I don't know much about older anime, but for the newer stuff, I would definitely recommend Kita e. ~Diamond Dust Drops~ (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=3210) (Diamond Daydreams). The stories are very touching and not too melodramatic.

Well, the best anime romance I've ever seen is His and Her Circumstances, though it's not exactly a traditional hearts-and-flowers show. Probably why I like it so much. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

One of the very best, funniest Kimagure Orange Road episodes is its Valentines Day episode. The Taste of Love? Kyosuke's Hellish Valentine episode 44.
