View Full Version : Support Type Anime Characters

Many characters participate in battles. While their powers and abilities may vary. From enhanced strength to being able to shoot beams of energy out of their hands. Often times it boils down to various ways of damaging your enemy. Ie attack types.

However some anime characters are of the support type. They create forcefields to protect other members, they make allies stronger, they make enemies weaker, they heal injuries, and etc. Granted they may not be blowing up mountains, but they help to make sure others can. Assuming those said others aren't the type that go "I was only pretending to be injured".

This topic is dedicated to the idea of such characters. Simply because well attack type characters are a dime a dozen. Not that I automatically hate attack type characters, but ah you know what I mean. Granted several characters can be considered support type. You could say the dude that repairs the giant super robot is a support type if you wanted to.

Now the character that inspired this topic was Shining Luminous of Pretty Cure. Now granted as an actual attack type magical girl, she flat out well sucks. She's never going to win a one on one battle if you ask me. However that doesn't matter because in reality she's a support type magical girl. For example one of her abilities involves powering up Pretty Cure for a super attack. She can also temporarily stop the movement of an enemy.

Another character that comes to mind is Suzu of Rakugo Tennyo Oyui. While she hasn't directly attacked anyone yet, she has created barriers to protect others. Thus I consider her a support type character. Or well to be exact a cute support type magical girl. Err well either way she definitely fits the bill for me.

All right then only two character so far, but it's a start. I'm sure people can think of more. Just remember I'm looking for support type characters or at least characters who have support type abilities. The primary purpose of a support character is not to win a battle, but to help someone else win. Or whatever...

My personal favorites would have to be:

Raquel from Scrapped Princess. Not only did she save many peoples lives on several occasions, but she kicked a few asses along the way. And she's hot.

The Principal from Shingu, Secret of the Stellar Wars (or Muryou, if you want to be true to the original title). For an old guy, he was a nimble sumbitch. On that note, toss in Setsuna and the old guy she was with (I forget his name) when they attacked the aliens with a baseball bat and ball. The old guy caught a punch that would have knocked over a building, and didn't even flinch.

Heck, how about the whole cast of Shingu, while we're at it? /images/graemlins/wink.gif

You could probably put the whole non-Sailor Moon cast of Sailor Senshi here, but I think one of the biggest ones is Sailor Mercury. In season 1 of Sailor Moon, all she could do was her Shabon Spray that made fog and sometimes froze enemies. That's it. She didn't even hurt them. But thanks to her, Sailor Moon could finish the MOTD off.

The first one that popped into my head is kinda old-school: Goki from Zenki. He's a new character in the third season, and his powers are purely supportive: create a barrier to protect people, and join his power with the priestess Chiaki's to power up Zenki even further (and add another two minutes to the weekly transformation sequences /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif). Even if he can't do much, I think he's a cool character - definitely a lot more mature than Zenki /images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Etoh and Slayn from Record of Lodoss War.

The first is a priest/healer while Slayn is a wizard.

Also from LODOSS: Leyla, Nesse, Cecil and Hobb.

Melissa and Ila from RUNE SOLDIER; a priestess and a wizard.

Guni from NIGHTWALKER.

I think that Mercury's main job was to provide intelligence (in both meanings of the word /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif) to the others, and let them do most of the fighting. But she did have a few good battles herself.

Another support character is the boy in Yumeria, whose name escapes me at the moment. All that I remember him doing is to "power up" the girls so that they could fight.

His name is Tomokazu Mikuri. If anyone fits the bill as a support type character, he definitely does. Especially when you take into account the premise of how the show works.

Having a brain cramp on his name, but the cute little kid in Pretear. His primary task seemed to be to put up the force field before a battle with Biondios (probably horribly misspelled)!

Support characters that I can think of:

Dragon Ball Z:
-Dende (healer)

Negima (manga)
-Nodoka (can read other people's minds via the Diarium Ejus)
-Konoka (healer)

Yuu Yuu Hakusho
-Botan (healer)
-Yukina (healer)

You're thinking of Shin. Also to be exact according to his character page (http://www.preteardvd.com/characters/shin.php) at ADV's Pretear Site (http://www.preteardvd.com/) it boils down to the following.

[ QUOTE ]
When combat erupts, it’s his job to cast Beyondios, which creates a containment field that ensures that no damage befalls the surrounding area during combat.

[/ QUOTE ]

So yeah he's an extremely important support type character. That's something no one can deny. Especially if they've watched the awesomeness of the series Pretear. *Blatantly trying to promote the series* What?

I'll throw Kiku some support and say Himeno was one of the most interesting characters I'd encountered in quite a while. The thin-pack release of this series is not to be missed.

We now return to our regularly-scheduled topic...

Looks like she hasn't been mentioned yet, but Fuu from Rayearth fits the bill. She mostly uses healing and protection magic, while the others are nothing but attack magic.
