After going on another "serious" anime stint, I need to lighten up. And there is nothing better than a festivial episode. Anyone got recommendations for great festival episodes?

Maison Ikkoku has a very good festival episode. Box 2 or 3 IIRC

Any of the three Tenchi festival episodes should do the trick. There are also sports fest and culture fest episodes in Azumanga Daioh. And practically every episode of Mahoromatic centers around one holiday or another, so you can take your pick. Finally, if you're desperate, Hand Maid May also has a festival episode.

I always thought the festival episode in Generator Gawl was pretty funny.

Tenchi in Tokyo has a great two-parter festival episode.
The first episode is about Tenchi and his classmates getting ready for the festival, and the alien girlfriends going to Tokyo, to mess it up.
The second episode is more of the actual festival and includes the whole legendary kiss thing. Heart-breaking ensures!

The Kimagure Orange Road festival episode is a good one. I don't remember which volume it's on though.

If you mean the one where the leads get involved in a class race (I think for a sports festival), it's episode 23 of the series, which would make it disc 6. Or maybe you meant the "I Was a Cat, I Was a Fish" OVA, where there is a brief depiction of a summer festival at the beginning.
Magic User's Club has a culture fest eppie, the eighth one in the series, but there's a sort of prelude episode just before it. I was watching that just the other day. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Sailor Moon usually has great festival episodes.
The best one is in Sailor Moon S when Eugeal (think that's how it's spelt) gets her first mission. Sailor mini Moon also appears in this ep and it's funny as!

That's the one. I thought it might be one of the OVA episodes, but wasn't exactly sure.

Azumanga Daioh has a couple of cultural/sports festival episodes, though that probably wasn't quite what you intended...

Isn't a festival episode a requirement of ANY harem series? I'm having trouble thinking of a harem series in which there wasn't one.

Good point.
That makes me wonder then, though this line of thinking is slightly off-topic - is going to a festival a common date thing in Japan (not in anime, in real life)?

One of the days in the first KOR movie is a festival day - in fact a very important day that adds to the drama. Not light entertainment though. /images/graemlins/knowital.gif
While not a traditional Japanese festival per se, the 2 OVA story Spring is for Idols/Hearts on Fire (same DVD) is a kind of pop festival.

it's a 2 episode ova with the second one being a festival /images/graemlins/wink.gif
At the end of happy lesson, they have a festival.
There's a festival before the end of Neo-Ranga's first season.
In Martian Successor Nadesico there's a "Geki-fest"
There should have been a festival episode for Cromartie /images/graemlins/sad.gif

Wow...just the thought of that made me laugh. I can see Takeuchi freaking out about getting motion sick on an amusement park ride (OK they usually don't have rides at Japanese festivals, but entertain the thought).

You know i just realized something this morning, there was a small scene of them at a sports festival. Still. I would have loved to see a culture festival. See them run a café.
"That's not a coffee urn!"
