Del Rey rocks! Gotta love their translation work! I really really hope they are doing fine in the manga business coz they exactly know how I want my mangas (with honorifics and all).

Though my Japanese is very limited (so I could be mistaken), other than nee-"chan", the translation seems pretty good so far.
Edit: By my nee-"chan" comment, I was referring to the fact that the original used nee-"san", yet the translation used nee-"chan".

I don't understand why they can't just translate the word "sister". :-/

Coz nee-chan sounds more japanese. Which some prefer; its a word more commonly used in manga anyway. Most people are used to it.
Tho in School Rumble's case you could argue, since its her real sister.
But translating it would mean no more "nee-chan power". People who have read it far enough will know what I mean /images/graemlins/wink.gif

A number of people have a problem with how cumbersome "older sister", "younger sister", "older brother", "younger brother" are compared to how compact (o)nee-san, imouto, (o)nii-san, ototo are. This can be circumvented by dropping the relative age specification, but then people would complain about that as well.
Or you can think of it as them thinking ahead to the Itoko - itoko pun (not that I expect them to keep itoko as itoko instead of cousin, but maybe). No matter what was chosen someone would have been upset. It just happens that this time it will be the people who want nee-san translated.

It's the lesser of two evils. Either way, Del Rey (or other companies) gets to be on the spot for trivial cultural translations.

I remember reading "The Dream of the Red Chamber" in World Lit class. The different names for all characters drove people craze (the book is Chinese). MariMite (the anime) drove me nuts with all the names/titles they called each other.
Nee-chan is just cute. If people don't know what Onee/Nee and Onii/Nii are, it's each to find out what it means. For pronouncation, Nee is pronounced 'Nay' and Nii is 'Nee' if anyone doesn't know. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
Edit: Come to think of it, I hear Onee/Onii far, far more than imouto/ototo. Older siblings often call their younger siblings by their name (with/without honorific) than anything else.

When I was younger I used to call my older sister "onee-chan," but now I just call her by her name.
See, when I was younger I respected my sister more. Now that we're grown up and we're more equal (she doesn't boss me around like she used to), I call her by her name.
...Does this make sense?

Today's page is the first of the "suki" puns. I like the fact that while they tweaked the line to play on "love" instead of "suki", Tenma still talks about skiing.

So I take it this is not a high school fighting manga as the title suggests? Or is it just not up to that point?
So far (as of page 7) it looks like a HS romatic comedy?

Except that the romance only lasts for a short while before becoming mainly comedy. Which is kind of sad, I thought the romance really complemented the humor.

Hehe - I just got through filing some photos for my (Chinese-based) family. They include stuff I have for my "mother's older sister", my "father's younger sister", and "the wife of my mother's third-oldest brother". Yes, there is a simple phrase for that last one /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif

I get that from time to time, but I think it just might be from the fact the updates haven't been completed at the time.
