Which is the best of the 2 titles above? I know 'Spirit has a fan following here, but what little I've seen of 'Joe so far is quite addictive.

Are there any anime titles about Sumo Wrestling or Thai boxing?

Good luck finding more than 2 people who've seen Ashita no Joe. Not only is it unlicensed but nobody has taken much an interest in it via *other* means.

Depends on what kind of story and characters you like. Briefly,..
<ul type="square"> Hajime no Ippo has an addictive mix of action, comedy and drama with endearing characters and an inspiring positive story. The series also gives the viewer stories of Ippo's opponents before each fight.

Ashita no Joe is drama and action populated by characters that are roguish, driven, flawed, desperate, and a whole lot of other warts, wrapped in a bleak hard-luck story that is told in a genearally gritty fashion.[/list]
Between the two, my personal preference is Ashita no Joe over that of Hajime no Ippo. Mainly because it's the kind of story and characters that I love but that does not mean that I did not enjoy Hajime no Ippo (which I do enjoy immensely and also wholeheartedly recommend). Partly because it's one of the first few anime series that really made a deep impression on me when I watched it while I was young.

p.s.
I'm most likely one of the 2 here who <font color="RoyalBlue">Texhnolyze</font> is referring to /images/graemlins/tongue.gif /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Man, it's so hard to compare the two since they're both excellent shows. Ashita no Joe is probably the better one, but it takes a bit more to get into since the main character is basically a jerk for a good portion of the beginning. He, and everyone else, changes dramatically as the story progresses and the major moments of the series are some of the greatest moments in all of anime ever. In fact, the major scenes of Ashita no Joe have become synonymous with anime as a whole.

Take this (http://www.anime-games.co.uk/pages/a/ashita_joe/title/ashita.jpg) scene from the show which is probably the single most well known image in anime to the Japanese.

On the other hand, Hajime no Ippo has a character who's more likable, certainly in the beginning. He comes from a better background than Joe, how spends a portion of his time in prison. But that doesn't make him any less of a great character.

Hmm, you see the problem here?

I'd suggest going with Ashita no Joe if you can find it, otherwise you'll be no worse off with Hajime no Ippo, both are excellent shows.

I must be the other one.

Anyway which one I prefer depends on the mood I'm in. Hajime no Ippo is more of a "feel good" animation for me. Joe is more of a action drama "I want to kick some butt" animation.

I'll throw in another image screencaptured from the DVD - Joe's entrance into the ring for his officially sanctioned fight against his great rival, Riikishi Tohru -&gt; Image link (http://img219.imageshack.us/my.php?image=anjjoeyabuki729el.jpg). What happens during and after the fight becomes bona fide anime legend.

I would pick Ippo mainly because I found it easier to get into, though I really enjoyed both.

Only seen FS but it's very good I've been keeping up with the R1 release and it hasn't lost it quality even as it goes beyond the 2/3 mark.

I dunno about Ashita no Joe, but Ippo definitely has some "kick butt" moments of its own. I don't know how any fan of shounen can watch the opening of the Ippo OVA (or is it movie?) and not feel pumped up by it.

Ippo does have kick butt moments, but it's a really different feel to Joe. I'm not sure how to describe it, but the people in Ippo were much kinder in general. Mashiba is the only one I can think of that I was wishing Ippo would beat the crap out of. The rest of the guys I loved to watch the fights, but I would have been happy wether Ippo won or lost the fight... well, Hayami was also another I didn't want to win. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

With Joe every day seemed like a struggle. Beaten on time and time again. Not just the bullies that Ippo had to deal with, but everyone. I guess the best thing to compare it to is imagine a whole series that played out like Mashiba's life mixed with the time that Miyata spent training in Thailand and it's something like that.

Hmm.. that's a pretty cool way of describing it. I'd love to see the series, but as I said nobody has taken much an interest in "translating" and buying the R2's would be a waste of money for me. I don't feel I could get the most out of it if I can't follow along.

If this series ever gets licensed then I will believe anime hell has truly frozen over.

While browsing JSDVD I came across a 10-episode OVA called Notari Matsutarou (http://mall.jsdvd.com/product_info.php?cPath=104_122&amp;products_id=7953). Don't think I've ever seen any other ones.

Forgot that. A treat for Asuka (Eva) fans too, as Yuko Miyamura is Ayane's seiyuu. /images/graemlins/knowital.gif Now if only Yawara could get licensed...

(I've got Wannabes, an old CPM VHS/LD release about female wrestlers, &amp; One Pound Gospel the Takahashi story about a boxer &amp; a nun.)

What I saw of Ashita no Joe had desperation &amp; tragedy in it, &amp; it was that which made it seem a mature kind of title. I'd like to try Ippo, what is a good volume combination to start with?

I started with volume 1, and that got me geared up for volume 2. Having not seen past there, I'd say it gets you into the story pretty quickly with a good blend of humor and drama. I didn't believe it when people were saying that starting Ippo was like starting an addiction, but I've been proven wrong. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif Volume 3 can't come fast enough.

Ah Harima-nada (http://www.public.iastate.edu/~rllew/harima.html) is an anime about sumo wrestling. There's also a sumo wrestling manga called Hakkeyoi, by the same creator of Ironfist Chinmi.

Some other boxing anime are Ganbare Genki (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1693) and Ring ni Kakero (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4420). They're not Thai boxing though.

Never seen Ashita no Joe.

If you want to know about Fighting Spirit, a good comparison would be the Rocky movies. Except instead of ~30 year old Rocky Balboa, you get high school student Ippo Makunouchi (I probably maimed his family name). Also since it's an anime TV series vs a bunch of movies, there's a lot more development. You see Ippo straight when he gets into boxing and it goes from there. In Rocky, Rocky already knows how to box.

Start with volume 1 and work your way through it. It's a very addictive show that will make you want more. The good thing, however, is that Geneon deciding to do 5 episodes per volume doesn't really put you in the middle of a particular match (a lot of matches end up being about 2-3 episodes). I've watched all 10 volumes released so far and am looking forward to the release of volume 11.
