View Full Version : Hunting for Maverick Releases...

Due to always loveable paranoia, my latest anime goal is to snap up as much as, if not all, of the "marverick anime" as I can before they vanish totally. By Maverick, I mean stuff released by...non-standard companies...in R1.
For example, so far I've only mangaged to pick up Hyper Police. Here are the only other ones so far that come to MY mind...so I'm hoping everyone can help me fill in any blanks that may exist.
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
That Space Battleship Yamato Movie Set
Salaryman Kintaro (Is this done yet?)
Legend of the Condor Hero
Puppet Master

Salaryman Kintaros fifth and final disc was released on Tuesday of this week 3/28/06

What exactly is the line for non-standard? If you mean companies with very few releases, you could go for stuff by AN (Risky/Safety, Miamy Guns, Hare+Guu), Synch-Point (FLCL) and Urban Vision (Ninja Scroll TV). By now Tokyopop is nearly qualifying, since they are very convincing in appearing to leave the anime market. And what's the last time Animeigo took up anything new... Anyway, which of these are non-standard in your opinion?

So far, and I know this isn't an ideal way to look at things, my definition of "non-standard" has been any R1 company that never seems to have a TRSI studio sale. I live and die anime wise via the discounts that TRSI offers when it comes to sales of one sort or another...so being able to realy on Funi or ADV sales helps me to prioritize when it comes to picking their stuff up....usually. I operate on a regrettably small anime budget (somewhere between 0-$50 a week), so finding stuff on discount or stuff I feel likely to go OOP or outright vanish is paramount to me.
I still need to get Eatman 98 from Robert's Anime Corner sotre soon as well since TRSI doesn't carry it.
Hey, there's another good segway question, what series does TRSI no longer carry for whatever reason or another?

In that case, check the studio directory for titles released by AN, Synch-Point, Urban Vision. You might as well check Sony, Columbia Tristar and Disney. Even better, just have a look at any studio that seems very unfamiliar.
I don't have a complete list of series that are now OOP of going OOP, but the ones I remember are Gasaraki, Bastard! and Sailor Moon box sets. I'm sure there will be more.

Thanks for the strategy tip. I'll check out stuff as I come across it...but I know for sure the ones I listed earlier are on top priority for now...especially that Yamato Movie set....every day I hope it shows up on a daily..and every day I get let down /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I just recently spent a month or two picking up all the anime I wanted that had gone out of print and were becoming hard to find. City Hunter, Sailor Moon, Slayers (though Funi might be re-releasing it), Saint Tail, Lost Universe.
I'll post more if I think of them.

Might want to look for "They Were Eleven". It is unlikely to be re-released, even though it is an excellent character driven space opera.

Already picked up They Were 11 awhile back. Hyper Police came in the mail and the Yamato Movie set should be here by the end of the week.
I'm kicking myself a bit on Eatman 98 though....Robert's is only listing the VHS release of it now it seems /images/graemlins/depresse.gif

Wind of Hermes (Image), if you can find it.
Heh, Millennium Actress & GiTS:Innocence would almost qualify.
Not sure about Soar! Isami (Hirameki)

TRSI has Hermes...I just happened to notice it while ordering Hyper Police on sheer luck.
I'll check towards the others...though I dont' know if Milennium would be my kinda show (like GiTS) All of it falls into "everything I find interesting...but not everything period".
Problem with that attitude is I have broad tastes. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif
Edit: Whee...just got Hermes.
