View Full Version : Anime VHS you are proud to own (if you do)

What VHS do you still have in your collection? What are the ones you are proud of? I personally haven't sold any of mine, so basically this is about 150, but here are my favorites
- Gunbuster US Renditions - 3 volumes
- Maison Ikkoku Vols. 1-12 (bought these all brand new like 5 years ago except for volume 1, good memories there)
- Kimagure Orange Road OAV 1,2 - Hardshell old school cases
- Bubblegum Crisis OAV - Clamshell cases
- Wannabe's (OOP CPM OAV, nice acronyms)
- Rumik World Laughing Target + Maris of Chojo + Mermaid Forest
- Orge Slayer
- Super Bestial Machine God Dancougar
- Mermaid Scar
- Devil Hunter Yohko clam shell releases
- Cat Girl Nuku Nuku clam shell releases
- two Windaria releases
There are probably more, but I don't have any VHS here at my apartment right now. These are the shows though, that make me look back and remember the "good ol' days".

There's no way I could bare to throw out things I spent hundreds of dollars on, so I still have all of my VHS tapes. Everything listed is subbed except for Rose of Versailles which is only in Japanese.
- Escaflowne boxset (I should really replace this with the new cheap set)
- CLAMP Campus Detectives (not on DVD, and Bandai no longer has the license. Boo. Bought the R2 box, though.)
- Shoujo Kakumei Utena students' council boxset (came with stickers! I have since replaced this with the Rose Collection DVD boxset)
- Sailormoon R, S, and SuperS movies (replaced with R2 movie boxset)
- last two Evangelion tapes (I'll eventually get the thinpack)
- Rose of Versailles Japanese boxset (I'll probably buy the new DVD singles before I leave Japan)
- FAKE (I like FAKE, but I can't bring myself to buy the DVD)

The Supergal (a.k.a. Maris the Chojo, once DC got on Viz's case claiming to have a copyright on the word "super." /images/graemlins/icon_rolleyes.gif ) But it isn't so much that I'm proud of having it, I'm just really glad I do. I'd buy it on DVD in an instant if I could. Classic old school space adventure comedy. Add in the blooper reel(!) that runs for the credits, and it's utterly priceless. I pity those of you who haven't seen it! Pity! Pity! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
Also, I've got the old dub of the Dirty Pair movie, which I am inexplicably (given my usual unjust dismissal of dubs) fond of.

Hmm... most of my VHS tapes are rotting in a box in storage somewhere. I especially hate the ones that came in the cardboard sleeves... for example, I still have all of my EVA tapes, but the sleeves are all messed up. The ones I still keep around are mostly in clamshells:
Ranma 1/2 Season 1 subbed and OAVs: loved the clamshell packaging and the liner notes
Pioneer's releases of Hakkenden and El Hazard OAV: ditto
A lot of the old AnimeVillage stuff: Escaflowne box, MSG movie box, 0080/83 box, etc.
US Renditions releases of Gunbuster and Dangaio
Man, all my VHS tapes cost me an arm and a leg, mostly from Books Nippon in downtown LA, and I just can't bear selling them for pennies on the dollar, even if I've bought replacement DVDs for most of them.

Vampire Hunter D (Japanese)
Bubble Gum Crisis 1-2 (Japanese)

Phoenix 2772
Vengeance of the Space Pirate
Macross DYRL English dub
Crusher Joe: Ultimate Weapon ASH (Japanese)

I got rid of most of my VHS tapes a while back, but hung onto titles several titles that aren't (and probably never will be) available on DVD, like:
- Blue Sonnet
- Eat-Man (first season)
- Explorer Woman Ray
- Girl From Phantasia
- Megami Paradise
- Robot Carnival
- Tattoon Master
And some titles like Master Of Mosquiton and Burn-Up which have since been issued on DVD. I also have some beautifully done fansubs of all the Ghibli films prior to Princess Mononoke, when Disney picked up the licenses. It may the only way I'll ever get to see Only Yesterday and I Can Hear The Ocean...
I just wish I had hung onto my copy of the Silent Mobius movie... /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

I have very little anime on VHS & what I do have I bought since thay weren't available on DVD at the time that I bought them (But I like 'em all the same).
Here's what I have:
Astro Boy (1980) Vol. 1
Arcadia Of My Youth (Sub)
Galaxy Express 999 (Sub)
Adieu Galaxy Express 999 (Sub)
Sol Bianca

Yeah I got Explorer Woman Ray. That was pretty sweet. After spending like $26.20 per Maison Ikkoku volume after taxes, I would rather keep them for sentimental value rather than get $1 a piece if I'm lucky.

Back when DVD was just starting to take over VHS in popularity (circa 1999), I traded off most of my VHS for store credit at a local anime specialty store. Got a great deal -- great for me, anyway, since VHS went rapidly downhill not long after /images/graemlins/happy.gif. The only tapes I've kept are:
-- Oh My Goddess from Animeigo (5 tape set). Sentimental reasons.
-- A bunch of fansubs. Because the particular shows still aren't US Licensed!

I have Sol Bianca, Gunbuster 1-3, Laughing Target, Fire Tripper, Kabuto and Lost Universe Vol. 5. I've no recollection of how I ended up with that last one, but there it is, sitting on my shelf. /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif I like gunbuster and the two Rumic World tapes the best, I was happy to find them. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I still have a few around, most DBZ ones though. However, these are still emotinal treasures to me:

I got some OLD VHS's of the Force Five series Star Vengers and Gaiking called Robo Formers. The thing is the tapes are EXTREMELY poor quality picture-wise. But the rarity of the shows themselves has some value to me.
Also have some of the old Lupin the Wolf VHS releases. I forget the company name, but they are long since out of business.
Battle Angel Alita dub.
That's about it. Most of my VHS collection was donated to others as I upgraded to DVD.

I've still got "Slayers: The Motion Picture" and "Slayers: Explosion Array - When Opposites Attack!" aka "Slayers Special: Mirror, Mirror". I suppose I'm proud of them, considering I haven't switched them for DVD's yet. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif I like them because they have this real 'old school' feel to them.

I'm not even sure if I have this anymore, but the only anime VHS I've ever bought was Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Vol. 3. Everything else is on DVD (but I still haven't gotten the DVD of 08MST Vol. 3).
Oh, and I don't actually own these (nor are they legit tapes), but I occasionally borrow my friend's tapes of the Adult Swim version of Gundam 0083 just so I can look for edits (I have the DVD version, so I can really point stuff out). /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

The only one I have bought (or actually bidded for and won over at the Y!AJ) is the jp VHS release of Saint-Elmo ~ Hikari no Raihôsha (http://www.leijiverse.com/en/seriespage.php?series=034) and I wouldn´t want to miss it (was in excellent condition and is such a decent movie).
The only other jp VHS release I´d love to get my hands on (because it´s not available on LD nor DVD in Japan -.-) is the infamous Arei no Kagami - Way to the Virgin Space (http://www.leijiverse.com/en/seriespage.php?series=033) (actually I did win a copy but well the person that sold it didn´t want to ship overseas even by using a bidding agent *but that´s a different story*)

I have Cardcaptors on VHS.. I'm not proud of it but it was the only way to support CCS in the UK. I also have the US Digimon movie on VHS as it came with a miniCD that wasn't included with the DVD.
I do have the one Ulysses 31 VHS that I got from eBay before the DVDs were released.
I also have Sol Bianca.. it's not on VHS but it might as well be if you ignore the text extras.

I can't exactly say I'm proud of owning any VHS because it just doesn't look right on the same shelf as my massive DVD collection. So I hide them in the closet /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif Now, if FF Legend of the Crystals was never released on DVD and it's OOP, then I do value it more and wouldn't think of getting rid of it.

For me it's roughly about half of the Dragonball Z releases (excluding the movies), Dragonball: Tournament saga vol. 1 & 2, and Night Warriors: Darkstalker's Revenge Morrigan box set. I have Urusei Yatsura volumes 16 - 20, which have the better colour balance than AE's DVDs. However the tradeoff in general video quality between tape & disc makes the latter preferable overall.
More AE I've found is "Rupan III" Gold of Babylon & Fuma Conspiracy, neither of which got a DVD release.
For some reason I still watch my Streamline dub tapes of 3 x 3 Eyes & trio of Dirty Pair volumes; Nolandia,005 & Eden.

For me it's Macross : 'Do you remember love?' - which I think is a nice adaptation from the series. It was THE first anime film I ever saw (when I was about 9 and living in Hong Kong, it was on TV one night...) - I picked it up on VHS and have had to take care of it, as (if my information is correct - someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong...) it doesn't look like it will be getting a reasonable release on DVD any time soon. Which sucks basically.

The anime I have on VHS is:
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Fist of the North Star
Roujin Z
The End of Evangelion
Evanglion: Death and Rebirth
Devilman
3x3 Eyes vols 1-3
Neon Genesis Evangelion volume 7
I'm proud of Roujin Z as it cost me £1 a few years back and Fist of the North Star as IIRC it still hasn't got a DVD release.
I look back at them fondly because they were mostly the first anime I ever owned (Akira being the first) and would definitely never get rid of them.

Maybe because of this thread, I've decided to donate most of my VHS collection to Goodwill for the meager ~$3 a tape I can get as a tax write off. I loved the tapes, I spent a fortune to get them, and I'll keep the inserts, but I just can't justify keeping stuff I already have on DVD. Buy Hakkenden... I really liked your covers, too. Gunbuster: Definitely the biggie for me, especially because there's a bit of a story behind the first two volumes. I'd rented GB from Blockbuster and when I got to the store to return them, I realized I'd left them on the roof of the car as I pulled out of my driveway. One of the tapes only had mild damage from falling off the roof, but the other one had fallen in the middle of the road, and was smashed all to heck. Since I was paying to replace the tapes anyway, I asked to keep the damaged ones. It turned out that the tape inside the case was just fine, and I was able to salvage the series for my own collection. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
KOR OVA Vol. 1: The first non-Robotech tape I ever bought. I knew nothing about the series, but it was the only anime the comic store had in stock at the time. I was in awe of the liner notes...
Oh, and I can't quite bring myself to give up the Palladium tapes of Robotech:New Generation I bought for something ungodly like $45 apiece back in the day. It was such a huge investment for me at the time, it feels like giving up a kidney or something...

I'm kind of glad that I didn't go through the VHS era of anime. VHS tapes take up too much space, they are twice the width of a DVD and with a clamshell case are nearly three times the width and taller than a DVD.

It probably won't happen. Urban Vision's rights to this series have expired and their contract never included the right to release it on DVD. *sigh* /images/graemlins/depresse.gif /images/graemlins/sad.gif

I wonder if this is something Media Blasters would possibly be interested in...

You know, I've been thinking the same thing!

What I still have on VHS that has not been given to my niece yet:
Domestic Release:
Escaflowne
Saber Marionette J
FanSubs:
Sorcerer Hunters
Tenchi Muyo (TV and OAVs)
Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Dirty Pair TV
Samurai X/Kenshin (missing Vol.1)
Hana Yori Dango
Card Captor Sakura (including the movies)
Kodocha
Fushigi Yugi (including OAVs)
With the exception of Dirty Pair, Kenshin and Hana Yori Dango, everything has been bought on DVD when it came out, and those that will be released on DVD soonly.
All the fansubs were given to me when the series started appearing on dvd. I plan on passing on the anime onto my niece. She litereally took over my laptop the last time I visited with the first 4 volumes of FMA.

I would have to say Hyperdoll, depite also owning the Laserdiscs. Every other anime release has long been replaced on DVD or LD.

Battle Angel: After hearing about the DVD going out of print, I quickly bought the tape from RightStuf. Damned proud to have this. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
KOR TV/OAV/Movie: I started to buy the OAVs first. Then bought the movie, and the TV series last. Yes, very weird order. Don't ask. /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif

There might be some freebies buried over in the basement of my parents' house, but the only VHS tapes that I would say I'm proud to own (and which reside in my apt) are the two CCS special tapes. Of course, since the videos were included in the extras on the R2 DVD re-release, they're not quite as special as they used to be, but I still like seeing them on my shelf. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I still buy VHS, especially since moving to Japan; it's easy math: DVDs cost a fortune, but I can get tapes (which were often originally priced in the $100 range) for usually $1-$5 each at a variety of secondhand places. Plus there's lots of OVAs that have never been released on DVD anyway, and it's always fun to find something cool I've never heard of.
What comes to mind:
-2001 Nights OVA
-Utsunomiko movie and OVAs
-Glass Mask OVA 1
-Hana no Asuka-gumi OVAs
-Kyou Kara Ore Wa!! vols 1-5
-High Speed Jecy vols 1-2
-California Crisis OVA
-a random volume of Yawara! TV
-THE GEKIGANGER OVA!!!
-Darkness of the Sea, Shadow of the Moon OVA 1 (and I wanna see the rest!)
-the old US dub of Phoenix 2772 movie

I guess the tapes I'm most sentimental over are those that were or still are hard to come by, or got me hooked on a series.
The UK (MVM) KOR OVA & movie 1 release, Oh My Goddess & Bubblegum Crisis. Viz Maison Ikkoku. Kiseki Gunbuster. ADV Tekken, Evangelion, KOR 2nd movie, City Hunter season 1, ODP OVAs. Manga UK Mermaid Forest, Laughing Target, Firetripper, Dominion & Wind of Amnesia. Animeigo KOR TV. Pioneer Battle Athletes OVAs. CPM Agent Aika.
I keep all tapes because they are good for lending, & like LDs, from a techno-nostalgia POV - represent anime that can be watched on most players - no coding, no software hassle & they are even repairable!

Whats 'California Crisis' and '2001 Nights' like?
Are they classics? I'd love to see a few screen caps.
It's defintly nice discovering old gems.

Both have been largely forgotten, so I wouldn't call them classics, but that said, "2001 Nights" is exactly like a couple issues of the "2001 Nights" manga that Viz released many years ago-- a grand-tradition SF story about mankinds colonization of space.
"California Crisis" is a fun, if disposable one-shot OVA about a guy and a girl chasing UFOs in California while dodging the military. It's most notable for a very unique color palette. I looked around the Web, but sorry; I couldn't find any pictures of either.

Yeah, that Patlabor 1 tape (my very first "blind buy") will always have a special place in my heart. If it had been "Genocyber", my life might have been very different. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
And there was also that smell when you first opened a new VHS tape...ah the memories...
