A new Rose of Versailles movie has been announced and as a fan of the original series, it makes me oh so happy! However I don't see what they could possibly do with the story since it feels very conclusive, I'm thinking it will probably be a retelling of some sort....
Anyway here's a promotional image :

Extended cycle theory. This movie obviously takes place after Utena.

I'd say so too based on the picture, or maybe is it more of a reference to Aphrodite from Saint Seiya?

Wow. That must be the longest gap ever between TV series and movie /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Maybe this could spur some US company to license both the new movie and the TV series?? :hopes:

And the old movie. The live-action one. From 1980. This one. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077827/)
/images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif Hey, we got Lupin the 3rd: Strange Psychokinetic Strategy, so anything's possible.

OMG !!! that's too good to be true !! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
I think it will be a sequal, semi-sequal/semi-remake, or a side story not a remake ! since squeezing the whole story into a movie would ruin the story IMO.
Any info about the seiyuu ? i surly love it if Reiko Tajima reprised her role as Oscar /images/graemlins/happy.gif

The supreme irony of that movie is that it's actually filmed in English, but has never been released in any English-speaking country. *sigh*

I really hope for this to be a success where an american company would bring the series.

Awesome news, now if I can only finish the series. >_<
Hopefully Shingo Araki can do the character designs again.

CURSES!! >:O
Shingo Araki is one of the most under-recognized masters in the industry. A part of me dies everytime I hear someone say of RoV or Oniisama E, "the animation and character designs are dated, but look past that at..." when attempting to praise the show.

Indeed. And he would do a wonderful job now. Watch the Saint Seiya movie, Tenkai Hen, and you'll see one of the most beautiful anime to have been released in the last few years.
Araki's art style is godly, and I love his attention to detail, especially some facial details, like the nose and eyes.

Well that just sucks. Really sucks. I just can't imagine Rose of Versailles anime without Shingo Araki. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif
And it seems like none of the original cast members are coming back.

Are you serious?! Shingo Araki's work on Cutie Honey, Majokko Megu, and ROV are simply beautiful. Not to mention I always thought ROV was well animated.
Funny how nobody seems to remember Shingo Araki for his character designs on Space Adventure Cobra. I always thought it was amusing that the ultimate shoujo drama and the ultimate sci-fi seinen harem looked the same. ^_^

(All about RoV, I haven't seen the others.)
The animation may well be great, by the standards of the time, but it is definitely well below modern standards. There are lots of scenes with no movement (panning, etc.) that would have some (limited) movement even in a cheap TV series today (and would have even in the 90s before digital animation took off).
Similarly, I'm certainly one of those who would have to look past the character designs. They're not bad, but just a touch... well, you know, the faintest hint of an ugly stick may have been involved at some point in their upbringing. /images/graemlins/happy.gif It's definitely an old-fashioned look.
(For those who haven't seen the characters, I was googling to refresh my memory and came across this page of screencaps (http://www.its.caltech.edu/~atiya/RoV/RoV.html) so you can check them. I'm not saying they are bad, but the style is less cute and pretty than we're used to nowadays.)
On the other hand the art direction and visual design is really outstanding (and you can see where large chunks of Utena came from).
I watched the whole series on R2 DVD and it's good but you certainly have to make allowances for its age. The dramatic parts of the story, too, are more straightforward than you'd expect from a 90s series.

I'm working on getting to the Tenkai Hen movie; I just started ADV's release of the TV series. I have to say, Saint Seiya is one of the coolest shows I've ever seen. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
Rando, I know exactly what you mean. The only response I can come up with people say that kinda thing is, likewise, "ARE YOU SERIOUS?!" The design in Cutie Honey are a favorite that I neglected to mention.
Further proof of Araki's mastery: Who else could take designs as detailed and complex as those of the FIST OF THE NORTH STAR manga, and turn it into an essentialized animat-able form that still looks so good? ;_;
Quen, I don't really know what to say. It is a matter of taste, but I won't be so wishy washy as to nullify any argument either one of us might have by saying something lame like "Oh well, it's all subjective!". Obviously, we both feel as if we're objectively correct here, but as of yet, I don't have any way to measure this scientifically. At any rate, the design work of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, Shingo Araki, Haruhiko Mikimoto, Tomonori Kogawa, Hagio Moto, &c.... to me, they are about 5000x as dynami and powerful as the designs we see today, which are almost invariably generic, uninspired, pseudo-naturalist trash, even if I love the show they're in. For instance, I LOVE, absolutely LOVE, Stand Alone Complex, but I would be forced to say that visually, Rose of Versailles is superior in every way. I'm not sure this is something we can argue about really, because I don't know what grounds to do it on, besides a discussion of Aesthetic Philosophy. (There's also the matter that I don't really like arguing in the first place.)

I agree with you oh so completely. The only shows that look similar to ROV are two with equally amazing designs and they are Utena and Saint Seiya.
It's a shame character designs are not more experimental nowadays. Gankutsuou is a good example of something experimental but the beauty of the character design (bar the textural visual effect) is nothing when compared with ROV!

Akio, thanks for the kind words. Have you seen Oniisama E (Brother, Dear Brother)? If not, try and do so soon! It looks "similar" to ROV, in that they're both originally by Riyoko Ikeda, and have Michi Himeno and Shingo Araki translating the character designs to animation!
http://www.members.tripod.com/~aoisora/oe_image_gallery.htm <-- this link contains images from show. Be careful about wandering past the first page though, as I didn't check the latter pages for spoilers.

Not having any of the original seiyuu back is not cool, but not having Shingo Araki back for the character designs sucks big time /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif
Araki's design is what 1st interduced me to anime when i watched UFO Robo Grendizer when i was a kid and grew up watching other works later...the last one i watched was Danguard Ace and soon Saint Seiya (only watched few eps). Btw, is he doing the character design for the Saint Seiya Inferno Chapter ? i hope they didn't replace him too /images/graemlins/relief1.gif

Well, hopefully this new character designer will atleast TRY to capture the look of the original series. ROV just won't be the same without the huge detailed eyes, or the overdramatic direction. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif
Yeah, he and Himeno do SS Hades Inferno character designs.

I hope that Osamu Desaki will be directing this one, since he directed Eps 19 to the end of the series after the original director Tadao Nagahama passed away.

Given that the Clannad movie website (both Toei products) was only just announced and it was announced prior to the RoV movie, it's not that suprising there's little info yet. ANN has the major cast listing and IIRC some crew up.
