Haré+Guu aka Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu
I remember This coming out on fansubs back in the day, and Alot of people were always talking about this series. How does this compare to say the likes of Miami guns / excel saga / abenobashi.Because I really thought Miami guns was mediocre at its best but I didnt like the characters not one bit. And abenobashi seemed to over do it with the parodies and it became repetitive. And I dont want to buy something like that again tbh
It looks interesting but I wonder if its worth the buy.
Plz tell me more about it. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

You'll find much discussion of this topic in the latter part of this thread (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=1107966).

I will absolutely recommend this. It doesn't really fall into the genre of the three shows above. It's not a parody show, more of a comedy with a story and it's actually funny. The technical side and extras of the disk are perfect. I don't know what the show is like after the first disk, but based on what I've seen I'm preordering the rest of the series without reservation.

The incredibly hilarity of the show took me by suprise. The opening theme had me worried thta maybe it was more of a kids show but hell no! It's compared to Excel Saga, Abenobasi, FLCL, Puni Puni Poemi, not because it is a parody of other shows but because of the pure random wacky as shit "trait". There's a few examples I would use but I don't want to spoil it if you decide to pick it up. I will say that it has a slight "dark" humor about it because of Guu. <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> She does some very questionably mean things. Although you would never guess seeing her for the first time.</span>
I expected it to be average to good when I bought it but after only the first volume I'm convinced it's gonna be my #1 new favorite comedy of the year and might beat out the rest. The way Guu operates is just... well something I've never seen before.
To sum it up, if you like incredibly unpredictable craziness you'll LOVE this. It's not as fast-paced as Excel but a hell of alot happens in each episode to warrant shock and awe. I'm glad I bought the artbox too, I would have regretted not getting one for a show like this. There is repetition but it's intentional and usually contained within each episode to prove another point "the craziness of Guu" But in the first 4 eps I don't think anything was reused to much and I definitly do not see myself getting bored of any of it.
Infact certain crazy things that happen which you wanna learn more about seem to suddenly stop and then something else happens. It basically put several dozen questions of "what the fuck" and then left it off like that purely not to be repetetive. Atleast that is my opinion.

I just wanted to add a little. I got Miami Guns cheap recently and so I watched the first three episodes tonight. My earlier comment still stands. While the three show mentioned above all feel somewhat similar to me, I did not really get that same feeling of craziness just for the sake of craziness from Hare + Guu.

Yea there is a feeling when watching Hare+Guu that something is definitly going on and all this crazy shit isn't happening for nothing, if that's what you meant Chotto. I may end up liking this one better then the other 3 shows mentioned anyway.

It's hard to say much more about it without spoiling it. When I first watched it I hadn't even read the basic story plot, summary on the back of the dvd or anything. To start, Hare lives with his mother in the jungle and goes to a small jungle school. Then one day his drunk mother comes home with this mystery girl Guu who has no family. Hare falls in love instantly <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>when he wakes up the next morning Guu is no longer the glistening eye sweet heart he saw, but a child-brute with none of the social skills she had when she first met them. She's completely rude and what I mean by completely rude is she eats Hare while he's playing video games! </span> /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif That is the tip of the ice berg.
I guess I should say my enjoyment of the show is derived from the insanity of Guu, what she's gonna do next, and Hare's hopeless attempt to stop the chaos that she is.

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, that's exactly it. Guu isn't just a person trying to act as nutty as possible, she seems <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>almost alien with her "appetite"</span>. Also, I found her "laugh" hilarious.

That sounds about right and the fact that she is aware of it and riles Hare up on purpose.

Same here, her laugh was so annoyingly ridiculous..yet fits her personality perfectly it's probally the most an anime has gotten me to laugh in atleast a year.
And <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>alien is the first thing that came to mind seeing her eat elephants and have playlans in her stomache. </span>

While it has a great cast and some nice wackiness, I must warn some of you:
The humor is extremely mean-spirited and nasty. If you have a problem with laughing at other people's misfortunes, you might want to be wary of this.

IMO, while Guu does many sadistic things to Haré, there's a method to her madness, and looking a little deeper, I don't think she's simply on a mean-spirited romp for the viewer. Well, not entirely. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I don't laugh at others misfortunes (aka Love Hina) while I do like the Love Hina anime series, I find it annoying when Naru whoops the shit out of Keitaro instead of "comedic". I believe Hare+Guu has more to offer the comedy derived from others misfortunes, it's all about Guu's pyschie, the way she works, and Hare's reaction. Aside from those two it helps that all the other characters have alot to offer as well.

I kept looking to see if Guu had a <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>noble motive for the trials she puts Hare though but alas that never happened. (haven't seen the final series though - does that happen?) </span> I will admit that I (guiltily) laughed when <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Dama sexually abused Clive. I fell asleep after watching one episode. Nice to hear Naoko Watanabe (Miyu in Vampire Princess Miyu) but I'm not a fan of random wackiness.

Over the years, I've grown to hate most anime comedies. They're too predictable and fanservice oriented.
That said, Hale+Guu is the only comedy in recent memory I've thoroughly enjoyed. I like the characters, bit of mystery and the ending has heart. Very highly recommended.

I was bored by Hare + Guu, the two episodes I saw of it. Lots of pointless randomness, similar to Excel Saga (which I didn't like either). I wouldn't recommend it at all, personally. But if your tastes are different than mine, you might enjoy it. I know people who do.
Interestingly enough, I liked Abenobashi a lot. It was random, but it wasn't "pointless" randomness (about no topic in particular) - it was parody!

I finally received my volume 1 today. I even decided to "Go With Chest Hair!" /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
I wouldn't agree with how this show is sometimes described as "totally random." It's wacky, sure, but there's a certain logic to the wackiness. The show doesn't strike me as being about Guu anyway, really -- it's about <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Hare's relationship with his mother. This becomes more obvious in the second half of the series, as we learn more about her.</span> As for Guu herself, well, she seems to be kind of a Rorschach blot of a character, but I think she's there, ultimately, to accomplish the thing that happens at the end of the TV series. My opinion.
