View Full Version : Things you have learned about yourself from watching anime

I'll start. I can tell some things from my viewing patterns and preferences. For one thing, I lean very heavily toward comedy, which tells me that I need cheering up at the end of the day, more often than not. So maybe I'm the depressive type by nature, or maybe I need to re-evaluate my feelings about my job. et cetera.

Also, the weirder a show is, the more readily I can relate to it. /images/graemlins/stunned1.gif

I like cartoons. (But I knew that already.)

Actually the blending of disparate art forms into a unified whole to tell a sustained narrative, but you get my drift. And funny wins out most of the time over drama, although a very special episode of Pokemon can get the old tear ducts a pumpin'. I don't prefer any genre over another as I like to mix it up quite a lot in my limited viewing time. Some days old school mecha is the only way to go, (loud and proud, baby!)other days gimme some of that magical girl goodness. And the quirk factor is good for a change of pace.

I view it as purely escapist and my life out in the world doesn't influence what I watch or when. Although now I do think everyone needs a Menchi. You know. Just in case. And I didn't, before anime. So maybe that's what I've learned. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Well, yeah, that is true for a lot of us. I wouldn't have any CC debt, and my college debt would be severely dented. But it's all good, since I have learned a few things from anime, including the acceptance of things that make up the core of me.

I learned that I am a pervert.
Well, actually I already knew that, but now it is just too obvious to be denied. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

I also learned that I am a mature male (OK I knew that) who likes shows that are targeted at young girls. And I did not know that.
This is almost more embarassing than being a pervert. /images/graemlins/shy10000.gif

Amen...... I love shojou as well. Don't know why, just do. Probably because I'm a romantic deep down under all the cynicism. And at sixty, I'm definitely mature. Well except maybe mentally?

Also have learned that I spend waaaaaay too much money on this habit!

Oh yah..... I probably also need a life!

I've learned that my feelings concerning melodrama is that it should be locked in a box and drowned in a river.

I also like shows targeted at young girls.

That I am generally accepting of the fantastical, even moreso than other people I know.

That I am neither a sub or dub advocate; whichever sounds better to me at the time is what I go with.

I've learned that my Japanese isn't as bad as I thought it was.

...and the last nail in the coffin: that I spend way too much money on anime.

I found out that I'm really not alone in feeling any of the insecurities I have.

That's probably why anime is so cool, it's easy to identify to the characters.

Before I watched anime, I had no idea that as a heterosexual female, watching romantic stories between two men could be so utterly satisfying.

That I have the mental age of a 10-15 year old Japanese kid (most of my favourite series are Shounen and/or fighting based), I'm a much bigger perv in real life than when it comes to animated porn (despite my real life "adult" collection, I don't really go for hentai that much), my anime double would probably be Shinji Ikari. Now whether that's a good thing or not is another matter...

Hmmm, your title for this thread is kind strange...! Did you just learn that you like strange comedy? Did you lean that you are the depressive type? Did you learn you need to change Job? /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif Some of the people roaming these forums scare me sometime. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Truer words have never been spoken. It's a bizzare and inexplicable phenomenon.

Well, there's a difference between feeling that some things are probably true about yourself, and looking at a DVD shelf that is pretty much screaming it at you. One might rephrase it as "Things you have CONFIRMED about yourself from watching anime." One might, if one wasn't too lazy to go back and change it. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

1. That I'm a loving, sensitive, and extremely flawed person.
2. Animation is just as valid an artform as live-action films/TV.
3. I have a soft spot for sappy, sentimental mush. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
4. That people will do the most foolish things for love.

This is a interesting topic. I'll list mine numerically.

1. That I love complex stories like GITS SAC and others.

2. That I have a thing for "slice of life" shows(Emma, Honey and Clover and etc)

3. That certain characters have turned me into a pervert /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif

4. I like a wide variety of music, and will listen to a wide variety of music(classical, rock, and etc.)

but perhaps the most important thing that I've learned about myself from watching anime is:

5. That I enjoy a good story, regardless if it's live action or not. In most series I genuinely care for the characters, and think of them as real people.

I've rediscovered my lighter side thanks to anime. That may sound cheesy but it's true. It's so easy to laugh and enjoy myself watching anime. It's also brought out my dorky sense of humor far more.

I learned that I don't get offended easily (though I kinda knew that before watching anime. Anime made it more obvious).

I can feel protective, loving, angry, sad, happy, lustful for & of fictional characters portrayed in animated drawings, whose voices are spoken in a foreign language with only a 3rd party's translation to understand them.

Before anime, it was only Bambi's mother & Snowy the pig (in Animal Farm) that moved me.

1. That I like bishoujo of a variety of ages.

2. I like magical girls.

3. I hate stories where the main is the center of the universe and no one else matters. That I much prefer stories where multiple people matter.

4. I prefer characters to have varying hair styles and hair colors.

5. That I'm not a fan of forced tragedies.

6. That on occasion I find it nice to watch slice of life and relaxing anime. Ie take a break from the "We're all gonna DIE" type stuff.

7. That I need to think of more lessons and that I may edit this message later. What?

I've learned that cat-ears and a tail can make girls incredibly attractive.

-I hate harem animes (Maburaho, Girls Bravo, Yumeria, Mouse)
-I dislike "Monster of the Week" plots, typically found in magical girl shows. Yes, the monsters may be varied but none of them are given much screen time to be very memorable.
-OAVs need to make a comeback in the worst way, if nothing else for the higher quality animation.
-I don't like long-running animes. Anything longer than 26 episodes is usually a turn-off for me, unless it has a significant reason to go so long. Ex: Inu-Yasha, Naruto, One Piece, probably Bleach as well.

1. I love shows which can make me both laugh and cry.
2. My overall opinion of shows is highly influenced on whether the ending can move me to tears (in a good way).
3. I love yuri.
4. I despise pointless fanservice where all you see is underwear or breasts with no nipples.
5. Harem shows are only worth it if the main character is someone who goes all out and is deserving of all the love he/she gets (Otaru Mamiya, Taro Hanaukyo, etc.)
6. There needs to be more yuri.
7. While I am forgiving of shoddy animation, I cannot forgive excessive use of still frames and cheap tricks of not showing a person's mouth to avoid animating the mouth moving.

Those don't have a significant reason for going on.

The shikon jewel should have never been broken into millions of pieces.

Naruto would only be 26 episodes if it was actually about Naruto.

One Piece could of been hella shorter. (Lot of minutes spent on nothing, like in Dragon Ball Z)
