That's awesome you love Gokudo and Ruin Explorers. You want Slayers though. Trust me, I LOVE the medieval setting comedy shows and Slayers has a little of both. Have you seen Rune Soldier yet? It's also pretty good. And it's in a very cheap thinpak for $24.
As for Sorcerer Hunters, I've only seen the 1st episode. I own all of it but my backlog is just too big. I'm not one who pays much attention to small details but I'd say the animation is older, but it doesn't bother me one bit. I can't say much for the overall enjoyment or replay value other then I've fallen asleep at episode 2 about 3 times in a row. But it doesn't help I save it for last when I'm dead tired either. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
So if you haven't seen Slayers or Rune Soldier yet, I highly recommend you check those out first. Slayers definitly first, it's like 78 episodes of the TV and several OVA and movies. Really one of my first animes and I can still watch it and get as much enjoyment as I did the first time. Overall best replay value for this genre IMO.

Well, I haven't seen Ruin Explorers or Gokudo, however Sorceror Hunters is damn funny. Plenty of likeable characters - and characters you love to hate. The concept of replay value is limited with me - too much backlog of unwatched, to even consider re-watching.
Animation quality was quite good.
For the $28 you'd pay at Righstuf, definitely worth it.

yeah i've seen rune soldier which is also pretty good. i am waiting for funimation to re-release slayers so i will most definitely get it when that happens. man it's not a good sign that you fell asleep midway. perhaps it was not interesting enough to make you want to see more? but i wanna hear from more people. please comment on the replay value of Sorcerer Hunters. thanks very much.

Okay animation, fun characters (if a bit one-note at times), but little replay value. The first couple episodes introduce the basic premise, but then it meanders and does lots of filler for a while. The main plot gets going about halfway through, and it picks up and resolves nicely, but at the same time it didn't leave me much interested in seeing it again for a while. It's been a couple years since I first watched the show all the way through, and I'm only just now seeing it again (for the dub).

I thought that it started out being a lot of fun, but it slowly got annoying to the point where I just didn't like it anymore, and I'm still not sure why. I still haven't finished watching the 4th volume. I wouldn't recommend it.

IMHO, Sorcerer Hunters wears out what little "replay value" it may have had by recyling the same jokes and plots over and over again. By time you reach the end of the series, you'll feel like you've already re-watched it a half dozen times.

I second Balthiers reccomendations of Slayers and Rune Soldier both are quite good and Rune Soldiers pretty cheap now.

Well since you've already seen Rune Soldier, and you want to wait on FUNI's release of Slayers (although I think its too good of a show to be waiting) you could try:
Those Who Hunt Elves while it's not nearly as good as either of those IMO it has some interesting ideas and comedy (about stripping elves nude! and they is female priestess usually /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif ) but I found it got repetetive later on. However some if not more might disagree and say that it's an amazing show overall. I'm just strict about my medieval comedies cuz Slayers and Gokudo made me have such high standards /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Overall it is worth the $24 thinpak it's in now like 24-26 episodes I forget. It "may" bide about 1/10 of your time waiting for the Slayers rerelease.

animation quality?
Standard TV fair. They waited til the final episodes to put out some gorgeous-looking animation.
likeable characters?
A likeable group of Sorcerer Hunters, but they all have their weird hobbies too.
replay value?
Not a whole lot. Maybe just the actual "story" episodes.

I only saw the last eight episodes and it didn't do much for me. The humor was pretty one-hat and the animation was rather plain and uninteresting. As far as I could tell, the two male leads besides Carrot weren't really needed, either.
The four-part finale was well done, though.

I've only gotten through the first disk and one of the OVAs so far. As far as the series goes based on the first five episodes, the opening video is really nifty and uses lots of interesting techniques, but the show itself is fairly average so far. I don't recommend watching this in parallel with City Hunter; the main guy's just as big a pervert as Ryo is, so you could suffer burn-out of that personality type if you try going through both at once.
Now the Sorceror on the Rocks OVA that takes place in the same universe is great stuff. It follows different characters, but they're very interesting. Actually, I saw SotR first and bought SH TV because of it. I initially got SotR as something to padd shipping on another DVD since it sounded kind of interesting. Deffinetly worth the few bucks I shelled out for it. If you can find it, it's probably cheap. Very worth it.
Hey, about the other OVA that uses the SH characters, anyone know if I should try snagging it up before it's impossible to find or is it skipable if one finds the TV show average or what?

The Sorcerer Hunters OVA is okay, but not much better than the TV show. It presents itself as being closer to the manga, but is largely just an excuse to gather all the characters together again for an adventure, a comedy, and a light romantic piece. While animation quality is improved, the stories themselves are fluffy and extraneous, and one is downright annoying in my book. Get this if you're a die-hard fan of the show or the manga, otherwise you can skip it with no problem.

You're joking right? Sorcerer Hunters doesn't even compare to City Hunter. Carrot doesn't even come close to Ryo Saeba. City Hunter is 100x more entertaining than Sorcerer Hunters.

I know, but trying to watch both at once caused a bit of burn out for me because the main characters have such similar personalities. City Hunter's deffinetly better though. I'll get back to them later though. (Just not at the same time /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif.)

I bought the Essential Anime releases of the series. I enjoyed it after the first one, but as has already been said the same concepts keep getting re-used, taking the fun out of later episodes. The show's resolution was decent enough, but overall I don't have much desire to watch it again. It's definitely a step below Rune Soldier.
I actually enjoyed the OVA more than the television series, the humor seemed to hit the mark for me more. But the OVA doesn't work well without having seen the TV series, so...

Ahhh, yes. Sorcerer Hunters. Where else can a fanboy (or fangirl) have their BDSM fanatsies fulfilled?
I would suggest that if you want to get SH, get the box set for whatever insanely cheap price Best Buy or your local video outlet has it on sale for. Also, look for the OAV which is funnier than..well..funny! (heh) And it's pretty cheap as well. I've seen it for 11.99 or less, depending on where you go.
If you want to compare it to Gokudo and Ruin Explorers, I'm not sure there is a comparison. Technically, Gokudo is a paraody of Slayers, just not as long. And Ruin Explorers could be called a parody of Gokudo and Slayers and any other treasure hunting, magic wielding anime.
That being said, rewatchability, at least for me and SO has been high. The manga is good to, with some stories you won't find (at least from what I can recall at the moment)in the anime.
I also endorse the recommendations of Slayers. This can be got cheaply at Rightstuf. Or anywhere else, priced between $35 and 45 per box set. Definitely look around for if you're not too picky about price.
SO and I picked up Rune Soldier on a whim as we were suffering from 'we need something new and cheap' syndrome. I have to say, for $30, it was well worth it.
So really, you've got some great recommendations for series. Have at it! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I would have to suggest Cool Devices. (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/221.php) myself. It seems about 2/3'rds of all Hentai out there is BDSM related though. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
Anyhoo, personally I found Sorcerer Hunters to be fairly amusing, but certainly not an A title. To me its a one trick pony show that never really goes anywhere. Yes, there is a basic plot, but it really didnt need 24 episodes to get there. Most episodes follow a basic plotline. Carrot runs around and trys to slobber all over every girl he finds. The girls walk over and smack him. Eventually Carrot finds a girl who wants something from him. The girls come along and smack him. Of course the girl is only using Carrot for some reason, either selfish or evil. The girls come along and smack him. Carrot changes form to finish off evildoers. The girls come along and smack him. All is well. Rinse and repeat.
It isnt that Sorcerer Hunters didnt have a lot of replay value for me I suppose. Its just that it seemed like every episode was a replay. Hence, by the end it felt like I had seen the series a couple of dozen times already. Still, it is cheap, and did provide a fair amount of fun. I'd have to suggest Rune Soldier, Slayers, or Orphen ahead of Sorcerer Hunters though.

How much did the OVA run you? I've been looking for it on the cheap.
