I saw a couple of threads about Kamichu! in the R1 forum. They had a lot of information about the R1 release but little about the show, of course that is appropriate for that forum. But it was obvious that a lot of people are excited about the show itself, and not just the box and extras. So that is why I am asking about it here.

I did a Google search and got a good idea of what the show is about. This animefringe (http://www.animefringe.com/magazine/2005/11/feature/04.php) article seems to give a good description. But I cannot really tell if this is all comedy or if there is a significant amount of serious content. What I really want is a cute comedy, but a bit of drama, but not tragedy, is fine.
Is there anything with an R1 release that Kamichu! can be compared to? Due to the spiritual/magical aspect I am wondering if it is anything at all like Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away or Someday's Dreamers.

Also, the animefringe article implies that if I like the Kamichama Karin manga, which I do through two volumes, then I will also like Kamichu!. Does anybody have an opinion on that?

Right now I am thinking that the first DVD will probably be worth my money, but I would like to get some more information if possible.

TIA

It's very cute and slow. It's like the anime titles you mentioned. Yurie is the shiznit-she's why this show is so awesome. Her expressions are absolutely priceless. It should be interesting to see who plays her in the dub.

Kamichu (http://www.animenfo.com/animetitle,1733,vblyab,kamichu____kami.html) is a cute little story about a girl who becomes a goddess. The story is mostly about her getting used to her powers and the antics she and her friends get into. I suppose it's kinda like Spirited Away but more slice of life. Personally I like the story, characters and atmosphere of Kamichu much better than Kamichama Karin.

Thank you. That is what I needed to know.
This is going to be a preorder for me.

Thanks to WRX also.

I agree with what the others have said -- this show is charming, cute, sweet and funny. Its not particularly sexy and there really are no epic plots or even, so far as I've seen, any regular villains to speak of. Aside from the character interactions, one of the things I really enjoyed was the way in which the fantastic - spiritual things of myth and imagination - is often portrayed as a common inhabitant of a modern Japanese city in the most delightful matter-of-fact way.

Judging from your requirements and likes, I would say that this is very likely something you will enjoy.
