I am sure that i don't need to ask about the quality of the R2 when compared to the R1 since it'll be better or at least the same (doubt it since it's Mangel after all) but i was wondering about the sub for the R2, is it a good sub or a dubtitled ?

Also, what does the 2nd disc feature ?

Unfortunately it's dubtitled with extra lines popping up where there's no Japanese dialog. There are Japanese subtitles available. Video looks very nice on my small monitor. Sound options are "original" (mono) and "stereo" for the Japanese, and an English dub, the "should have worn an asbestos suit" version. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

You're better off buying the UK R2 version (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000B9PWEE/qid=1141885423/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/026-3289453-5937207). That one has accurate subtitles, anamorphic widescreen, the original Streamline dub that's on the Japanese R2, as well as some good extras, such as the original storyboards.

The streamline dub (which is on the R2J) is quite bad and full of added profanity where none exists in the original Japanese. Some may like that for nostalgic purposes if that's the first version they saw, but those more concerned about accuracy will probably go for the R1.

Video wise the R1 is letterbox though progressive. The R2J is anamorphic, interlaced and full of really hideous edge enhancement. The colors are slightly better than the R1, but I still give the R1 the overall edge. I think the R2UK uses the R2J master, but I'm not sure if it's a NTSC->PAL conversion or not, which would definitely put it on the bottom of the scale video quality wise. Mazinkaiser would need to use a player that converts PAL to NTSC anyway so there's pretty much no point.

In short, get the R1.

Strange, i thought it was the Manga (note spellingMazinkaizer) dub that had all the added swearing, not the Streamline

You are correct; the Streamline dub takes large liberties with the original dialogue but is contains very little, if any, profanity. While the Manga dub is much more faithful to the original dialogue, it remarkably added profanity where none was needed.

Thanks for the heads-up, i guess i am better off sticking with my R1 release of Mangel (my nickname for Manga) at the end. As for the dub i never watch it so it makes no difference to me whether the Streamline one was better or not /images/graemlins/wink.gif

When you put it that way, I can't really say much for which dub is more accurate than the other, as I haven't done side by side comparisons to the original Japanese. What I do remember is that the R2 is dubtitled and it has the added profanity. That just totally ruined the mood and feel of the movie IMO, and something that is more in tone with the original Japanese dub is called for, even if that may be at the sacrifice of some translation accuracy. The R2J is pretty much unacceptable for sub watchers in that regard, and dub watchers will pretty much have to make a choice as to which dub they (dis)like the most.
