View Full Version : Can anyone help me identify a couple shows? One fighting based, one music based.

I'm so lazy. Years ago I saw a couple of shows at an anime club that I found intriguing, but I never caught the titles and kept forgetting to follow up on them. As such my memory is pretty shaky but I might as well try and see if anyone can help me.

One show, at first, seemed to be a slice-of-life-ish show about a group of college aged characters in a band trying to make it big. There's one scene where the group is hanging out/practicing in one character's room (the lead singer, I think) and his mother walked in with some snacks. An amusing little conversation followed involving characters saying "Mellow, mellow" in english a few times. Toward the end of the episode is when I realized it's not quite a slice-of-life show. The band was playing a gig and the music (particularly from the lead singer) seemed to be influencing these... forces, I guess. They looked like sprites flying around the band, no one could see them, and the whole sequence seemed to hint at larger things developing. If I had to guess, I'd say this show looked like it was from the late 90's.

The second show was a fighting-based one. A group of characters (5 in all I think, but I only remember 4) one being your standard young hero, a girl of similar age, a big guy and a little wisescracking animal (looked like a Fox). The latter two seemed to have some animosity between them as the big guy and the Fox constantly bickered and got into little scraps. The group seemed to be heading to a tournament. I came into the episode a little late, when I came in the group was having a little scuffle with another group of rivals but it didn't amount to much (basically, "we'll settle this in the tournament" sort of deal). Unfortunately, that's all I really remember. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif If I had to guess, I'd say this show looked like it was from the mid-90's.

Thanks in advance!

Hmm... is the first one Aquarian Age (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1147)? Sounds a bit like it (have the first volume I won in a contest, so I could go back and watch to check).

Yup, that first one is Aquarian Age ep1, scene for scene.
I'm not so sure about the other, though...I'm betting it's something ridiculously obvious that I'd know in a heartbeat described differently...

Yeah, it definitely seems that Aquarian Age was the first thing you were watching from what I see of the first episode. There is a short scene where I heard "mellow mellow" (only in the Japanese version and only from hearsay, since they translated it to something else in subtitles and dub) and the mom walks in.

Cool. /images/graemlins/happy.gif I kinda suspected the first one might be Aqarian Age and I knew the "mellow, mellow" scene would be the tipoff. /images/graemlins/wink.gif I also suspected the second was Flame of Recca, but in reading the video quality section of Chris's reviews I'm thinking that wasn't it. The show I saw seemed to be of a higher budget with more consistent character models.

While I'm not sure - have seen trailer, not the show itself - the second one could be Wild Arms.

I actually have that show and it's not the one I saw back then. I do appreciate you trying, though. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Here is a pic of the main characters and that little fox (http://www.asian-stuff.com/temp_images/recca.jpg) from Flame of Recca, is that it?

That second show does sound a lot like Flame of Recca. I think the animation early on wasn't that bad, I only noticed the inconsistencies during the tournament story arc. But it's also been awhile since I've seen it, & my memory of past animes tends to be a little spotty (too many series with a similar formula).

What in the world? I don't remember any little fox in the Flame of Recca manga...

Um, holy crap, that's the one. Wow, looks like I didn't actually need to start this thread, huh? /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
