Aside from the fantasy/sci-fi fictional universes, I could think of:

Victorian Romance Emma (London)
Saint Seiya (a bit all over, especially Greece, China, Siberia, nordic and underwater areas)
Nadia: the Secret of Blue Water (many places over the globe, mostly Europe, Africa and islands in Atlantic ocean)

Stellvia (although some characters are japanese, I can't remember if they actually spent any time in Japan from the little time they spent on earth, launch site was in Peru IIRC)

I've not seen it yet. All I knew was, it takes place in the Medditerrean, and featuring planes possibly spanning multiple countries.

I've heard reference to a Kodocha arc that's set in New York. Come to think of it, I don't know of many series with a US setting.

Set in the U.S., off the top of my head:

Project Arms - All of Season 2
Virtua Fighter - Most of the series, anyway.
Marmalade Boy (An entire arc of later episodes. Seeing the Statue of Liberty prominently in the opening credits later on was a shock the first time)

nakimushi

Master of Mosquiton - Shanghai, London, Romania, the Moon.
Master Keaton - Most of the episodes are in Europe, at least one in Central Asia, only a handful are set in Japan.
Black Jack OVA - Many if not most of the episodes aren't in Japan.

Thanks for the reminder. Since I've only seen the first disc of that, I guess it's natural I didn't remember it (even though I think that show is awesome so far). Although it did remind me of another show, although I'm not sure how:

Miami Guns

I think it's because the city in KaleidoStar reminds me visually of the "interpretation" of "Miami" in M.G.

Well, <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>they do everything but say that it's a post-apocalyptic New York City...JFK point/airport(ep12), for example.</span>(I'd list more, but it has been awhile, even for one of my favorite anime of all time)
On-topic: Berserk, which takes place in a fictional, fantasy-based environment perhaps most closely resembling medieval England or Germany...
Divergence Eve 1&amp;2, though both series OCCASIONALLY drift back to Japan, the majority of the show takes place in space on Watcher's Nest or the <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Quantum Core</span>...
Gungrave and Trigun, which are theorized to take place on the same desert world, merely separated by several millenia(and definitely little Japanese influence, effaced in the point at which Akio Otsuka calls Japanese "Japan-go" and where "Rai Dei" is spelled in katakana)

Gundam Wing and I believe G Gundam have parts that take place all over.

Now and Then, Here and There might have parts that don't take place in Japan (<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Assuming Japan is even around anymore durring most of it. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif</span>), but it isn't made clear where the places are located geographically.

It's been a while, but don't the parts of Armitage III that don't take place on Mars take place in Chicago?

Much of Fushigi Yuugi is in China.

A lot of Kyou Kara Maoh takes place in a fictional world that's very Euroupian in flavour.

Hmm, I don't remember where A Wind Named Amnesia or Green Legend Ran take place at all. :/

Starwind Amada

Fullmetal Alchemist - Amestris (a fictional country that resembles early 20th century Europe).

The former is in North America. The journey pretty much crosses the continent. The latter takes place in a future world that's been mostly reduced to desert, with no particular landmarks, so it doesn't really matter. Similarly, Now and Then, Here and There and Photon take place on Earth, but thanks to the time and environmental changes there's no real way of knowing where.

(Some assume that Photon takes place in South America, but this is never substantiated. They probably got the idea from the brief shot of the continent when Lashara's ship warps into orbit.)

Wasn't Ghost in the Shell (the first movie) based in Hong Kong? Or was that just a fictional city modelled after Hong Kong?

Spirit of Wonder - Prince Edward Island
Cyber Formula - World Tour
Area 88 - Fictional Middle Eastern Country
R.O.D the TV - Primarily Japan- but also includes Hong Kong &amp; America, Romania, and the UK.
Texhnolyze - The fictional underground city of Lukuss
Daphne in the Brilliant Blue - Kamchatka City (Fictional city of the future)
Haibane Renmei - Town of Glie (where it is- still unknown- somewhere in limbo perhaps) although the architecture is more European influenced.
Lupin the 3rd - World Tour

For that old-school touch, Genesis Climber Mospeada is set in South and North America. Of course, those who've seen the show have a great many comments about how skewed its geography is...

A lot of the Earth-bound action of Macross takes place outside of Japan, although some of its characters do visit there for an episode.

I always felt it was actually another planet, as the setting was so future.

Anyway, I don't think Saint Tail has been mentioned yet - something supposed to be France (but isn't anything like it).

Didn't Argentosoma take place in the US? Gundam series take place all over earth.

Wolf's Rain screamed post-apocalyptic Eurasia to me, but perhaps others took something quite different out of it. It made it more interesting to me to think of it as a far distant view of the Earth, which I believe was the original intent.

And yeah, Argentosoma was mostly centered in the U.S./Canada, as Pilgrimage Point was centered somewhere near Edmonton or Calgary in Alberta...or at least that's how it appeared on the map (and in my slightly fuzzy memory).
