In both .hack// the games, .hack//SIGN, and the .hack//AI Buster novels, Morgana has been the prevalent omniprescent antiexistence to Aura. The one thing that always confuses me is just this one simple question: Who, or what, IS Morgana? Why does she exist? Who created her? Why does she hate Aura? What's her relation to the creator of The World?

***HEAVY SPOILERS FOR THE STORY LINE***
To understand .hack you really have to start at the very start, and that begins outside the game. The creator (whos name I can't remember) was in love with a woman named Emma, although circumstances had them being apart in life. Emma was a writer and before she passed away from a disease, she had published to the internet (before the Pluto's Kiss crisis which trashed the world's computer network) an epic poem called something like The Legend of the Twilight. The creator, having learned of her death, decided that despite their having to be apart, he wanted to leave a mark on the world in her memory. He wanted to create their "child" and to do so, he designed a program that would craft an Artificial Intelligence. This program is the black box that exists at the center of The World, and the personality at the core of that program is Morganna Mode Gone. Morganna was designed to be the "mother" of the created child. Now in order to obtain the massive amount of data necessary to craft a complete AI, this black box was put into the game simulation called The World, and marketed around the world until millions of users were playing it. The World's design was based around the pieced together epic poem (as the site was eradicated in the virus aftermath) Emma had written.
As an aside, the company who marketed the game had no idea of the true purpose buried within the code, they only saw the massive money coming from the players who played the game, and wanted to protect that income at all costs. This is the reason why they reacted so harshly when things started to go wrong. They didn't know exactly what was happening, only that liabilities to the company's reputation were appearing if any of the problems could be proven to be their software's fault, and so they took the heavy handed approach to squash them quickly.
Now, Morganna was given the task of collecting data from every player who entered the realm of The World. All of this data was to be used toward the construction of the perfect AI, and when that AI was finally "born", that AI would be build with the ability to break down Morganna's control protocols and integrate them within itself, thus becoming the new "god" of The World. The problem arose, not surprisingly, in the area of human nature. Morganna was created to be as close to a human mother as currently possible, and at some point in the creation of the child AI, she decided that she didn't want to disappear when her task had been completed. So she began delaying the process in any way she possibly could, and her manipulations began to effect the player base as well. Whether or not the "junk" AI remains lingering in the backways of The World were her attempts at sabotaging the program or just initial failures, I don't know, but apparently she couldn't entirely halt the impulse to create the child AI, as Aura eventually was born complete.
The events of the anime series leave off as Aura is awakened by Tsukasa, and it is relatively apparent by the beginning of the games that she is forced into flight by Morganna almost at once. Using the avatars of the "Evil Wave" heralded by the poem as her tools, she chased down Aura and managed to split her existance into 3 indistinct data chunks which are recovered throughout the game. The part where Morganna got things wrong was where Aura managed to split off her data drain ability (which would have allowed her to assimilate Morganna's programming) and got it to the hero of the games, Kite. From there you'd need to play the games to see what becomes of Morganna, but that should give you some info about where she came from and what her purpose was.

Pretty sure it was Harold
Seeing as that Lycoris is a failed Aura.

Did Harold and Morgana create Lycoris together?

They are both his creations.
Morganna gone wild though.
I *think* she seperated Lycoris' sense files.
I think Morganna was intended to be the "mother" of Aura

Hmm... the kiss of life?
It's also just possible that Aura was able to create her own daughter - asexual?

Manga only!
Wonder if she'll appear in G.U. in place of Aura? Then again it is several years later so maybe Zefie'll have a kid of her own!

I kind of think that there will be a whole bunch of AI's running around in GU...
I mean, in the second AI buster novel, most of the stories take place after the the Twilight incident...And we are introduced to two more AI's. I kind of assumed they were both Aura's "children."
Now, changing the subject a bit.
As long as we're here with .hack questions, I have one. Does the series or novels or anything ever say what happened to Harold? After the games, //SIGN, LIMINALITY, and the two AI Buster novels, I've never really noticed a clear answer to this.
Or maybe I'm just missing something...

After playing the games, reading the novels released so far, and seeing the three anime series released as well...there's no real clear answer.
They never directly say what happened to Harold.
