How edited is One Piece? I'm sure it has most of the violence and stuff removed because it's Viz but what about the dialogue, how edited is it (like does it say devil fruit or gum gum fruit?)

Actually, violence is usually never a problem with edits from VIZ. I was even impressed that they left the violent 8th volume (http://store.viz.com/product/GNVIA0007/s.GKd6udwu) cover intact with a blood Luffy.

They do use gum gum fruit. Zoro was changed to Zolo after a couple volumes to match with the 4kids anime version. There is a spattering of pirate slang, which some don't like (I personally think it's fun and adds a nice flavor, when it's not overdone).

Overall, I'd the issues with it aren't that big and it certainly hasn't ruined by enjoyment of the title.

A lot of people complained about the pirate slang (um, it's a silly manga about, hey, pirates to begin with..?) but it has toned down quite a bit as of late anyway.

There should be nothing witholding you from buying the Viz release. Zolo/Zoro is just nitpicking and I easily read over that. Other countries are worse off, in france Usopp is called Pipo and Sanji is called Sandy. Not to mention what they're called in Greece or Shanghai.

Yeah. When they first started the series, the pirate slang was way overused (didn't bother me a lot but it still had its annoying moments) but they've toned it down and OP reads much better for it.

One Piece is one of the few Shonen Jump titles that Viz hasn't fucked over too badly. The Zolo thing can easily be read over, as someone else already said. The pirate dialogue is annoying, but can also be overread, though I personally like stephen's translation better than Viz's.

...Wait, what? They use "gum gum fruit" for all the devil fruit, not just Luffy's?

Luffy's. Sorry, I misread the comment. They are all "devil fruit", but the one Luffy ate is of the Gum Gum variety. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Oh, okay. I thought that would be strange (even for Viz /images/graemlins/wink.gif ) to call them all gum gum fruit.

Is that how it was done in the original Japanese version.

Overall, the manga version is way better than the anime version in terms of edits.

Ehh...the latest Shonen Jump has now officially changed Logue Town to Rogue Town, and they edited one of the Marine signs. For shame, Viz.

While that doesn't bother me that much, I will drop the series if they change Smoker's name to Chaser, or Ace's name to Trace. There's a point where blindly following 4kids around has to stop. And I have to say, Coco Village and Rogue Town don't make me very optimistic about Smoker's name.

well I can forgive them for Logue to Rogue.. R and L is kind of interchangeable... /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif But Viz is following the marine to navy change.. right?

That would suck major *** if they changed Smoker to Chaser and Ace to Trace :\
But then again they changed his name because they edited out the cigars, which the manga probably will not. So there is some hope they'll just keep Smoker.

Any other names they DIDNT change in the manga but were altered in the anime?

Zoro to Zolo. And yes, I do count that as a change, because Viz called him Zoro for the first four volumes, and then only changed it to Zolo once the anime got going. They also used Klahadore instead of Kurahadol, Genzo instead of Gen-san, and refer to all Marines as the Navy, but other than that none come to mind.

Really, Marines to Navy?
I remember very clearly in volume 9, that Marine guy that had a face like a mouse, had "Marine" written on his hat.

Is Kurahadol the official spelling?

I always wondered if the Zoro-Zolo change was actually a rights issue? I know it changed when the anime came out, but does anyone know about this?

barbapapa
03-04-2006, 06:49 PM
What I heard was: They changed it to Zolo cause they were afraid with the start of the anime it would get too much exposure and that would cause some possible trouble with the rights of the name Zoro/Zorro.

But I don't know if this is a load of crock.

And "MARINES" is written on the ship's sail.

I remember a lot of discussion about that when this first came out, but nothing definitive (since the companies made no statement). Zorro/Zoro is already trademarked for just about everything under the sun--not only for animation and comics but for dozens of different possible character goods.

Yes. But they are referred to as the Navy when they are mentioned by any character, which makes no sense.

There's been a lot of confusion about the whole navy/marine thing for a long time. Predating Viz translations. They are a 'navy' but the literature refers to them as 'marine' (not The Marines)... and thus, everyone gets screwed up. (I found an old thread up at the arlong park forums about the whole thing. According to them, the word the manga uses is 'kaigun'. )
