We've all seen it: on signs, posters, books, computer screens...you name it. Humorous instances of "Engrish" appearing in your favorite anime series.

What are some of your personal favorites? With so many instances of it, I'm sure we've all seen something that was chuckle-worthy. I'll start it all off with one of my favorites, from "Gravion":

1) Status Clitical (http://engrish.com/image/engrish/clitical.jpg)
"Planetaly defense system all destroyed! A deceased citizen: 10,000,000. Status Clitical!"

2) Chrono Crusade: "N.Y., South Brooklym" - Never heard of BrooklyM before. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

3) Stellvia: "Does it make answer?" "It records. After a dial tone please message". "It is transmitting" - From an answering machine.

And if you don't know what Engrish (http://engrish.com/) is, shame on you!

Please post your favorite instances of Engrish here. You don't have to post a link/image...I'm sure the text will be amusing enough.

...and please, please, PLEASE - no "all your base are belong to us!" crap. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

L/R. Every single vocal song in the background. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Oh yeah, there's also the weird Engrish in Fighting Spirit songs. ie "I want to dive lost mind" from the first opening theme.

There's some in Azumanga Daioh too when the teachers run across the foreigner (who turns out to be German, not American like they assume) but I can't remember exactly what they say.

I remember in Dokkoida!? Edelweis hits a button to launch some missiles from a spaceship when the view screen says "Rock On!". /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Haha...I bought that OST because I liked the Billy Preston song so much (I'm a big jazz buff), so I know what you mean. Pretty much every other song on the OST has some terrible engrish going on...which is sad, because the music itself is awesome. After listening to it a couple times though, the engrish doesn't bug you anymore... /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

In Nadesico, I'm amused by Yurika talking to the U.N. (or whatever they call it.) "Can you open za big barrier puhreeeeeeeese?"

And who can forget, in Outlaw Star, <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>"Spit Sperm"</span>.

Yukikaze has some humorous Engrish bits, can't recite them from memory, but it's obvious when heard.

Patlabor (New Files): where text "Battely Check" was later corrected in the following episode.

Samurai Champloo: the Dutch trader trying to speak English.

Ditto that for the opening song to "Zone of the Enders".

The American "baseball team" from Samurai Champloo, and Andy from Cowboy Bebop both had their amusing Engrish moments.

Anyone else have any Engrish sightings from on-screen text?

A classic one:

Usagi in Sailormoon S: Nice to meat you, cream stew! ^_^

The sad thing is, if you try to teach English to Japanese kids long enough, you begin to be amazed that Engrish makes any sense at all.

The kids are honestly great, but English education in this country leaves a lot to be desired.

The name of this shop (http://engrish.com/detail.php?imagename=creamy-prison.jpg&amp;category=Buildings&amp;date=2006-02-07) would make a perfect title for a hentai, don't you think? /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

The Megazone series has some very amusing bits of Engrish.

In Part 2, the main character spends the last half in the show in a biker jacket that says "Sex Wax".

I'm just immature enough to giggle about a video game in Part 3 called "Hard On".

Not always. But I will admit it is funny. Especially in an anime that doesn't try to be serious.

Later in the episode, it is spelled correctly.

Not really engrish, I am always amused to see anime scenes where they are looking at an english newspaper and they just rip an actual page from a real newspaper and stick a picture of a character in there that has nothing to do with the articles. One I remember had some news about English soccer clubs. Of course I always stop and pause at such scenes to see what the article is actually saying!

Something like that happens a few times in Fullmetal Alchemist as well... in one of the flashback episodes, one of the alchemy books that Ed is reading from is actually a review of an RPG book!

while i have many favs in terms of engrish, really, i just love all engrish. and, on the other half of the coin, i'm sure we novices mangle the japanese language just as much. now, for the sheer amount of engrish in one series alone, i firmly believe that honor belongs to Wedding Peach /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

ok. while being engrish, jerry beans is understandable. the japanese don't really have an "l" letter/sound. so when speaking, the "l" letter pronunciation sounds like "r", thus many "L"s become "R"s.
of course, it's still fun /images/graemlins/happy.gif

I think we have to make an exception for brand names. 99% of the time they are altered - possibly out of some desire not to embarrass the original company by assocation with the show. There's few "real" big brands that ever show up.

I remember in the commentary on the first disc of Planetes, that they talked about this. They were looking at a floating plaque about a war/accident if I recall correctly. One of the cast mentioned that they actually took the time to translate it. The director said yeh that they got someone to translate it to english, rather then putting mumbo jumbo on it.

I found that kinda funny /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif.

How about the name of the team from Zillion, the White Nuts (changed to the White Knights for the U.S.)?

I also recall an episode of Bubblegum Crash! in which a sign outside a club Priss was singing at said "Piss".
