Hey Folks,

Okay so it's been 10 years that I've really been into Anime. I'm looking to get back into Anime on a regular basis. I was wondering what you people would recommend based on my tastes. The Animes I currently own include, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, 8man after OVA, Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell 2, Ninja Scrolls, Appleseed, All the Initial D's, Fist of the North Star, Final Fantasy: Advent Children, Abenobashi Magical Shopping Arcade, and Gilgamesh. That about covers it. So any recommendations you have that are similiar to these movies would be great, thanks.

If you liked the GITS movies, then I say go for the tv series (Standalone Complex and SAC 2nd GiG). Some of the other top-tiered titles that you might enjoy are Mai-HiME and Eureka Seven.

Judging from your list, here are some titles I think you might enjoy:

Berserk
Full Metal Alchemist
Excel Saga
FLCL
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell Second Gig (TV series of Ghost in the Shell, if you haven't seen them yet, which I am guessing from what you are saying with your list.)
Serial Experiments Lain
Key the Metal Idol

In a Dungeon-style online multiplayer futuristic virtual video game, some characters encounter another player who claims he can no longer leave the game. Meanwhile, The World starts displaying weird, unprogrammed behaviors causing all sorts of problems for players and administrators. Great music along the way. The series piles up mysteries as the players battle monsters and other players in order try and help their friend out but the main mystery never gets adequately explained in the end leaving some to believe the series was just a mercenary attempt to push people to buy into the next couple of series and video games in the franchise. While its not uninteresting and I did enjoy it to an extent, the hyper-commercial nature of the franchise as well as the weak ending has tarnished my opinion of the series quite a bit over time. I will, however, give it a provisional recommendation for fans of online multiplayer Dungeon video games.

It isn't a series I can reconmend to you, based on the list of series you've provided. It is definitely geared twoards a MMO gamer croud and tends to be very philisophical at times. There is little action and the story plays out as a mystery, which in the end leads into the video games. I never went beyond the anime, it was definitely a different series, but not something with high replay value.

I think you'd like 'Vampire Hunter D : Bloodlust', 'Full Metal Panic' and 'Samurai Champloo'...

Peace.

You could also throw in 3x3 eyes, although it is only 6 episodes long. There is also spriggan for action as you can't really argue about the price.

Did you actually like Magical Shopping Arcade or do you just own it? A lot of people dislike the series due to certain parts. I mean for paradoies and zaniness I'd call out Nadesico and Rune Soldier for a good laugh.

Apart from the ones already mentioned, if it's really 10 years it seems you missed a few real classics. There are scores of anime you should probably try and some I may like more than the ones I'm recommending here, but first things first:

Cowboy Bebop The starting point of Studio Bones this jazzy SF series featuring both humor and drama is still a landmark in anime. Bones had made some really good series after Bebop, but it all starts here.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - The (re)birth of the angsty teenage conspiracy mecha. There are series in this genre I like more, but this is what you have to see to understand where they are all coming from. Including the highly controversial ending /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Revolutionary Girl Utena - Your list doesn't contain any shoujo. Maybe you hate the pink frilly stuff. Well, this pink frilly stuff has some really dark backbone to it, and utter weirdness. Duelling, magic castles, and some twisted psychology. I've seen this series mentioned often as an exception by people who generally don't care for shoujo.

Shinkai Collection - Shinkai is a great new director on the anime seen. His breakthrough work, Voice of a distant Star is now packaged together with his followup The Place Promised in our Early Days

Satoshi Kon is one of the directors that has been making truly great anime recently: the movies Tokyo Godfathers, Milennium Actress and the TV series Paranoia Agent.

And I second the earlier recommendations of Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex. Great quality TV series.

OK, this one is not yet a classic, as it's currently being released. But I'm thoroughly convinced it will be hailed as a classic in years to come, because of the breakthrough visuals and great characterization: Gankutsuou.

From that list, I'm assuming you really like action or serious anime with good storylines. You NEED the following:

Berserk -- Probably my favorite anime of all time. One of the best storylines ever and an excellent cast of characters.

Fullmetal Alchemist -- It starts off seeming like a standard action show... but it's really not. This show is also a personal favorite because of how well absolutely everything is done. The show really gets nothing wrong and it only continues to improve.

Gungrave -- It's like Berserk in a lot of ways but with a mafia setting.

Evangelion -- It's a mech anime, but it's surprisingly deep and in a lot of cases, disturbing. Definitely check it out and be sure to get Evangelion Platinum as opposed to the regular release.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex -- It's the Ghost in the Shell TV series. It's great.

I'm not sure if these next ones are exactly what you'd want, but you should probably at least look into them really quick:

Rurouni Kenshin -- Samurai anime that's really good. The 2nd arc in particular is phenomenal and the OVA is one of the best things ever produced.

Full Metal Panic -- Another mech anime. This one goes back and forth between being serious and being comedic and it actually does a really good job. Very entertaining.

hm.. based on what you have already then i'd recommend:
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex seasons 1 & 2
Hellsing
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Blood (movie)
FLCL
eX-Driver OVA and movie (since you like Initial D)
Rurouni Kenshin
all the Miyazaki movies (Porco Rosso, Totoro, Nausicaa, Spirited Away, Mononoke Hime, Kiki's Delivery Service, Pom Poko)
Noir
Rune Soldier Louie (hilarious fantasy series)

yes I like Magical Shopping Arcade, funny thing is I haven't finished watching it on over 2 years. I always get to the last 2 episodes and can't ever get around to finish watching it. I will one day I'm sure. I want to thank you folks for all the recommendations. I'm going to check out as many as possible as time allows. I've actually tried to watch Evangelion, great story, great action, I just really can't get into the animation of the Angels. If anyone else has any other recommendations that'd be great.

Thanks for recommending Gantz. I bought the complete first season. I've watch up to episode 8 and so far, it's great. I like the twists of the story and the action. I'll probably continue to watch Gantz as long as they make new episodes. I also picked up a few other Animes, but haven't had time to watch them yet. I bought Desert Punk, GITS:SAC, New Fist of the North Star, and a few others. If there's any other recommendations out there please feel free to let me know, thanks.

I believe they stopped making new episodes of Gantz at 26 and that will probally be the last.

Well, for comedy mixed with action, consider giving Hyper Police, Full Metal Panic and maybe Nadesico a try.

I say Karas and Gungrave, both seem to be right up your alley.

Karas has that feeling of Ninja Scroll (the style of action scenes) and the Guyver OVAs (masked hero and cool villians). This show seems to be right up your alley when it comes to what got you into anime. The first volume of the series, which has 3 OAVs out of the 6 made (the second volume hasn't been given a released date) is going to be released on the 25th of April. Pre-order it and you won't be sorry.

Gungrave is one of the most emotional animes that also has excellent drama as well as action. The characters' history and development throughtout the course of the series is among the best I seen. The dub is among the best too.

Get them and you will thank me later /images/graemlins/happy.gif

You're very welcome. The story continues on with volume 7 (you can get vol. 7 + artbox to hold the rest) and ends with volume 10. The series ends there, and I was pretty satisfied with the ending myself. If you enjoyed the first season, the second half should have to on edge of your seat.

Are you kidding me only 10 volumes? That's kind of upsetting, Gantz is an excellent story, with plenty of action. Why do they always have to cut the really addicting shows so short?

Also started watching Full Metal Panic, pretty good action so far, but the comedy in the series is pretty damn good. Especially, the scene on the balcani with the panties, LOL! That had me laughing for about 5 minutes solid. I think I'm going to need some more cd holders just for my anime collection.

Twenty six episodes isn't really all that short for anime. "Leave the audience always wanting more."
