View Full Version : I liked "The Soul Taker" so what will I like?

I liked ST not for the story -- which was middle-of-the-road at best -- but because of the hip visuals. The style and design and the way it was animated really appealed to me. So what else would I like? Thinking of things that are stylistically similar, I've already seen Blame (which I didn't much like), and Darkside Blues, and hmmm, would Now and Then, Here and There count? Seen that, too. Seen enough of Hellsing to decide I hated it. Seen Boogiepop Phantom. So let me know what Y'all think. I'm talking graphics and style, not content.
Edit: And don't recommend Nurse Witch Komugi! It's not the same thing at all! /images/graemlins/knowital.gif

Betterman or Project Arms both kinda fit into the same category of unique-ish visuals, although Project Arms' 2nd Season is significantly different looking.
Serial Experiments Lain is a no-brainer (as a suggestion, not as a show...it's a trip!) if you liked Boogiepop Phantom.
And I would probably be shot if I didn't mention Gankutsuou, which is arguably the best show with a unique visual style out there.

You need to get Petite Cossette. Same director, same visual style.

Hmmm, you've piqued my interest...how is it plot-wise? Does it have anything worthwhile beyond the visuals?

Excellent, if a little confusing in places.
Pretty much everything from Akiyuki Shinbo has similarities in the visual style, even Pani Poni Dash and the original series of Lyrical Nanoha have noticable similarities, if not in the colour palette or character design, then certainly in the directorial style.
Petite Cossette is the closest in style of Soul Taker, though. If you don't mind comedy you might want to check out Tsukiyomi -moon phase- when they release it R1 side. Away from Shinbo, I'd second the recommendation of Gankutsuou as being awesome.

I rather liked the show myself, but I must agree parts of it are a bit confusing, and the secondary characters aren't fleshed out much at all...but being that it is only a 3 episode OVA series, I guess that is to be expected. Still a very worthwhile purchase, especially if you liked Soul Taker.

Thanks, all --
Gankutsuou is already on my list but I wait till a series is all released here before I start it. Some of the others I've seen but forgot to mention. However, I'll check out Project Arms and Petite Cossette. Looks like the other stuff DiGiKerot mentioned isn't released in North America yet.

Yes! Very trippy and well worth the price of admission. Even though it gets a bit difficult to nail down, it is still a very satisfying tale of love, obsessive longing and Art as the objectification and ultimate transformation of the subject. Or something like that. /images/graemlins/wink.gif Very highly recommended.
"<font color="green">And don't recommend Nurse Witch Komugi! It's not the same thing at all!</font>" AWWWWW, NO FUN!!! /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Also check out Requiem from the Darkness which uses a different but equally original style of art work in a set of interesting horror tales. Highly recommended.
Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek uses an interesting style which seems to be based on hand shaded prints of computer models and tells another trippy tale. Highly recommended.
Texhnolyze is a very stylized show, however, it is also extremely bleak and downbeat though very well done. Very highly recommended.

Petite Cossette is all style with no substance. You'll find you won't care at all about any of the characters. You should try Requiem from the Darkness. Texhnolyze is only wierd in the start and finish. The middle is just like any other show. It's good but a serious kind of show. I don't remember a single joke. Ending was bizarre too. Kakurenbo is very good but short. 25 minutes.

Yeah, though I wasn't really recommending Lyrical Nanoha or Pani Poni anyway (ones a hot-blooded magical girl show, and the other is a rather odd highschool comedy, so aren't really what you are looking for ^^; ), it was more a general comment about anything Akiyuki Shinbo works on. Funimation have Moonphase licensed, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if we hear a release date pretty soon-ish.
