View Full Version : Characters with their "hair down"
TOPIC MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS
Upon watching the most recent episode of Fate/Stay Night, we have a scene where it basically shows Rin with her "hair down", or not the primped and proper person we see through the series. While I don't mind that /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif(Rin is hot with long hair), it got me thinking. Most of the time in a series, we get "one version" of the character. For example in something like GITS SAC, we rarely see Motoko's personal life at all. There are a few moments, but nothing TO telling.
So I figured why not make a thread, asking people what there favorite scenes/moments were when a character has "their hair down".
For me, one of them had to be during the FMP series(FMP, Fumoffu, Second Raid) where we would see Kaname wake up in pajamas, and clumsily wander around for a few seconds.
I really couldn't think of other characters where they do something like this, but I'm sure that I'm missing out on a couple.

Sophia letting her hair down in Last Exile was very potent, especially when she kisses Claus that one time.
I also love it when Saki lets hers down in Fruits Basket. It's so long and gorgeous. Same for Robin in Witch Hunter Robin and Cher in Wolf's Rain.
That part of Last Exile kind of left me with a "Huh?" feeling. But I do agree that it was interesting to see Sophia, who was the XO, and pretty "proper" most of the time being a normal person.

One that comes immediately to mind is Yukino Miyazawa of His and Her Circumstances. In the beginning episodes she plays the totally together model student at school who transforms into an average angsty teen and literally "lets her hair down" the moment she arrives home.

Thats a good one to. She acts one way, and looks like she spends three hours in the morning trying to look "perfect". Then when Souichirou comes to the door, she is a gym/track suit and her haired pulled back heh.

Although not completely black & white, I guess the classic anime character is Misato Katsuragi in Evangelion.
When she's directing operations, she's efficient, sharp, uniformed & on top of the crisis.
But when off-duty she boozes, has an untidy apartment, dresses like Daisy Duke /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif & consumes food you or I would not feed a penguin!

Mizuho Kazami from Please Teacher alternates from the teacher/librarian look (hot) to the relaxed, at-home in lingerie look (also hot). /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif
I may be one of the few who think this, but Lum from Urusei Yatsura, whose hair is normally down, I think looks better most of the time when wearing street clothes and has her hair up. It usually only happens when she's on a date with Ataru, since even at school in her fuku she keeps her hair down. Still, I like seeing Lum in something other than her tiger-stripe bikini once in a while.
And it would be criminal not to mention Pacifica from Scrapped Princess, since she was my avatar for a while. There are a few scenes where she has her hair completely down, and it looks really nice. She also looks good in that black wig she sports (once or twice) when in disguise.

the scene in Azumanga Daioh when it showed what the girls all do before bed. There are a couple scenes throughout the series where Chiyo has her pigtails out.
When the girls from Mai-Otome have their hair loose, I just go ga-ga ;D

It barely counts since it's the only time we see him this way in the whole series, but the first appearance of Amuro Ray in Mobile Suit Gundam. He's in his boxer shorts, and only half-listening to his friend's protestations that he has once again forgotten to eat. I think if we had been shown a little more of this techie / hacker side of the character, the way in which he quickly picked up on the Gundam's operation would have seemed more justified and it wouldn't seem so much a cliche nowadays.
Not that I mind cliches... XD

Ed from Fullmetal Alchemist has his hair down a couple times, usually while Winry is working on his arm.
Hawkeye also lets her hair down near the end of the series.

Yes. Yes he does. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif So cute and vulnerable...
Usagi and Minako from Sailor Moon let their hair down in some episodes, if I remember correctly. I don't know about Matoko and Chibiusa though. I think that Chibiusa did...
Keel did in one episode of Tide-Line Blue.
Ruki in Digimon Tamers does in a couple episodes.
For me, this is one thing I actively look for when I like a series. If a character normally has their hair up in the series, they must show at least one picture/scene/whatever with their hair down. To me, it makes the character(s) more fleshed out.

Emma is another good one. I was debating mentioning it(I'm a huge Emma fan), but I decided to go with something a lot of people could relate to. Although when Emma lets her "hair down" during the series, you can see why a lot of people are after her, heh.

Makoto does indeed let her hair down during the episode when she is sick and Minako is trying to fix everyone up. It was briefly while she was on the phone. That would be my choice for "letting the hair down" since that was my first "letting the hair down experience." Other hair downs I kind of like was Hanajima (Saki) from Fruits Basket and Robin from Witch Hunter Robin.
Actually to through in a more recent anime I saw, Yumi lets it down a little too near the end of the first season in Maria-sama ga Miteru.
IIRC, Hawkeye didn't have hair at the begining of FMA. It was kind of buzzed so in a way she let it grow, put up, then let it down.

I actually just saw that episode earlier this week. "Look at me, I'm a little genius... I'm ever so smart!!" lol, when Chiyo took her hair out right after, I was hoping for a Chiyo to do her interpretation of Tomo. oh well, guess she's too mature for that game

Just saw this the other day and it reminded me of this thread:
Benten from Urusei Yatsura (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b144/Bandit_DM/Benten.jpg)
A very rare moment when Benten's hair isn't tied up by her chain. Rawr.
