Hey there,

I was hoping someone could give me some info on this quick question really - I've just finished watching Full Metal Panic and I thought it was quite cool. What's the second series like? Is it worth my hard earned cash?

Here's some things I'm hoping for...

1. Equal or superior animation.
2. More of that tricky 'love triangle'...
3. Bigger, harder, faster mechs! (Mmmmm... Behemoth... /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif)
4. More fight scenes...

Is santa likely to bring me anything on my list?

Any help would be most appreciated! Cheers - and Take it easy.

Fumoffu's animation quality is way superior. the love triangle is still there, which you will see in vol 3. NO MECHS except for the fumoffu battle suit. fight scenes are few since this season focuses on comedy. trust me go buy it you will definitely enjoy it. or you can just wait for the thinpak i guess.

by the way i've seen the whole thing countless times. very enjoyable and rewatchable.

I don't think Fumoffu is considered the real second season, that was more of an experiemental side project. A make up for all the lost chances at comedy in the first season of the anime.

He's probably referring to The Second Raid.... which I haven't seen. (I prefer dubs, so no fansubs). :p

Fumoffu's animation is slightly better but the character designs are very consistent. The audio and general quality of the release are solid.

There is a bit more but it doesn't advance very much. Word of warning though... you may loathe rubber duckies after watching a certain episode.

Not unless mechanized teddybears count. Fumoffu is almost entirely centered around the school aspect of FMP and has more comedy. There are still lots of instances when sh!t goes boom though. Less than a minute into the first episode in fact. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

Yeah but nothing on the same magnitude as the first series. Same reason as #4.

If you liked FMP! you'll probably like Fumoffu. Whether you get that or coal in your stocking is your own fault. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

One thing to note: Fumoffu is half-season show and a 4 disc release so it's much shorter than FMP!.

Dunno if FMP: The Second Raid is even licensed yet...?

It really sounds like FMP: Second Raid is right up your alley, especially from the last couple of points you listed. Fumoffu doesn't focus on the mecha (and so I like it the best of the three seasons) but on the comedy around the school, similar to the early episodes of season 1. Tessa does make an appearance for a couple of episodes, though, so there is some love triangle content.

Edit: I can only assume you were asking about The Second Raid, but the answers have been half and half TSR/Fumoffu, so you should probably clarify =P

Better.

2. More of that tricky 'love triangle'...

Ehhh... same I guess. It handles the relationship a bit more seriously, but on some level suffers from a lack of the fun lighter moments that made the first season so awesome. But hey, that's what Fumoffu is for.

Haha, not "bigger" but mechs there certainly are.

Absolutely. TSR was focused much much more heavily on the serious action side than season one. This is both good and bad.

So, I loved TSR and absolutely will buy it disc by disc when it comes out, but it just made me THAT much more impatient to buy Fumoffu... maybe now that I have a job again I can splurge a bit, though I really should wait for a set as I initially planned.

Fumoffu is great, but I haven't seen The Second Raid yet...

Given the chance, a question I'd like to ask: did the singles for Full Metal Panic include any booklets or extras of that kind that were not in the thinpack?

Thanks for the pointers folks - I must admit I didn't know of Fumoffu's existence until about a minute ago! It certainly sounds interesting, and I shall check it out as it's available for purchase immediately (I'm quite excited about adding more Full Metal Panic things to my collection!).

The Second Raid sounds like it's exactly what I'm looking for... But it looks like I'm going to have to wait for a bit.

Cheers guys.

Basically, Fumoffu is liscensed, and focuses on school life, and so is probably 95% comedy.

The Second Raid, is either not liscensed yet, or not released at any rate. It deals mostly with Mithril, Action, and is probably 95% serious.

Both are great series. I'd highly recommend both. Here's hoping TSR will come out here in the states soon.

I'm finishing up watching Fumoffu and a simple word of warning: Don't have food or drink anywhere near your body when "The Goddess Comes to Japan" hot springs episode comes on. You will die. Or have a huge mess to clean up. Or both.

Just to play devil's advocate... as publically maligned as that rubber ducky is, it did cause Tessa to drop her towel and fall on her bottom in the first place. Not only that, but we got to enjoy Mao's dialogue as she inspected Tessa's injury as a result.

So it's not all bad, right? Right? Cut the rubber ducky some slack! /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

If we're talking about the love triangle, Second Raid really ruined it for me. While I liked Tessa initially, I found myself disliking her more and more with TSR. Not only that, her behaviour in this season reminded me too much of someone I knew in real life (and strongly disliked).

The FMP thinpak set was before on-disc extras started being removed, so they're all still there in the thinpak set. As for physical extras, the individual discs had nice reversible covers and a little mini poster/foldout thing with character and mech information. Nothing necessary to understanding the show, so if you don't really care about such things, go with the thinpak and save some money.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed Fumoffu, and by the end it ended up becoming one of my favorite comedy animes. Don't wait for a thinpak; that could take a while. Buy it now.

As for Second Raid, haven't seen it yet, but I can't wait.
