As a fan of the first anime, I'm looking forward to seeing the direction they take with this version. As long as the story flows well and all the girls get decent focus then everything will be fine for me. In any case this is happy news. Oh wait it also means yet another Kanon series then will never be licensed. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif Yes I'm still bitter.

This Kanon-remake development just adds more speculation-fuel that KyoAni will also do the Clannad TV-version since Toei's gonna be doing the movie-version.

It's another game from KEY. Interestingly, although it's the same type of game as AIR and Kanon (and they usually come with sex scenes), even the original version of Clannad was "clean."

IIRC there was supposed to have been a fair amount of controversy when KEY first announced how they would be handling Clannad. But I'm not that familiar with the situation, so I can't comment on it in any real depth. I just remember thinking that it was kind of interesting, when I first heard about it.
I know I'm going to end up ordering the KyoAni-Kanon R2s as soon as they go up, heh. Same goes for Clannad, if they do end up making a Clannad TV series.

Well, since a license for Kanon seems to be impossible, this is at least another chance, in a way...
Sigh, or probably not. We can hope though.

Well, KimiNozo was licensed, so clearly anything is possible. I imagine that a lot rides on how well that show does. If it sells well enough, Kanon, Air, and other similar shows seem slightly more plausible.

You're right that Kiminozo may help Kanon and Air, but it still depends on why they think Kiminozo sold well here. Assuming it does sell well here of course. Of course there is also the issue of how much each series costs to license. Ah well just have to hope for the best.

Yay! Yay! Yay!
I love Kanon! Great show and I'm glad that Kyoto Animation is taking on production for the remake of the series. I have a good feeling that if the animation turns out like with AIR, it's going to look gorgeous.
I hope that this gets a chance to be licensed. It is possible. Actually, didn't that happen with Hanaukyo Maid Team where the remake, but not the original was licensed?
With this remake, this would be a good way for both Kanon and AIR to get picked up for US release.
I had heard rumors that a Clannad anime was in the works. I haven't played the game yet, but I'm interested to see what they make out of it for an anime series.

Geneon-Japan did the remake for Hanaukyo Maid Tai called La Verite, alongside pseudo-remakes of Comic Party (revolution) and To Heart (remember my memories). There were old rumors of some issues between Geneon and MOE regarding the original Hanaukyo Maid Tai anime.

We can only hope and wish. This Kanon-remake will most likely drive the licensing-cost of Kanon up. Also, there are persistent rumors about Air's (and Kanon's) license being expensive. Who knows? Air being showcased as a Blu-Ray anime-title may suggest that Sony/Aniplex may be the ones to bring it to R1-land. Or not. /images/graemlins/relief.gif

The remake will hopefully fix the problem of their eyes being too big. I hope they will choose a different ending though as I don't want it to merely follow the original scene by scene. Considering that the Air movie had a little nudity, I'm wondering whether this new version will have any nudity? /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif Oh...and considering all the Mai x Sayuri yuri fanart on the net, I hope they will also pump up the girl-girl subtext. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Well even if they choose the same basic ending, there is always a chance they may not reach the conclusion the same way. Either way I'm prepared to accept whichever girl wins. Including the open-ended choice. Just as long as it makes sense in the context of the story.

I've been hearing that rumor a lot lately, especially about AIR with supposedly the licensing costs.
You mentioned Aniplex. A few series I can think of having involving Aniplex if I'm not mistaken are Full Metal Alchemist, Spiral, and ROD TV.
I do like that Sony chose AIR TV as one of their showcase titles for the new Blu-Ray format. Very good choice to show off the beautiful quality of the series.

Anything but the open-ended ending. I'm sick and tired of harem anime with an indecisive lead that doesn't make a clear choice by the end.
Suwako Moriya
03-26-2006, 12:06 AM
Granted I do feel that the open ended choice is the worst option, but the fact they still use it is why I'm prepared for it. It also helps that I realize the main male character in most of these series is still going to school and that sometimes people are not ready to settle down that fast. Yet we expect them to choose a girl and screw her within five minutes after two or more girls breathe next to him.
Still Kanon is not just about who the guy chooses. It's about the back story of each girl and their interaction with Yuuichi. I feel it's more important for the story of each girl to be done well then for Yuuichi to stand on stage and someone to say "Congratulation", he is your prize.
Speaking of open ended, I often wonder how far does the guy's choice have to go? Can he just simply declare his love for the girl and start dating her? Does he have to marry her for the choice to count?
Finally don't blame the guy for not deciding. Blame the staff for not letting him decide. No blame the fanatical anime fans who think it's a crime for the guy to choose any girl besides their precious. Which causes companies to avoid making a choice. Or you can blame me for absolutely no reason. Wait scratch that last option. Blame Piano instead. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Impossible because of everything. Genre, age (perceived, not real), alleged price, market, you name it. Kiminozo being licensed was a surprise, but not as big a surprise to me as Kanon would be.

Ah! The delimma of choosing! Well, the problem is that making anime is a business. If you get too creative and chose a girl you will alienate people and hurt your DVD sales.
Shuffle is a example of a way to get around that problem. A girl was chosen, but at the end there was still the possibility of another of the girls taking the price with the Poligamy angle.
Another example is girl Bravo, <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> a girl was chosen, but they left the possibilities open and they even added a new girl at the end. I believe girl bravo is more open ended that shuffle. There are not actual rejections in Girl BRavo.</span>

Yeah. The character-designs of the girls are fairly close. Yuuichi's more of a stud now. Shiori's alot prettier now, too.
The biggest difference I saw was the more beautiful and more richer backgrounds and the better animation-techniques being done by KyoAni. The old Toei-version was charming, but just so primitive in the animation-dept.

Wait are you trying to imply it's possible for Ayu not to be adorable? /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif In other words yes she was adorable in that scene. In any case I'm so looking forward to this. Now if only there was a way to make a Kanon a 24 episode series, but I'm sure at most it will be 13.
I'm not sure about the new design of Yuuichi yet. Not that I think it sucks or anything, it's just that I'm used to the old design. Still taken on its own merit the new design of him, I can live with. So it doesn't matter too much in the end.
Besides this way if the new series does end differently than the original. We can pretend that there is a machine designed to create custom Yuuichis. Each sent to a different Kanon universe to determine the fate of all the girls. Okay now I'm just being silly, but I don't care. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I have no idea how they can do that. I mean, it felt like I had to drag myself through the first few episodes of the original. And the last thing I want them to do is drag out the sad episodes.
This could be a very good thing or a very bad thing. Looks like we'll have to wait until Fall to know for sure -_-

Mm, can't wait. Gonna have to get a digital tuner so I can watch it as it airs, since the analog broadcast of BS-i is letterboxed and comes in worse than all of the other BS channels on my building's cable.

I like the new design much better. Reason is that Yuuichi is really a bit of a bastard (though not as much as Yukito in AIR), added with the fact that he actually quite dislike how that he had to live in the place because *you know why if you've seen the anime/played the game*, so the harder expression he had on his face fits him very well IMO.
Either way the trailer is gorgeous, though I didn't expect anything less from Kyoani in the first place. They seem to be devoting a big chunk to Mai which is definitely a good thing as her story barely got touched upon in the original anime. My only complain is that there's too little Nayuki. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I like the new Yuuichi, I just never thought the one in the original series was that all. He was kind of a generic guy while he got all the attention of all those girls. HE never hit me with the type of guy that because he turned two girls down they would turn lesbian. /images/graemlins/devil.gif (just being silly) /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I have mixed feelings on this new series-length.
On the positive, 24-eps of KyoAni stuff is awesome and stuff. On the negative, I dread of fillers.
I can only hope that KyoAni expands on the Misuz..errr.. Sayuri /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif and the Kaori episodes. My fave girl-with-issues-and-sword, Mai, should also have more episodes for her coz she r0x0r! /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Sushi-Y from suki-forum translated the mag:
----
<font color="blue">Q: What was the process that led to the decision to produce this anime?</font>
A: It was mainly because last year, the "AIR" anime that was produced by Kyoto Animation was incredibly well received by the viewers. Along with that flow, we have received many calls from the viewers who wanted the same production company to animate "Kanon", another Key creation, as well. With that as a push, we realized this project.
<font color="blue">Q: What was the reaction of KyotoAnimation from hearing this news? </font>
A: Just like during "AIR", they're very excited to go at it. There are a lot of staff members who loved "Kanon" to begin with as well. Since they will be creating this with their own sentiments, I believe this will definately become a good creation.
<font color="blue">Q: What are the highlights of this creation for you?</font>
A: Although "AIR" was a story that revolved around one single tale, "Kanon", by nature, is a story that places the attractive points of each character up front. That's why, rather than making the story revolve around a single heroine, we wish to portray all 5 heroines equally. We want to be able to make the fans of each heroine think "that was great" after watching the anime. And so, in order for us to portray 5 individuals properly, we plan to secure slots for 2 cours to make a total of 24 episodes. Since without this much room, we wouldn't be able to portray the character's personalities and their daily lives, which would make it hard for the viewers to feel empathy. Also, we want to avoid something like "Ayu's story until episode X", "Nayuki's story until episode X"...... We do not plan to compose the anime into something like a collection of short stories. We will make it so that episode 1 until 24 will all be connected as 1 whole story.
<font color="blue">Q: Will it remain faithful to the original game?</font>
A: The original game is treated very importantly for both Kyoto Animation and the directing team from Key. We will faithfully reproduce all the good points from the game version. Result-wise, even if there's going to be original parts in the anime, they will not ruin the characters. This area was already proven in "AIR", so I don't think there should be any worries.
<font color="blue">Q: Finally, please leave a message for the readers.</font>
A: We will make an anime that can be enjoyable not only to the fans of "Kanon", but also to all the people who did not play the game as well. For the readers of G's Magazine who are familiar with the game, we hope you can look forward to seeing just what kind of anime Kyoto Animation will make, out of a wonderful story that doesn't fade away even 6 years after its release.

Awesomeness. I doubt the extra length will be a handicap -- if anything, it'll make it that much better. "Filler" isn't necessarily bad, and since I like the cast, I'll be glad to see more development and interaction. And they won't have to just throw any given girl's storyline into 1-2 eps.
Anyway, I saw the little promo trailer and it looks good! Nice animation, fluid, detailed... retaining the original designs but updating them to be more balanced and cleaner. How it holds up over 24 eps of real animation is another story, but I like it.

Ah cool so AIR really was a huge factor in getting a remake of Kanon. Everyone thank Misuzu herself. It's also good to know that a lot of the staff loves Kanon which gives them more of a motivation to do a good job.
Finally I'm glad they are going to avoid the tired old "one story at a time" problem. Hopefully they can balance it right because to be honest while it's nice to have the stories intertwined, I'd hate to have a situation where at the last episode they rush conclusions for every aspect of the story. I guess balance and timing is the key.

I'm kind of wondering if they're going to use "Last Regrets" as a possible OP theme for the series since I heard that in the preview and also in a short TV commercial advertising the Prelude DVD.
I'm really excited about this, and again, I hope this gets picked up for R1 release.

It is good that so many people are so psyched about the show. I myself will avoid the show, much like I am doing with Nana. I might watch it once everything is out if I hear that they went with another girl. Too much Shoujo is bad for my health, only Shoujo anime I am watching right now is the good witch of the west. I know Kanon is not really Shoujo, but it kind of borders in that category.
Suwako Moriya

Well even if it ends up choosing the same girl, the events may play out differently. Plus a girl doesn't have to win the "prize: to get good story focus. Either way I still think the worst thing to do is be dead set for or against a specific girl. With 24 episdoes instead of only 13. The destination may be the same or different, but in the end the path to it will be longer and with more scenery.

Yes and no. It depends on what romanization system you use:
http://wason.library.cornell.edu/e-cours...20TABLE2004.htm (http://wason.library.cornell.edu/e-course/japan/Open%20with%20MSWORD%20JAPANESE%20ROMANIZATION%20T ABLE2004.htm)
There's at least one more in addition to those that I've noticed in names, where they use ow instead of ou to indicate a long vowel for instance. Familiar examples to the west are names such as Shuzilow HA and Masamune Shirow. Just as you have multiple ways to spell names in kana/kanji you can also choose how you want to spell your name using the latin alphabet. People also change this sometimes, so you'll have someone credited using different spellings for their name depending on the show. This isn't the US licensee being lazy (at least usually), but instead it's the Japanese dictating name spellings.
And as Bluwacky correctly surmised I'd definitely not be happy with Itou putting personal his touch on Kanon /images/graemlins/tongue.gif. As much as I don't like Haruhi, I'm really starting to become more annoyed with Haruhi fandom than the show itself at this point. It's over, done with, finished - let it rest. At least until there's a Haruhi 2 or something (and no, Kanon won't be that thankfully). You can have your Haruhi, and I'll have my Kanon, Air and Shuffle etc.

Of course I do also think his style was a perfect match for both Haruhi and Shana. Between him and Taraku Uon I wish they'd do more work in anime than they do now.

Haruhi fandom or not (which was more of a response in general to all the yaysayers, not you specifically) I just don't think it would be a good fit for Kanon, even something in between as a compromise. For a similar example take what they've done with Tenchi from TinT and beyond - I really hate the designs (among other things). It's just not Tenchi anymore. While others may not have liked TU, I had no problems with it simply because they stuck to the designs and music. It wasn't as good as the OVA sure, but at least it was still Tenchi.
So as you can understand I'm rather protective of Kanon, as I'd rather see they stick to the storyline and characters as they are now, and not go off tweaking and updating it to a more contemporary or different style. I imagine most Kanon fans would feel the same. Kyoani's done some really good work with Air in that regard so I'm not really worried about it - I'm excited even, and have Kanon Prelude on order at amazon /images/graemlins/happy.gif.
And here I thought Type-Moon fans were protective of their shows. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif I see you point and agree it's admirable to honor the original style as much as possible. I'm just imaginging possibilities since I'm not too heavily attached to the original.

Ah, but the faithful don't need dialogue. /images/graemlins/wink.gif :joke: The uninitiated knows that its KyoAni (SHnY, Air).
July Animage CD carried ep. 1 of Air, a trailer for Kanon 2006 and 1 Ayu wallpaper. It's been in Animage for 2 months now (June and July).
Kanon Prelude (http://202.234.167.56/detailview.html?KEY=PCBX-50812) doesn't contain dialogue from the program so far. They probably want to maximize the "wow" factor and limit spoilers by handing out little bits. Then, everybody will be glued to their sets or Tivo in October.

I pre-ordered the Prelude DVD a while back, and I can't wait. Just one more month. I'll definitely be looking forward to Oct. This along with Season 2 of Negima will probably be among the top watched shows for the fall season.
In answering someone's question earlier, some people noted that they are using Last Regrets and The Place Where the Wind Arrives(?) for the OP and ED. I have a feeling that they'll come up with beautiful OP and ED sequences to fit these songs. I think we'll see the clean OP and ED on the Prelude DVD. That's my guess anyways.
Please someone license this for the US! This is one of my top 5 favorite series. Ayu-chan!

I'm still at lost at how fantastically beautiful it was.
This is better than AIR, yes I said it, it's that beautiful. It's so beautiful that I simply can't imagine how Kyoani can keep the quality for a 24 episode series, but if they can pull it off, Kanon remake would easily be THE best anime for the next two season.

You won't be disappointed. In the first episode they faithfully reproduce several famous scenes from the game, right down to using the exact same composition from the game art, and it looks just like how I remembered it from the game, except it looks BETTER than the game art. It was that nice and not only it was overflowing with quality, you can simply tell the staff had to be fans of the game itself to be able to reproduce it so beautifully at that level.

I certainly liked Kanon as well, but I won't be a bit surprised if this is significantly better. More episodes to tell the story, KyoAni's trademark sky-high production values, updated designs (I thought the old ones were cute, but hardly high quality, don't hurt me too badly) etc. I haven't played the game though, so I can't comment from that direction.

I doubt that you would get that feeling, as Hideki is a day-dreamer good-for-nothing-type comedy harem lead character, whereas Yuuichi is a smarty-pants that is very much like Kyon, or even Yukito from AIR, thus there shouldn't be anything of Yuuichi that would remind you of Hideki.

Now that I'd managed to listen to the remake-vocals from the 3-min preview, here are my thoughts:
Mariko Kouda as Nayuki == wow! she was projecting a more demure Nayuki this time.
Akemi Satou as Shiori == same as Mariko. subtle improvement, but quite a bit lovelier to listen to this time.
Yukari Tamoura as Mai == she only had one line she uttered: zenzen. But it's still the awesome Mai! /images/graemlins/cool.gif
Mayumi Iizuka as Makoto == same genki-ness
Yui Horie as Ayu == same
Tomoko Kawakami as Sayuri == omg! it's Misuzu!!! complete with Ni-ha-ha!
Tomokazu Sugita as Yuuichi == different. Noticeably naturally deep low vocal. It took a bit to get used to, but he's kewl. He's using his Rin-vocal more instead of his Kyon-vocal, tho I know alot of people here won't be able to shake his Kyon-vocals.
fwiw, I think Daisuke Ono (Yukito of Air-tv) would've been a better new vocal for Yuuichi, but it's all good.
Can't wait for the full series. w00t!!! w00t!!!

Only two more weeks or so until the first episode airs - I can't wait /images/graemlins/happy.gif.

It's nice that they finally put up the character profile pages, but they feel a bit too basic. We need images, we need voice clips, we need the measurements of the girls, we need basically more in general. Still I guess I should be appreciative that the links say something besides "coming soon" now.

Just a wee update on a related issue of interest. Lia 's new album "dearly" (http://www.animate.co.jp/newrelease/newitem/av/av1101_03/av1101_03.html) which streets Nov. 1st will feature a duet version of "Last Regrets" sung with Ayana.
Alas, queens label releases (like Key Sounds) are classified by Amazon.jp as software rather than audio, and CD Japan doesn't carry them. /images/graemlins/anger200.gif /images/graemlins/relief1.gif

Only two places I've seen Key Sounds Label CDs listed that will ship to the US [darn you Amazon!] are Jungle and Himeya, but Queens Label only at Jungle. Unfortunately, Jungle seems to have become less regular in updating their Game music listing (though it does get updated at times, since they did add the I've Open the Birth Gate DVD to the listings)

Those are just raw scans though. /images/graemlins/happy.gif I like to clean them up and format them for correct wallpaper resolution. I also think it's important to get some decent color back into scans. I tweak the color manually in each individual channel to my preference and usually bump the saturation up. In fact I've whipped up a second one (http://spe.midco.net/tyrellgoetz/kanon02.jpg) in honor of the first episode being close to airing. I think this one turned out better than the first, though I regret that my lack of knowledge with adjustment layers and masks in Photohop (a.k.a. haven't learned them yet) means losing some of the finer detail in exchange for removing the rosetta from the scanner.
Same rule applies here, it's coming down in about 48 hours or so to avoid getting ugly emails from my ISP. If I may ask everybody, do you guys like these? I'll share them as I make them for a variety of shows if people are interested. I used to painstakingly remove the rosetta by hand but with my trusty Noise Ninja it's much faster now so I can turn scans into walls without too much time. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

well, all I can say and suggest to you is to ...
Wish and wish really really hard that the R2-dvd becomes available really really soon coz this ep-1 pushes up this remake on a whole ascended pedestal now.
Yup. This ep-1 was way way better than even the strongest hype.
If you'd seen the original anime, you'll adjust easily to this remake. Even with Kyon/Mayama being the new Yuuichi.
There were specific things and stuff from the original anime that were cut out and some of the plot-scenes were re-arranged a bit. That's as much as I'd like to say about it. Overall, the pacing and everything else were really well-done and well-executed.
If you haven't seen the original anime, you'll be treated to a great visual and audio feast. The backgrounds, the colors and the animation were superb and smooth. The female seiyuu-vocals were just heavenly to listen to.
One of the best feature for this remake that ep-1 established was the usage of the various music from the game-soundtrack.
btw, Nayuki's giggle-sway and Ayu's spin-move were just ridiculously cute! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
I really like to spoil it further, especially the significant differences between the original and this remake, but nahhh! I'll let somebody else do the spoiling. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Anyway ...
As usual, lots of lines taken directly from the game. Easy since it saves them from writing new dialogues. Pretty much brought out everybody before when they're 'supposed' to show up. And they took some liberty with rearranging some events. But that's good for a change of pace. I just want to see how they handle Yuuichi hanging around with all the girls and how differently it is done.

Yay that's definitely nice to see. Too bad there is text of EVIL in the way. Must be part of their evil plan to try to make us buy the DVDs. I wonder if this version will have a better chance of coming out in R1 land. I can only hope for the best that the situation is different enough.
Still the first episode was definitely worth the wait. Quite nice over all. All I know is if/when I get volume 6 of Kanon (Toei) R2 and have finally completed the series. A voice in my head is going to tell me I should dedicate myself to getting the Kanon (Kyo-Ani) R2 as well. Darn it, now I need to hope even more for an R1 version. Just so it's easier to consider.
Either way Ayu remains the divine one. Well it's not like the first episode of the new version of Kanon is going to suddenly change who my favorite girl is. Heck I doubt even the final episode will do that. I'm firmly locked in as a worshipper of Ayu. Although I do like the other girls.

For one thing you won't have to worry about the "comparison game" where they spend more time either whining the new version pales in comparison or preaching about its superiority. Whatever the case may be. Comparison in of itself is not bad, but when over done it makes it hard to enjoy what you're watching.
Plus there is less chance of the person accidentally spoiling everything for some viewers. Like saying "Ah yes so Joe just met Sara who is of course the Lord of Hades according to the game. Oh wait I forgot that wasn't revealed to later. Whoops". Yeah I made that up to be on the safe side if it was not obvious...
Still there are also advantages to having knowledge of earlier versions. So it can be good to view a variety of blogs. In hopes that while some will cater to one style that others will cater to the other. In my case I'm not too worried about Kanon spoilers. Although granted my experience with Kanon is mainly with the Toei anime. Never really played the game.

The spoiler problem is real and alive if you look at the comments other post though. Those blogs don't have a spoiler tag system and people feel free to post them. Case in point - the blog linked above has someone commenting about something in the OP. If you haven't seen the show before you don't really know what it is and so it's not really a spoiler - it can be anything. You can't say the same thing for someone who knows the story however.
As far as the little fanservice scene we got in the show, I kind of wish they hadn't. Kanon doesn't really need it, and it kind of ruins the mood.

I saw in the latest email from CD Japan that the first volume is already solicited for January. My only problem is that I have suddenly taken a serious financial hit and my have to cut back my R2 purchases almost completely. I am trying to find a way to salvage something.
The distributor (Pony Canyon?? I'm basing that on the product tag) may be making it easier, as according to the specs listed here (link to CDJapan listing (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=PCBX-50813)), it will be 3 episodes per volume (at least on disk one, hopefully on all disks) and that could reduce the disk count to 8 (if this is 24 episodes, yes?). I might be able to swing that. If it were another Shuffle (12 disks), I would probably have to pass.
I really, really, really would like this and AIR to get licensed in R1, but I guess that will depend on a lot of other factors.

Yeah it wasn't that bad - as you I just didn't like the possible trend it might indicate. Even though the PC version was H, the console one wasn't - and from what I recall didn't have that shot. Neither did the Toei anime, so to me it kind of came out of nowhere, and made me ask myself whether that was what Kyoani really see Kanon as.

Well, keeping in mind that I never saw the original, and I felt that Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrr was rather severely over rated, this wasn't bad. Not spectacular, but not bad either.
My thoughts:
Nayuki: Made of Stupid and cute
Ayu: Made of Stupider and cuter
Akiko: Made of MILF and Awesome
Kaori: Made of Ayako Kawasumi and AWESOME
Sayuri: Made of Yukari Tamura and Reserved.
Yuichi: Made of Kyon
something
10-06-2006, 11:21 PM
I thought it was a good first episode, hitting on all the classic scenes from the beginning that we all know and love from the original. I haven't seen the original in ages though, so I remember little of the show's details besides the beginning and endings. But it will come back to me as I watch.
The animation, of course, is absolutely fantastic, not that I would have expected anything less from KyoAni. The OP is great and upbeat, and while the ED is a tad boring, it's cute enough with Ayu running. It's great to know the VAs are back (except for Yuuichi's, which is fine because it's Kyon's VA, who I think is great and VERY approproate for this role), even if I can't remember what they sounded like originally.
Uguu~ is back in top form though, and that's the most important thing. Nayuki sounds REALLY mature, but also adequately retarded, which makes me love her oh so much. Ayu spinning while trying to see behind her made me so har--- er, happy. Yes, happy. Nayuki's mom is still hot. I can't wait to see all the other characters get properly introduced.
Basically, I am so psyched about this show. A true classic of the bishoujo genre recreated by hands down the greatest animation production studio on the planet with a keen eye for detail and stunning beauty. I fail to see how that can be anything other than a winning formula. Massive, enormous, gargantuan win.
And 26 eps! Oh god yes.

It's like any other show of its genre. Find (In theory) at least one of the girls appealing early on for whatever reason. Then later on as you learn more about the girls in general you'll grow to like them or well yes hate them.
In my case it's mainly because of Ayu. She's the one that convinced me to watch the series. Well the Toei version anyway. I like her personality, character design, the winged backpack, etc. Over all she's just cute and I found her character to be the more interesting one.
Also it's only the first episode and they have yet to properly introduce all of the main girls. So it's a bit early for the truly appealing stuff to come up. Heck I'll be honest as much as I like Ayu. If I were to judge her only based on episode 01. At most I can say is "She's cute and seems to be fun". Nothing more than that.

Exactly my feeling about the old series; unwatchable, for me, for that very reason. However, maybe it's just that the story itself was handled a bit more intelligently in this new first episode, but the girls didn't seem quite so offensively stupid as in the old version. At least, Nayuki seems to have upped her IQ into double figures this time, although unfortunately this may have been at Ayu's expense.

>_> You act like you've never seen a show like this before, or seen "cute but dumb" characters. At any rate, obviously we've seen and loved the original, where you haven't (how did that happen?), so we have a whole history of knowing these characters and what happens to them. They're great characters with great stories behind them and they're all obviously much deeper than "teens with kid mentalities" or only being "cute but dumb". You've only seen one episode. Keep watching and let the show illustrate the appeal TO YOU. If you don't like them by the end, then fine, but What sort of answer do you expect from us without spoiling?

I think you just need to stop worrying about what other people like and just stick with your personal preferences. People all have different tastes and there's just no way that everyone will like series that other people are in to. Call me crazy, but I personally think that just the character development in Kanon blows Gundam SEED Destiny out of the water. By a lot. Ok, by infinite. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

OK, finally caught ep 1 and I have to say the animation is absolutly beautiful, as expected. I find it nice that the town seems to mostly remain the same, the train station, the school and the shopping district, I thought they might change them. Ayu is the cutest ever, in the shop explaining and that part with the wings was anime gold.
I do hope they don't spoil the story with those flashbacks though. I don't remeber them from the other version, and because of that I was really shocked to find out the truth at the end, I never figured it out untill then. I'm just afraid that if they give too much away that people are going to figure it out too quickly.

However, maybe it's just that the story itself was handled a bit more intelligently in this new first episode, but the girls didn't seem quite so offensively stupid as in the old version. At least, Nayuki seems to have upped her IQ into double figures this time, although unfortunately this may have been at Ayu's expense.

Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that Nayuki doesn't seem like a 7-year-old anymore... although, while Ayu's spinning was cute... yeah, that was weird. Although she's a heck of a lot less groan-worthy than Air's "heroine" was. Uguu >>>> Gao. Now and forever.
Also, did anyone who saw the original find it strange to see <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Kaori talking to Shiori? Doesn't that pretty much go against everything her character is up to a certain point?</span>

Huh? Where did you see that? That didn't happen in ep-1 of Kanon-2k6.

I haven't watched it yet, but damn, Ayu could be Mikuru's younger sister. ~Uguu

I do hope they don't spoil the story with those flashbacks though. I don't remeber them from the other version, and because of that I was really shocked to find out the truth at the end, I never figured it out untill then. I'm just afraid that if they give too much away that people are going to figure it out too quickly.

I wonder if they're making a lot of decisions about things like that by giong under the assumption that everyone knows the story already, if not from the games then from the first anime.

Yeah, he's pretty ignorant about everything until very late in the story. The only 'flashbacks' should be the monologues by Ayu, so all those blanking out while talking to people make him seem like a little crazy.

This is one of those shows that I'll watch all the way to the end, even if I don't like the story or characters. Simply because KyoAni's artwork and animation are currently unrivaled in the industry.
Go! KyoAni Go! And make sure you do another Haruhi season when you finish Kanon! ^^ We'll also take more FMP.

Meaningless, but I decided to check out the first episode of this due to all the hype around the net. Very nice animation, even for a harem (assuming it is). I'll check out a few more episodes before I decide if I like it. I do so far, I'll say that. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
