Kimagure Orange Road: Well, as much as I like Hikaru, I have to say that she and Kyosuke made a fairly bad couple. No, NOT because Hikaru was a "whiny bitch" or any such thing (you bastards >:( ), but because she took care of him TOO WELL. If she were always there to do everything for him, he would never have had the impulse to overcome his indecisiveness (which he did to at least some degree). In this respect, Ayukawa was a much better match because she inspired him to "take charge" from time to time, not only of himself in the case of say, school exams, but also just in the case of "doing the right thing" (as seen when he yanks the cigarette out of her mouth in the first episode).
