View Full Version : Anime that's on Laser disc but not DVD?

I Figured since I'm going nuts on an HDTV and High End DVD Player I thought I'd be even more hardcore and trackdown a Laserdisc player while I was at it. But I'm not sure if there's anything on Laserdisc that isn't on DVD.
Anybody know (and also if the anime on Laserdisc only is worthwhile)

I can't name anything in particular, but if it helps, my mate had a substantial laserdisc collection (much of which was anime...) and he managed to replace EVERYTHING on DVD when the time came.

Most well known is the original Mobile Suit Gundam TV series. Japanese, not US release. There will be other more obscure Japanese series on LD, like Utso no Miko, but not R2.
AFAIK for US releases, only Wannabes & Dog Soldier (both CPM) have not made it to DVD.
There are more US VHS releases of anime than LD not over to DVD yet.

I remember 'Five Star Stories' used to cost around $700 to own on LD but to the disapointment of the collectors (lol) was finally given a dvd release.
I know 'Blazing Transfer Student' remains an LD only title. 'Prefectural Earth Defense Force' was until it got announced by ADV for a US release yet still hasn't got a domestic release in Japan.
I know the list is huge for titles released on VHS in the US but never released on Dvd.

Hyperdoll: This series was released on DVD all chopped up with the endings gone and the live action segments deleted. If you want to see cute Japanese girls covering a Pink Lady song while a giant monster is fought off by a couple of hot girls, this is the show for you!
Maris the Chojo: I am not sure if the rest of "Rumic World" was released to LD but I had this title, which sadly met an end in being broken (don't ask) and thus someday I will have to replace it. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
But really, a LD player is good to have more for obscure Japanese stuff or the big guns like MSG TV.

Oh, there's a few more than that.
- Rumik World OAV's (Maris the Chojo, Laughing Target, Fire Tripper, Mermaid Forest) (Sub, 4 discs, USMC/Image)
- Blue Sonnet (Sub, 2 discs, USMC/Image)
- Ultimate Teacher (Sub, USMC/Image)
- Roots Search (Sub, USMC/Image)
- Scramble Wars/Ten Little Gall Force (Sub, AnimEigo)
- Twilight of the Cockroaches (Bilingual w/ no subtitles, Streamline/Lumivision)
- Robot Carnival (Bilingual w/ no subtitles, Streamline/Lumivision)
There might be a few others I haven't seen, particularly early subtitled CPM releases. An R2 of Robot Carnival does exist.
Of course, there are TONS of Japanese releases that have never gotten DVD treatment.
Rumik World, Blue Sonnet and Robot Carnival are must-sees. I also love Ultimate Teacher, but a lot of people don't.

Besides ebay where could I get these?
Also What would be a good player to trackdown (peferably one with S-Video Out)

Yahoo possibly.
Any Pioneer Elite or 900+ is a good player.
Animejungle is a good English language site.
http://www.shop-yamada.com/ has a good selection of LD box sets, including MSG & other Tomino series. They are expensive though, shipping can cost as much as the discs so be warned! /images/graemlins/cool.gif

At least Angel's Egg, Arion, Area 88, Dancougar, Galaxy Express 999, GodMars, Leda, and Space Adventure Cobra were all released on DVD in Japan even though they have not seen R1s.

Except for the first which was released on VHS by Streamline, and virtually hard to find ... Silent Mobius Movies 1 & 2 are both still only on LD format (as far as I know). And if I had a laser disc player (or know where to get one cheap), that's the only anime I would buy overseas. I'm still shocked it was never transfered to DVD format (and I'm not talking bootlegs from the tapes or fansubs either - I can do that myself).

It is amazing that the Mobius movies have stayed off DVD. Perhaps SM TV was not popular enough in Japan, though more obscure titles have had DVD releases.

Did Streamline release these two movies to LD or just to VHS? I have the Japanese LD's but haven't seen any 'US' versions.

I believe it was just VHS, but the US VHS release is also quite rare...the only way I actually got a copy of the movies was finding the R2VHS at Book-Off NYC by luck.

Added Explorer Woman Ray to my collection. It was a 1993 USMC title only released through Image (like Iria was initially). Ray Kizuki, the main character, is voice acted by Mika Doi, better known for Misa Hayase in Macross.
Subtitled only, but /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif it has an "English Rewrite" credit (by a Jay Parks) on the sleeve.

While the OVA adaption of Minami Ozaki´s (http://www.kreuz-net.com/) Bronze ~ Zetsuai since 1989 has been released on DVD in Japan, it´s sad that the Madhouse adaption of the original Zetsuai as well as Cathexis ~ Kôji Nanjô only have been released on LD up to now. I haven´t seen the Zetsuai OVA yet (but then again it´s the part of the manga that actually is still a tastefull romance which I wouldn´t say about Bronze) however I bought the jp LD for Cathexis a while ago and love it to bits. Great music, decent art and animation (each clip done by a different director including Rintaro and Yoshiaki Kawajiri). I´d definitely double-dip for this if it would be released on DVD in Japan.

Add 'Call Me Tonight' to the list. Released on VHS and LD only.
I just watched a fansub of this show, made in 1986, it's one of the most unique, insane and original anime i've ever seen. Highly recommended to all.

The R2 of Robot Carnival is nice, although dubtitled.
I'd love to see Blue Sonnet on DVD so I can put it next to my manga collection. Looking over it, it still holds up well, but the ending gives a bittersweet taste since the story goes on for way longer than what was animated.
And count me as a big fan of Ultimate Teacher. This, Hanappe Bazooka, and Chibi Go Nagai World are guilty pleasures I'd love to see on DVD.

Are we talking about US or Japanese releases? Because there's quite a few on this list that never had US LD releases, or even VHS. There's so many Japanese LD's that were never released on DVD that they're probably too numerous to mention.
I was unaware of some of the Right Stuf titles you have listed here. I seem to remember a Legend of the Forest domestic LD, but nothing else. Are you sure there were LD's of Godmars and Ai City?

Yeah, i've gone off topic. I was combining this thread with the other vhs thread of old titles that never got released. I was covering stuff that hasn't made it onto dvd in Japan or the US.
P.S. Your right, AI City has only ever made it onto vhs

Another one to add: Toward the Terra. A personal fave of mine, even if the story is rather disjointed. I'd love to replace my old US LD with the DVD.

TheCapt1701: I have a couple of questions. Didn't Area 88 just get a full DVD release finally? Maybe I am gettting it confused with something else. I'm also almost positive I saw Goku: Midnight Eye for sale on DVD once. Though I could easily be wrong on that one, that is my recollection at least. Also, is Hyperdoll the one about "Mew & Mica, the easy fighters"? Because I have that on DVD for sure, in all it's crappy glory. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
