I was surprised that Chris gave Ultramaniac V6 a B+ in his review. Last I heard, it was fairly generic so I relegated it to my rental pile. Still haven't gotten around to renting any of the DVDs yet, but maybe I should. I might even consider buying it. I do tend to like a lot of mahou or mahou + harem shows as long as there a story or character of interest in there somewhere. Adored CCS. Really liked Pretear and Sailor Moon. Enjoying Maburaho (but is it really mahou?) Least favorite mahou show would probably be Magic User's Club.
So is Ultramaniac getting good enough to where I should take a look at it?

Well, I like the show well enough. It is generic but it is a well done example of the genre and dosen't try to be anything more. There are no real villans so it avoids the fight-of-the-week pattern and the quest for magical stones only crops up every few episodes. It is more of a comic soap-opera with magic thrown in to liven things up. Nothing earth-shattering or particularly new but a fun watch if you're in the mood. I will say that to me it feels more like MUC than Sailor Moon.

It's not a great show, but it's a nice enough shoujo show with characters that are done well. After all, it's from the same mangaka as Marmalade Boy, and while MB is better, the characters at times seem to have a spark.
I'd say the first 4 volumes are 'C' grade material, volume 5 picks things up a bit with the last two episodes and I'm looking forward to the next volume. After the first 5 volumes I'd still say you'd probably be better off renting it, but these last 7 or so episodes do look to be better than the rest.
