Has anybody heard if the Dragonball Z DVDs have better picture quality than the region 1 releases and do they have any bonus features (making of, etc...)
And are they going to release the original Dragonball series in singles also?

Many will tell you it's better, and they're probably right since it's been remastered and all, though the picture comparisons those people used to "prove" the superior video quality was very one-sided and unsatisfying.

So not really much difference?
What about bonus features (I know they packed quite a few episodes per disc so probably none.)
And any news of a single disc release of Dragonball (non box set I mean?)

Each of the DBZ R2 boxsets had a disc of bonus features. The individual discs don't contain any special features. It's not known whether or not the bonus disc will be available as a single volume, however I am confident it will remain a boxset-only disc. The DBZ bonus features were the Bardock/Trunks TV Specials, the Playdia OVAs, creditless OP/END sequences, a collection of foreign language dub clips from around the world, and various commericals for DBZ products.
The R2 DVDs have less grain, edge enhancement, and print damage than the R1s. The R1s offer a brighter color constrast, whereas the R2s keep the more muted color scheme of the original TV broadcast.
There's been no announcement of singles for the original Dragon Ball, but I'm sure it will happen.

Thanks for the info.
I'm not missing anything I really wanted on those bonus discs so that's no problem.

No, there's a noticeable difference which Thanatos described. To add to that, the big thing about the FUNi discs is the masters they use are of variable quality: some episodes look very clean and sharp but a few are really grainy. Despite that, from what I've seen the FUNi DVDs don't compare too badly considering the R2J is from a remastered source. In fact, I prefer the colors on the R1.
When I said what I did about the comparisons I wasn't trying to say there wasn't much difference. That was just me expressing how dissapointed I was with the way the comparisons were done. Basically, the only episodes that were used to compare were from the first DVDs FUNi released ever. That's what I meant by one-sided. Were those comparisons valid for the specific episodes? Absolutely. Is that enough to call it a fair comparison for the whole series. Absolutely not, but that's how it was presented. The "Frieza" saga discs FUNi released had a bit of video touch-up work done as well and look quite good so I would've loved to see comparisons from some of those episodes. Oh well.
However, the biggest difference in the R1 and R2J isn't the video so much as the presentation. On the R1's, the Japanese OP/EDs are creditless and not always used correctly (wrong opening for some episodes) and there are no next episode previews. A few of the very early discs have "blended" episodes (one OP at beginning of disc, one ED at end of disc). These issues are of course not present on the Japanese discs.

Wow thanks for the great deal of information. I'm in the process of collecting the entire series in Region 1 and was considering getting the Region 2s as well because of the price and number of episodes per disc, so I think I'll be getting the Region 2 releases after I finish with Region 1.
I've kind of gotten obsessed with Dragonball all over again reently.

Just be prepared for no subtitles. The picture quality is supossedly really upgraded but the sound is still in mono, and no subtitles.
I was debating whether or not to buy these R2 DVDs, but I needs my Steve Simmons translations, and the dub (for the younger, sub-hating crowd) so... yeah.

There have been comparisons made for later discs aswell, even over on Daizex, it compares the edited ocean dub, the new "ultimate uncut" first disc and the first DVD of the Z Dragonbox Vol. 1.

Really? Do you have a link by chance, I'd like to give that a look.

Many thanks. And yeah, that's exactly the sort of comparison that I consider fair. It's in favor of the R2J of course but it's not so bloody one-sided. I'd still like to see comparisons from the "Frieza" saga episodes, but that's beside the point. At least there's a DBZ fan or two out there with the knowhow to do proper screencaps without an obvious agenda against FUNi.

That was a great little article and was really helpful when i first read it...its what made me decide to take the plunge with the J R2 release of Dragonball Z and breath a sign of relief for skipping the R1. Its a little expensive getting three volumes a month as they are released but they are in no way flawed and the funimation treatment of that franchise is something thats just left me a little raw so i dont mind...
Even though i may be a little over my monthly budget but just seeing those current 12 volumes of the first anime series i ever saw back in 1993 sitting on my shelf is a great feeling! The cases are beautiful super jewls...the cover artwork is really well composed and well i dont mind browsing a script for the rough translation as i already know whats going on and whats gonna happen! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
Plus this is my first taste of the original Japanese version and its kicks! /images/graemlins/knowital.gif
