I'm thinking about picking up one of the new series in addition to Samurai 7 which those on my Samurai thread helped me with so much. Here are the ones that stood out:

Votoms(Obviously old and being rereleased)
- I don't know much about it. Is the dated animation just too old?

Desert Punk
- Looks cool. anyone know what it' about?

Phantom
- Looked interesting....maybe? lol

Thanks for all the help!

Trust me, you can't go wrong with Samurai 7. It's a great show and you may regret not buying it if you don't make a purchase!

Votoms is good if you like your mecha shows being more about how hardcore the pilot is rather than how powerful the machine is. It's the complete opposite of Gundam in that the machines are just mass-produced tools and it's not up to some randomly selected pilot in a single ultimate weapon. Chirico is pretty awesome as a main.

I've only heard about Desert Punk. Sounds pretty good, but I'm waiting on it myself to see.

Phantom I haven't heard anything about.

But like the other poster said. You really can't go wrong with Samurai 7. One of my all-time favorites.

Armored Trooper V.O.T.O.M.S./SÅ?kÅ? Kihei V.O.T.O.M.S. (Vertical One-man Tank for Offense and Maneuvers) is a classic of the Golden Age of Mecha shows (Early to Mid 80's) and it's the Story of Chirico Cuvie, a man that is just not your average Special Forces Badass that gets involves in a conspiracy that might break the peace that has finally arrived to the galaxy after Eons of War.

There's action, adventure, frienship, politics, conspiracies, mecha battles and a bit of romance as Chirico travels thru the galaxy unraveling the plot and with his enemies on his heels, with express orders to terminate him, but Chirico is not the man to expect death, he will fight every step of his way to victory, it doesn't come any better than this

I give it my highest recommendations

Desert Punk takes place in a post-apocalyptic future (think Mad Max or the Fallout computer games). There is a fair amount of action but at its heart I consider it a comedy. The characters are great and the English dub is ridiculous and really fun to record! The story structure reminds me a lot of the TV show Firefly -- you've got economically-motivated 'mission' stuff (for the action) but also lots of digressions and interpersonal conflict (for the funny). The sexism (and just plain sex) will turn some people off but it's a notch funnier than pure smut.

I have no idea how hardcore anime fans will receive this show. I can tell you that the dub is one that I would pass along to someone who had never watched anime but enjoyed shows like Family Dad, Futurama, etc.

I didn't start working on the series until episode 11 and am really looking forward to the first three volumes so I can finally see what I missed!

Rather than starting another desert punk thread seen as one has already been locked, I figured I#d ask here.
I like the artwork and such on the boxes and have just watched the FUNi trailer, here-in lies the dilema the trailer has done more to put me off the series than to actually watch it.

the "get job done, make money - repeat" monicle of the trailer is this what the show is essentially about? episodic and superficial.

And there was talk of "heronism and decency are luxuries no-one can afford" would I be right in assuming this is not the case for the main character who is indeed heroic and decent, or does desert punk surprise and not have any scruples about doing what needs to be done.

By the end is there a running story or one that is just tacked on to make it seem liek the earler stand alone episodes weren't stand alone.
I'm not a fan of trigun too, seening as trigun seems to be the strongest comparison mentioned for Desert Punk.

No, it does definitely apply to the main character. Basically he's a pervert and an anti-hero.

The first DP trailer (there will be a bunch) gives a limited perspective. I think the series is better represented by these clips on IFILM:

The series is mainly episodic (one- and two-parters), but characters pop up at different parts of the series and the regulars are a LOT of fun. The character Punk is completely unscrupulous, self-centered, and amoral. There are better-grounded people around him and they keep him somewhat in check but left to his own devices he's quite a jerk.

We're working on the end of the series now, and I would say that the "big story arc" is somewhat tacked on and leaves a lot of unanswered questions, but by this point I am interested enough in the characters that it just makes me want to see a second season (c'mon, Gonzo).

Hmmm. I think I liked the original broadcast version with the funny overlays better. It's like the way some bleeped out dialog is actually funnier than when not bleeped. Not sure how keen I am on the dub track either but at least that's optional anyway with the DVD's dual audio. Either way I'll reserve judgement until I watch the first DVD.

If you want more Votoms(Botomuzu!), go to http://www.votoms.net, click "STREAMING" in the lower flash menu, and you'll find trailers for all four arcs, as well as figures and the OVA collection...bear in mind, the trailer for the final arc does have some rather severe spoilers!(No one warned me!)

I just had company over and we watched the all 4 episodes on the Desert Punk #1 DVD. I'll admit, after watching it all the way through I think Funi did a pretty solid job on the dub. They took more than a few liberties in the dialog but the results are hilarious. The "Tits McGee" line still has me snickering. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Fixed your post there, you melded one very funny show and one clunker into.....something. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

In any case i defidently agree with your comaprison of Family Guy to Desert Punk, both shows have me laughing my ass off. I got the first volume last week and loved it. They did an amazing job with the dub, despite a few changes but ntohign to get to worked up over IMHO /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
