Much like in the previous threads (which can be found here (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1292121&page=0&view=colla psed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1), here (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1298034&page=1&view=colla psed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1), here (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1312452&page=0&view=colla psed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1&PHPSESSID=)and here (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=1&Number=1303170&page=0&view=coll apsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)):
As I've been watching and enjoying more animes, I've noticed that there are quite a few characters be they main or secondary who either go unnoticed or underappreciated within the fandom.
I thought I would create a thread that would redeem that as we could discuss why we like/dislike a certain character and why we think they go unnoticed/underappreciated...
I will focus on one series per week and pick a different character from the series each day. They will have their own colour so please answer in the same colour to make things easier. If you feel I've missed someone who deserves a mention PM me.
Here they are:
<font color="brown">Soun</font>
<font color="orange">Mousse </font>
<font color="purple">Sasuke </font>
<font color="pink">Akane </font>
<font color="green">Tatewaki Kuno</font>
<font color="grey">Dr.Tofu </font>
Special Request - <font color="blue">Ukyo </font>
<font color="red">Kodashi </font>
Please post your opinions in the same colour as the one attributed to the character so it's easy to follow when more characters are added to the list.

First let me state I'm color blind. I will still comment on Soun though. He's cool. I prefer Genma to Soun, actually I dunno neither is good without the other, while the episode where they have a little feud has it's comedy, I much prefer their ganging up on Happosai, that shit's hilarious.

No takers on the original Ahiru-chan? Surprising yet not totally unexpected. Time for character no.3 and it is:
<font color="purple">Sasuke </font>

Still no takers on the Ranma characters..? That's strange as they invite discussions. Here's one more for the pack anyway:
<font color="green">Tatewaki Kuno</font>

Um, these last three make me laugh in different ways? Sasuke's loyalty and patheticness are good for a chuckle, as are Akane's ego and temper, where Ranma are concerned. I still wish that she wasn't so dense about P-chan, and a little sweeter, but then the story wouldn't be what it is.
Kuno is really funny to me. So old-fashioned and shouen, so confusing to just about everyone around him.
Edit: Soun's look/character design is the most interesting thing about him.

I quite agree with you about these.
<font color="pink">Akane is definitely one of the most annoying and stupid characters in the show but her interaction with Ranma and family are always entertaining. Too bad the anime relies on static character development and the one thing we got for her was that her hair got cut. She probably should have been more interesting as the "lead" main love interest.</font>
<font color="green">When I first saw Ranma, Kuno was one of my favourite characters as he was the prettiest boy (yes, I was a superficial kid /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif ). Nowadays, I just find him immensely amusing even though he suffers from the one-dimensional nature that plagues most of the series' characters with his love for both Akane and the pig-tailed girl. One thing I'll say for him is that he never gets as tedious as Happosai with his repetitiveness. </font>
<font color="purple">Sasuke is an interesting character for the reasons you pointed out and also because he is one of the rare ones who gets some depth as the series progresses. I remember an episode that dealt with his loyalty to Kuno very successfully and made me actually like him. </font>
<font color="brown">Soun as you said can be boring but he was really funny in the second movie when he was just crying as two of his daughters got kidnapped /images/graemlins/happy.gif. A lot more could be done with the character but he works fine as a one-dimensional guy.</font>
<font color="orange">Mousse always makes me laugh because of his inability to recognise people, although that joke can become a little tedious. Like Kuno he also displays all the Ranma antagonist cliches but he pulls them off really well. Especially in the episode he joins forces with Ryoga. I also like his glasses and love his direct descendant with them: Umino-kun of Sailor Moon</font>

Character no.6 is:
<font color="grey">Dr.Tofu </font>
And we have an extra character up for discussion by popular demand. It is:
<font color="blue">Ukyo </font>

<font color="blue">Ukyo
The best choice Ranma could make would be to choose Ukyo as his bride.
She is cute, can fight, can cook & has a nice temperament. The thinking man's choice - of course that might not be what he wants as Akane would keep him alert more.
Ukyo is one reason to keep watching after season 2, and to get the OVAs.

<font color="pink">I'm beginning to wonder if I'm I'm the only Akane fan in here. Yeah, she hits Ranma, but Ranma can take it, and he can be really rude at times. She tends to be kind toward people who haven't given her a reason to dislike them, and I thought she was cute. I love her relationship with Ranma as well.</font>
<font color="orange"> Kuno is one of my favorite comedic characters of all time. His complete detachment from reality is hilarious. He seems to think his life is a samurai movie where he is the star--all men live in mortal fear of him and all women are secretly in love with him. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif</font>

Last character time and this one is my all-time favourite Ranma character. She's got everything: a killer body, a killer attitude, killer moves and she's a psycho! All hail:
<font color="red">Kodashi </font>

<font color="pink">I liked her before her hair got cut. Oooooh, I'm so shallow! Actually she seems like one of the more complex characters in the show...</font> but...
I think the problem with the Ranma discussion is that most of the character are pretty much two-dimensional ciphers for comic effect. They seem to have one overriding character trait, plus their individual fighting style. There isn't a whole lot more. This works all right for Ranma; it's an entertaining enough show... but I don't think it leaves people with many insights to make about the characters.

At least, without invoking parallels to other shows. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Exhibit B. (http://www.larself.com/revolution/makeahabitofit2.jpg)
These two screencaps are from the first episode of Chou Kuseninarisou, one of those rare fighting romance school comedies about a transgendered redhead.
I'll leave it to someone else to decide what exactly I'm suggesting here.

I have to agree with Shimauma - Akane was that much more interesting with longer hair. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Tofu is simply a scream. My favorite scenes with him almost always involve that skeleton model in his office. I wonder if he will ever hook with the eldest Tendo girl? *Has only seen the first three sets of this show*
Ukyo is hot, but ultimately a push-over, it seems to me. Other than that, she immediately became my favorite character in the show. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Kodachi's romantic entreaties to Ranma through her baking are fun, but that laugh...waugh. Few ojousama characters out there can match it! I still find it amazing and hilarious that the lady who dubbed her voice in English also plays the doctor on Stargate SG-1.
