Deciding whether to buy now or wait for a studio sale can leave one in a quandary, so here's a non-anime recommendation. If you are unfamiliar with interactive novels and aren't put off by adult themes, take advantage of the discount. Here are some titles considered more story than sex-oriented by bgame fans.<ul type="square"> Crescendo - high school drama with immersive plot and character development
Kana - Little Sister - compelling life/death story, focused on characters
Tokimeki Check-in! - fun multipath game with ryokan setting
Snow Drop - another ryokan game with beautiful graphics and music; based on the Yuki-Onna legend
Ever 17 - non-hentai scifi/mystery game
Hourglass of Summer - non-hentai game with time travel theme[/list]

Best strategy for these is to get the absolute cheapest of the cheapest you can find. That way the percentage based discounts vs studio sales don't wind up doing any regrettable needless damage to one's wallet or purse... /images/graemlins/knowital.gif

No, with sales the discounts multiply rather than add; what you get is:
msrp
x .9 (standard 10% TRSI discount for dvds)
x .8 (the 20% for the instock sale)
x .9 (10% off for GA discount)
=
msrp * 0.648 or approximately 35% off.
Note that TRSI's standard discount varies depending on what you buy; for example, cds and t-shirts aren't normally discounted at all, so at best you'll just get 28% off, while with some manga (from Dark Horse and TokyoPop, for example) that have standard discount of 25%, you'll wind up at 46% off.

ON box Sets, 35% off a box set is pretty good in my opinion. I think I am going for the Raxepheon Box Set during this sale. ADV doesn't put the box sets on the Right Stuf sales. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

While not all that great for DVD's, its pretty good for other things. Like Manga or OST's and stuff. Or fairly hard to find things. Bags and merchandise. TRSI often has some hard to find DVD's as well or DVD's that usually have a high markup like the Ghibli films.
Used to be decent for Geneon titles as well, but you can find those with a slightly higher discount online these days as well. But still, not bad for Geneon.
Unfortunately I've had a number of non anime purchases recently and with me eyeing the KOR collection deal, I doubt I'll really be able to take advantage of the sale. Maybe pick up a few OST's and JPop CD's...

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure the only restriction ever placed on an ADV sale was that they had to be instock, or released by a certain date. I dont recall a no-boxset restriction. I also dont really look at the boxsets as I prefer the singles. Of course, the last ADV sale was something like a year ago, so the recent boxset collections hadnt been released yet, so they werent part of the sale.
Geneon's sale discount is typically 33% at TRSI, which means its something like 38% with a GA discount. Most other studio sales are 40% off plus GA. In any event, with how cheap the boxsets are a few percentage points doesnt mean much. A few dollars perhaps.

IIRC, I believe the last ADV sale had a release date restriction, in affect excluding all the thinpak collections that were released at the time. As usual on AOD, there was a lot of endless whining then. But I believe older boxsets, such as the Excel Saga collection, were on sale.

so far the only studio that has a 33% discount sale is geneon right? adv, bandai, media-blasters, and all the others still have 40% off if i am not mistaken. thanks for the help guys.

Even though I will likely be unable to do this myself, (blasted lack of funds!) I recommend using this sale to hopefully take advantage of in-stock shows that will likely NOT have a studio sale. For example, Salaryman Kintaro and Jojo's Bizarre Adventures would be excellent candidates to get if they happen to be in-stock since the companies that put them out don't fall into the "major players" group.

Following up that suggestion, I see where Snow Drop has appeared in the Weekly Special bin for $14.99. That's less than half the price I've seen it advertised for previously. It's worth many more hours of enjoyment than a comparably priced anime.
