View Full Version : The Worst Macross Series?

You know, the other day I started to rewatch Macross 7 and I couldn't get past the 3rd episode. God that show is terrible. When I first saw it, I said, "Hey, this is pretty cool and different," but by episode 32 I said, "Man, when the hell is this show going to do something DIFFERENT?" The entire series was formulaic and felt like the same freaking episode 49 times. There were good scenes, but this show just plain out sucks. Even the Dynamite 7 OVA was terrible. The only good thing about this was the movie and the 3 encore episodes. Even Macross Zero was better.
So anyway, which is your least favorite Macross series?

I assume people would hit me if I said I liked Macross 7 more than SDF Macross?

I was tempted to say Macross 2 but at least that was entertaining later on, Macross 7 however was complete and utter shite, and is the worse show I have ever seen for repeating the same footage over and over, and not good looking footage either. Looks like they spent all the money on the opening and forgot they had to animate an entire series.

As long as you're not a fan of Uwe Boll films, I just chalk it up to difference of opinion. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I really enjoyed Macross 7. It is one of those shows you should try to watch in an approximation of its original weekly schedule. If you mainline more then 3-4 episodes at once you can get really annoyed at the reused animation.
Macross II I couldn't even finish, it was so bad.

The animation wasn't what annoyed me, it was the plots. The same thing happened about 30 times before they finally did something different, or before Basara finally got a new song.
"I hate fighting!! Ohhhhhhhhhh, but I'm going to jump into a valkyrie and sing to you so that you either get yourself blown up, or turn good just to shut me up!!"
Next episode, "I hate fighting!! Ohhhhhhhhhh, but I'm going to jump into a valkyrie and sing to you so that you either get yourself blown up, or turn good just to shut me up!!"
47 episodes later, "I hate fighting!! Ohhhhhhhhhh, but I'm going to jump into a valkyrie and sing to you so that you either get yourself blown up, or turn good just to shut me up!!"
I highly enjoyed Macross II. However, if it weren't for the Marduk and the emulators, I probably wouldn't have.

I admit I haven't seen 7 yet for obvious reasons. Zero had great dogfighting scenes but the story just sat there - I consider it more bland than bad. That leaves II. When Grizzled Old Reporter guy conveniently died so that Half Naked Chick could have a seat in the valkyrie, I got the feeling I was in for a bad show. The rest of the show confirmed my early suspicions, so it gets my vote.

when you said "rewatch" so I take it you've seen the whole show? Macross 7 is a tough show because its VERY VERY Slow to start. After ep 10 or 11 it begins to pick up. The story after that is pretty good, well I like it. Can I put southern Cross as part of "macross" haah its not actually but I HATE thatone the most. OF the ones listed... I guess I'll put macross zero. From ep 1-3 it was da shit ep 4 i'm like WHAT THE FUCK! The ending killed it for more. I'm also one of those RARE guys that likes MACROSS II but thats not "part" of the macross timeline to to speak.

It took me about 18 months to watch Macross 7 (R2's). It was about the most painful experience I've had in anime, but I felt I had to do it being a Macross fan first and foremost. I don't want to think about how much I spent on this, but other than some of the character designs and Max & Milia, it was simply junk. The music is so repetitive along with the combat scenes that it made my skin crawl at times. I also wanted to finish it so I could understand Macross Zero better, but I'm not sure that has worked out very well. I did like it a bit at first (I started on disc 4), but going back to 1 and restarting, made me realize just how plodding the show is. There's no reason it needed to be 49 episodes.
I think the encore episodes could have been worked into the show somewhere. One of them looked like it might have been interesting, but it washed out too. They could have done so many interesting things in 49 episodes with the "colony fleet" premise, especially with all the Zentran and Meltran that I presume would still be out there.
My next least favorite would be Macross II, but I would give that one a "B" I like the music from MII. M7 used MII music and plus music at times, which was refreshing. I have to admit that the 2nd ED song, "dakedo baby" from M7 was about the only thing I enjoyed by then, along with a few flashbacks...
I picked up a Macross 7: Trash manga for the cover, but "Trash" should have been the title for the anime series.

Yeah, I'll second that. Max and Milia were the only redeeming features of Macross 7 IMO. Mainly because I liked them in 'Do you remember love' (I must admit I haven't seen most of the original Macross series, so I don't know how they fare in it...). And yeah, there was no need to stretch it into so many episodes. At least in other long series' such as Naruto and Kenshin stuff actually happens throughout...
Macross II was vaguely enjoyable because I liked the music and some of the mech designs (especially some of the Marduk ones...) - there were however some bits in it which were equally as dire as Macross 7... For example the above comment on the convenient death of the war reporter.
I flat out loved Zero though - I thought it was awesome despite only having 5 episodes (The limited character development didn't bother me at all whilst I was watching those MENTAL fight scenes...).
Macross II, hands down.
I loved Macross Plus. I found it to be a great OVA, good music, good story. I can still put it on and enjoy it.
Macross Zero, while being uninteresting story wise, gets points for its visuals and cast.
By the way DeadlyMessiah, you still owe me 11 lunches /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I hope everyone knows that Macross II is not part of the timeline so you really can't "consider it" part of macross, it shares its name. Bash the show all you like but the music was great.

Yep, I watched the entire thing just after I bought all of Animeigo's Macross DVDs since I was in a Macross mood back in 2003.
Zero's first episode showed promise, but the series ended up just being eye candy for the mechs. The story was very convulted and the characters were unlikable.

Well, since you don't have ADV's McRoss in the list, I will have to vote Macross 7. They should've made Basara wear a tiara and a tutu to complete his uber-lameness.

7... too much j-pop not enough everything else (Story, character development, animation). Macross II was at least enjoyable in that candy kind of way. And it was short.

I would say the least one i liked was Macross Plus but it's still ok though. In order would be:Macross, Macross II, Macross 7, Macross Zero, and Macross Plus.

LOL. I'd have to agree with DeadlyMessian on the Basara plot. There were ofcourse other plots running in the show. To be honest, I probably could have given the series a higher grade if Basara looked better, sang better, and was a whole lot less annoying. The mech designs could've been less cartoony too. Too bad it ends up as my least favorite Macross series.
I'm in the minority of those who liked Macross II. The only thing wrong about Macross II was the ending. You just don't wipe out the SDF-1 just like that. A bit more nod of the head to the original series or DYRL could've helped. The mech/chara designs and music in Macross II were fantastic. Animation quality was top-notch.

I haven't had the chance to watch Mac7 yet so I voted for MacII even though I actually enjoyed it...in japanese. Years prior I had rented the dub on vhs and found it just unwatchable. I left the room and my brother sat through the whole thing and hated it. I found the dvd cheap years later and decided to give it another try this time subbed and enjoyed it. My brother still refuses to waste any more of his life on it after the terrible dub even though I've though I've told him it was pretty good. I think it's one of the worst dubs EVER!

let's see....
Macross Zero... nice but artificial looking visuals, incomprehensible story by the time it's over...
Macross 7... dull, uninteresting characters, making me not care who wins in the action sequences, (oh and dont give me that 'You need to watch 12 episodes before it gets good' theory. If I have to waste four hours of my life before I'm able to POSSIBLY enjoy something, that's a waste of fraggin time. I could be watching something I actually do enjoy in the meantime.) Wound up liking the Dynamite opening song though. And at the end of the series, Max jumps into a valkyrie and fights. Definite points builder here.
Macross II: Characters more dull, stupid and uninteresting than Macross 7, cheap animation tactics for its time, crappy action sequences, the Macross casually destroyed and turned into a Headmaster Transformer, and last but not least, disavowed by the producers of Macross as a 'parallel story' in the short piece "Macross: A Furure Chronicle". Even the two nice vocals in the show can't keep the other factors from dropping this series to the absolute bottom of the barrell.
Winner (or loser in this case): Macross II: Lovers Again. A crappy OAV series with the Macross name surgically attached.

The first series was far and away the worst one. And Macross Plus was the best, for the record.

I don't know about this thread. Zero was pretty damn bad. It's like they dropped a crapload of money on the animation, but paid whoever wrote the script in food stamps, cause it sure sucked. There's just no sensible reason for skewage like that. Go all the way, or milk something being completely lazy about the whole project. A lack of balance is just disturbing.

Since DYRL and Dynamite 7 don't count for some reason, I'd have to pick Macross Zero. It looks absolutely beautiful, had potential... went nowhere, utterly fell to pieces in the last episode.
I also think Macross 7 is as good as, if not better than the original. It's simply a different kind of beast, and I appreciate it for what it is, not for what it isn't in comparison.
