The character designs feel retro to me. But from the looks of the site, it could be something that I'd enjoy.

They almost feel a little Makoto Shinkai-esque, don't they?

The Earth SOS illustrations were created by Shigeru Komatsuzaki, and published in the 1940s. Komatsuzaki is a famous Japanese sci-fi illustrator and model designer who worked on many popular projects during his lifetime, including the Thunderbirds puppet TV series, Atragon and The Mysterians. Atragon was in fact partially based on an original, illustrated story by Komatsuzaki, "The Undersea Kingdom" (Kaitei Okoku). He also designed the ship itself. Komatsuzaki passed away in 2002 at the age of 86.
Project Blue Earth SOS will be directed by Tensai Okamura, based on a script by Ryota Yamaguchi. Character designs will be by Noriyuki Matsutake, while Shinji Aramaki and Jin Fukuchi will handle mechanical designs.

The anime was produced in HD resolution, and 5.1ch Dolby Digital audio. It's being said the audio and visual experience is very near that of a quality approaching theatrical film. Mr. Komatsuzaki will unfortunately not be able to see this great homage to his artistic vision, having passed away in 2002 at 86 years of age.

Apparently they're really aiming for quality on this one. I think it'll be a interesting show, and am really looking forward to it this summer. Apparently the episodes will be a hour long, and air monthly.
