View Full Version : Secondary romantic relationships in harem anime

While most harem anime feature one main character with almost everyone in love with him/her, some of these harem anime also manage to incorporate some secondary romantic relationships amongst the supporting cast. Which one is your favorite? Oh...besides straight pairings, you may include yaoi/yuri pairings and they don't have to be completely canon, they can be semi-canon (even if one side shows interest and they other side is a little unclear).

Ranma 1/2 Shampoo and Mousse. I really don't care if they actually get together, but all the crazy ideas these two use to try to get who they love are really funny.

Nadesico Spoilers if you didn't read the Nadesico novel summary from a few months ago. Jun Aoi and Yukina Shiratori . It's nice he finally gets somebody, but the pairing almost completely out of the blue I want to know how it happened.

Saber Marionette J - Tiger and Faust. There's something about her self-destructive, hyper-violent do-anything-for-the-sake-of-her-love attitude that I find touching. Most android-human pairings just don't measure up.

I wish I could say I liked Tsubaki and Kousei's romance from Please! Twins, but he was such a jerk to her and she was one of my anime-crushes, it was unbareable to watch.

Akane's relationship with her boyfriend at the cafe in Mai-HiME was really touching but we all know that was just a set-up to demonstrate what was at stake for the HiMEs as far as risking your most-important person. It did make for incredible drama though, I cried, I'll admit it /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Hmmm, guess I couldn't think up any other serious romances, unless you want to count Toru Watanabe and Princess Hyatt from Excel Saga, but I doubt you do.

It's the whole "relationships in harem anime" that's holding me back. I really can't think of any harem anime that had a significant enough secondary romance to be memorable. Other types of series though I can think of a few.

Yeah, I noticed that after I already posted. The only one I could think of was the love triangles in Mahou Sensei Negima... of course, with 31 girls, it was bound to happen.

Ugh...31 girls? Was this show sponsored by Baskin Robbins? Now I'm afraid to watch it.

You should be afraid, its crap.

The manga's great though.

And its not really a "Harem Romance" in the standard sense. Its more of an action/comedy manga.

Hotohori in Fushigi Yuugi met a girl at the end of the show and got married . And in the same show, Yui in the same show fell in love with Miaka's big brother's best friend if I remember correctly.

I count Fushigi Yuugi as a (reversed) harem anime in any case. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Apparently everyone seems to see the need to up the ante on the number of moe girls in a harem series. As if Sister Princess and Angel Tales weren't bad enough. That entire genre has fallen apart...if it was ever intact to begin with.

I think that's pretty natural, honestly.

Harem shows, more than almost any other genre, are just pure wish fufillment. Having well rounded female characters instead of moe caricatures would take away from that. Real girls are complicated, bewildering and obnoxious at times. Moe characters aren't.

That is why tenchi is the ultimate harem show! Can't get any better than Ryouko and Aeka . /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif I think Tenchi was the show that started the popularity of harem shows, though some people might think Ranma and Urusei Yatsura did it.

Now that you've mentioned Negima, one secondary relationship that I really liked in that show was Konoka x Setsuna.

Another one was Yashima x Konoe (Hanaukyo Maid Tai La Verite) .
