Favorite Azumanga Daioh episodes?

Hello,

I'm programming the shows for The Brattle Anime Festival. I have a slot where I'm going to show 2 episodes of Azumanga Daioh. While it seems common sense to show the first two episodes, I feel they're not the funniest.

As an Osaka fanboy, I really love the 2nd ep. But maybe its comedy isn't broad enough for a general screening for the uninitiated.

The first Summer House visit #5 might be good for a varied look at the humour styles in this show - the slow derangement of Osaka, the Yukari-mobile and of course the yuri element of Kaori /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Definitely the second Cultural Festival episode #16 for the legendary penguin suit! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Since we're talking entire episodes rather than just the 4-minute blurbs, I'll second the vote for Episode 5, the Summer Holidays episode. Has one of my favorite scenes from the entire series, and all around you get a good feel for all the characters with plenty of humor throughout.

Actually, now that I really think about it, I second both of mrgazpacho's choices. While they may not be the "best" overall, they're easily accessible and have a lot of humour.

Number 18 is classic. There is only one thing that can sum up that whole episode: Snowball!

Number 21 was another good one but you need to show a Sakkaki episode (in particular when cats mess her up to understand the crucialness of it all.)

For the funniest comedy, 13- Mid-Term Test and 14-Summer Holidays would be what I'd show.

That's a good one. I'd also pick the first pool episode... I believe which was aptly titled "Pool! Pool! Pool!" All the characters get some good screen time, plus it's hilarious... and girls in swimsuits /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I definitely agree with the "Pengi-Chiyo" episode.

As for the second episode, I'd go with episode 12, the one that focuses on a day in the life of Chiyo-chan. Not only does that episode give you a good idea of what to expect humor-wise in Azumanga, but it also has plenty of Chiyo-chan kawaiiness (especially shots of of Chiyo-chan with her hair down and the cuteness that is Neko-Chiyo).

I love lots of moments in Azumanga, but I think the last trip to the summer house is my favorite. The "It's Flying" running gag from Osaka/Yukari cracks me up every time. I believe that's #22.

yes!!! i totally agree. i would also vote for the second sports fest episode, the one where kaorin has to team up with sakaki for the three-legged race :D i would also vote for the last summer vacation where kaorin gets to come along and experience the driving skillz of yukari-sensei.
