question: I acquired 2 pan cels... i have the cel, i have the background, and i also have a weird poster looking thing. it's printed on some kind of lamentated paper and has effects... what is it? i have no idea.
anyway, i didn't get the chance to take a picture of it (too big to scan) but i'll do that tomorrow or saturday. just wanted to pose the question. ^-^

Nice acquisition! The digital camera picture worked out quite well. I tried to piece together a multiple scan from an art book a couple weeks ago. ...let's just say I'm even more amazed at how Gabriel can piece those scans together. I was pulling my hair out.

I'm glad you were able to get it and thank you for your summary of events. I think I had better print out that fee schedule as well. This scenario scares the one who has made all of 1 YP/SMJ bid so far (which was quickly trumped). Unfortunately, I've discovered that the Pacific Time zone makes it difficult to be competitive, especially when I'm up late playing games. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Sailor Moon has recently caught my attention, but I've heard it's a rather contentious market for cels. I found out (too late) that a "leg man" should be wary of Sailor Moon. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

It was in a rather flimsy box (like a clothing box) with the seams
firmly taped. I'm glad that the box made it here without getting
damaged as it really wasn't that sturdy.

They did forget one of my cels, though /images/graemlins/sad.gif I emailed and luckily, they
just missed it..didn't lose it or send it to someone else. I would've
thought they'd do a comp mailing as it was their fault it wasn't in this
already big package, but no such luck.

yeah well i had a cel sent to someone else ( the individual emailed me about it)... and i requested shipment a few days later hoping the cel would be included. it wasn't. when i asked i was told a lame-o excuse about how it had basically just arrived even though it had been in storage in the us for like a month. ~rolls eyes~ i didn't want to create bad blood or anything since i still planned on using smj so i didn't forward the email.
i didn't get the cel comped either.

and i had the same thing as gabby. someone taped the bag the cels came in. i was FREAKED out that they had taped some of my cels too... but after a TON of work i managed to get the tape off and the cels out safely.

You should try to find the point in the show this cel comes from. That looks like when at the end of an episode or right before the middle commercial break when some shows like to fade a normal cel into a harmony looking thing for dramatic effect. You might find that laser copy with the wierd effects is the actual "cel" used in the show.

Or it could be nothing. You should check!

Was the forgotten cel rather large? A few years ago I had a very large cel (http://gabriel.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=63534) left out of my shipment (damn I love linking that) and I found out large pancels are stored in a different area than normal cels, so now I always mention if there are very large cels when I request shipment.

My cels were put in this HUGE box that was about 6 inches high, and they were taped to the bottom of the box with what looked to be about half a roll of packing tape. I managed to free them all after some work, but one of the bags was ruined, and I'm not entirely pleased with how they were shipped. It had always been ok before so I was just wondering if my shipment was abnormal or if this was a new trend.

I took Gabby's advice and checked out HxH ep 19... Sure enough, that weird poster-thing is the actual 'cel' used! The actual cel was never seen in the show nor was the background. NEAT! Finally, a 'cel' I can display without worrying about line-fading. ^-^

Well, after waking up far too early on a weekend, it appears that I will have more cel updates coming eventually. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Hopefully, SMJ won't subcontract out the taping jobs to some chimps on these. They all appear to be standard size, so hopefully it won't be a big issue.

Now the long wait begins. This will take some getting used to... I've been used to ~3 days from Animaxis.

My last pancel arrived in a similarly huge box, yet the cel itself was still too large and the ends were curled up and taped to the sides. The cel still wanted to curl after I'd removed it. At first I thought the way it was shipped was at fault (and I was a bit upset about it), but then I noticed the paper sketch likes to curl itself into a complete tube shape if left on its own. So my guess is that the cel, background and sketch were all kept rolled up for a very long time and so I'm less inclined to blame the shipping method; I imagine cels aren't stored in the best of conditions prior to being sold.

That at least is true - large pancels tend to be stored in tubes and it might have even been shipped to SMJ that way, so you can't really fault the SMJ shipping chimps for that. I'd be very irked if they did that to a cel that wasn't already rolled up tho. /images/graemlins/anger200.gif

They're some sort of futuristic hyper-cute. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif The thick black border is different from the other video chibis, but Ichino looks similar in both so I bet your guess is right.

More surprisingly, this one turned up on eBay of all places. I've never seen a Nanami OVA cel on there - ever - until now. I'm especially glad I didn't have to put up a big battle for it. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Ooo, nice closeups. Your P9 cel is especially impressive since Nene's layer is unstuck (like having two cels in one). It must fall pretty early in the series since Kanako(?) still has her green-haired disguise.

I had a couple of other bids on my recent acquisition also, but it still came in for about half of my initial bid and on-par with what similar YHJ cels go for. It was. I have the entire series on VHS which I bought from AnimeVillage.com probably back in 1997 or 1998. Bandai owns the rights and has stated in the past it hasn't sold well enough to be dub-worthy and therefore they won't put it out on DVD. They apparently won't burn the subtitled version to DVD or don't have the rights to do so anymore. I need to make backups of my VHS on DVD so if the tapes rot, I don't lose it.

You should change it so it defaults as a larger image size or something. At 300% magnification it becomes very funky.

However, if you are going to spend this kind of time on Nanami, you should instead work on making her forget all about Makoto, and instead getting with Fatora.

Then make an OVA of this. I'd buy one!

Well, my 1st shipment came in from SMJ last night. It was too exciting an event to try and scan the cels on the same day. That and I crashed early from the excitement. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The cels weren't really the focus of the shipment, but I did get 4 of Sakura Shinguji in. The best one is:

It took me quite a while to figure out what sketches even were, as you may remember /images/graemlins/wink.gif I didn't get a matching sketch until my 1st YUA cel came in... The Sakura cels I put up not to long ago have some nice sketches, but I was only motivated to scan one of them.

As for my AIC cels, I guess I should be happy to have the sketches of bolts, half-buildings and robotic hands, etc...

Other than the change in eye color, I haven't noticed a difference on the art work. However, I need to watch more of the TV series (I'm not even through the first season yet). What are some of the other design differences of note?

I have seen the movie, so I'm sure that would count as newer. Some of the movie cels I have seen look really good, but we'll see how it (I have 1 movie cel so far) translates on the scanner. I'm not sure this oversize cel is going to fit too well...

It takes a while for people to start actively searching your gallery - more will come as long as it stays active. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

And actually - scanning that thing was easy. Single row joins aren't too bad. Its when the cel is squarish so you have to join both horizontally and vertically that scanning becomes a nightmare. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I get a new hit every few days, on average. The ones I've had up for over a year have around a hundred hits. Though cels containing bathing (http://tuffy.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=93473) get three times the usual amount of traffic. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Instead of my normal "I'm updating with cels I bought in 2003" update, I thought I'd instead give a small taste of what I'm buying this year (besides hankens).

First up is a wonderful matched Misao FX set - the cels are labeled B6 and B6' - and aside from the size difference have identical linework. Of course, the coloring is a bit different, as you will note. Both include their matching background as well. (Cut 33 bg1 and bg2)

Meaning its not "one scene" as it were. The characters shown are all different sizes, not consistent with their position on the cel. Thats all. Not my favorite style of hanken...
