Hi

Recently I watched Appleseed and Wonderful Days and I was blown away by the quality of animation. Are there any more animes(series or movies) like this? I'm currently watching Ghost in the shell:Stand Alone Complex which has comparable animation quality. Can anyone please recommend some animes like the ones mentioned preferably with SciFI storyline?

Might want to head over to the Recommendations Forum to ask -- a mod should move it, but if they lock it, Rec is where you want to be.

Sorry didn't see the rec forum. Mods please move it if you want to

Although it's unlicenced as of yet - Macross Zero wins the CGI competition in my book.

Heavy CGI titles= Place Promised..., Voices of a Distant Star, FF: Spirits Within, Blue Submarine No6 (uncut), Karas (when it comes out).

I'd have to agree. Some of the shots that Macross Zero pulls off are visually stunning.

Yukakize IMO has better CG then Macross Zero. Though not licensed yet,Aquarion has some good CG in it.

As ibby stated, Yukikaze is pure eye candy and is a treat to look at. Though IMO, of the big CG anime studios (Gonzo, Satelight, Hal Film Maker among others), Satelight is the consistant best. Gonzo can be a hit or miss if Yukikaze is any indication. With them, something like FF:U would be a miss and uh, Gantz (as much as I like the show the 2D and 3DGC were horribly meshed). A recent visual treat I can recall was Sunrise's joke Mai-HiME trailer. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif Never the less, the CG was good...

Not licensed, but I think that many episodes of "Ashita no Nadja" contain some of the best uses of CG techniques that I've seen in a TV anime.

No contest.

Macross Zero (http://www.macross.co.jp/zero/).

The F-14 and the MiG-29 Fighters dogfighting.

Fighter/Gerwalk/Battroid modes for the VF-0 and SV-51 dogfighting each other in all three modes.

The Cheyenne Destroid vs the SV-51

The QF-Ghost

Heck, even the AFOS was kewl.

You gotta watch the scene with Roy Focker doing a mid-air battroid-transformation of the VF-0S. In the heat of battle, too.

Yeah, Burst Angel looks really nice, but I can't say the same for the story /images/graemlins/tongue.gif. (and I'd chalk the framerate complaint to FUNi).

Another example of good Gonzo would be Kaleido Star, which looks awesome for what it is. Coincidently, it's also a Hal Film Maker anime, but the actual animation production was handled by Gonzo and G&G Entertainment.

Nobody seems to have recommended the two GITS movies, GITS and GITS:Innocence, maybe because they just assume you've watched or plan to watch them. But they have good CGI. Last year's big budget flop Steamboy has excellent CGI -- even the characters, which were all rendered as 3D skeletons though they look like cel-animation. All the Victorian mechanics are CGI. A little known but very beautiful (if somewhat head-trip weird) anime movie called A Tree of Palme is very heavy on CGI and worth watching -- especially if you can handle the slow pacing of something like Innocence. Also, you might want to check out Gonzo Digimation's FLCL, which was their first full CGI production and uses a lot of oddball tricks and sundry weirdness which many people, including me, find brilliant and wonderful.

FLCL is from Gainax and Production I.G.

Last Exile has one of the best blends of CGI and cel animation out of any anime I've ever seen and also the best CGI usage of any GONZO anime to date.

It was like, SO late at night when I wrote that. I know the time stamp says 8:54 PM but no, it must have been really something like 3 in the morning because I had to have been hallucinating from sleep deprivation to s***w up that bad. Sorry, Gainax! /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yukikaze does indeed have great CGI, and the plane designs are great as well IMO. About Final Fantasy:Unlimited, I have only seen the first few episodes, and although the story seemed interesting (I heard it gets pretty bad later on though), the CGI was pretty crappy from what I recall.

i must agree here. the battle scenes are just wonderfully awe inspiring. this was the first show that came to mind.

I agree, but I'm also going to throw in a bone for Gankutsuou as well. Great stuff...

Although it doesn't have tons of CGI, Samurai 7 has some of the best.

Yeah it does! I remember there being some VERY cool bits... Especially when they involved Kyuzo.

I haven't seen anyone mention Stellvia yet. All of the space stuff is CGI but it blended well with the rest of the show. I thought it was really well done.

someone already said "Last Exile" so let's see... "Air" is both visually beautiful and a great story, but it's not licensed (nor do I think it ever will be ::frown::)

Oh! go watch "Voices of a Distant Star" and/or "The Place Promised in Our Early Days"... now!!!!

EDIT - grr, someone already said those, but they're right, they're THE best, go see for yourself

Anyone here seen the "Ashita no Nadja" TV series. I think they do some wonderful CG shots in that. Mainly subtle things, like water and texture effects, but it does what most CG doesn't: adds to the overall effect instead of distracting.

Sorry to be somewhat off topic, but you know what wound make a great CGI motion picture "Onimusha"
