View Full Version : Jyu Oh Sei
I realize there was probably a thread made about this show before it aired, but I did a couple searches and couldn't find it. So I figured that I would make a thread about it here, since it seems to be a interesting show.
The opening reminded me heavily of Trigun, where Vash and Kinves are kids on a space ship. This series seems like a cross between Trigun and Ryvius to me.
What, that thread already disappeared? Awww... Anyways I really liked the first episode. It follows the manga closely but shortens some scenes and, judging from the ending scene in episode one, puts some events a bit differently. The animations looks good, and I was happy to see the forest and the plants animated really well, since its one of the main points of the story. I look forward to episode one, since two of my favourite characters showed up at the end of this episode.
Looks like Bones will do a good job on this one. I was worried that it would be too much of a side project to Ouran. But if this is handled right, it might actually be a real treat for the Sci-Fi fans. The animation is modern but it has a hint/taste of older science fiction manga in the story that should shine through.
Ah, like I mentioned, I couldn't find the other thread(if there was one). So sorry if it's a duplicate. I'm usually not drawn into shows of this nature, but everything clicked for me in the first episode. It seemingly has a good story, a bit of mystery, and nice animation.

Well, I thought I was not going to like this series, but the setting sound interesting. It is a complete different setting from most anime. The idea of the women choosing the husbands is pretty interesting. Lucky Thor gets chosen to be her husband by Teizu, the princess of the sun ring. Because of his heroics against the men of the ocle ring in episode 1. Of course Thor being the rebel he is, doesn't agree with being "chosen" and rebels against the system. At the end, Teizu resigns her title of princess and decides to stay at the town of the ocle ring to win Thor's heart. Young love!
Yeh, I'm really likeing this show. Episode 2 was interesting, and I like the fact that we have a "independent" female character, rather than one that would spend all day sulking in her room.

Yeah, the girls and women in this comic is one of the reasons I liked the manga so much. I love how the ending animaton gives some spotlight to Tiz (not sure if this is a spoiler but just in case) pictured standing on the earth since she really wants to go there . By the way, Tiz is not really a princess, since "Third" is more of a ranking term. As you could see in this episode, one advances in rank by challenging the man/woman above in rank to a duel.
Unfortunately, I screwed up when programming my video recorder and missed the first 10 minutes of ep 2. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif Anyways, I was so happy to see that the animation quality stays good, unlike most of the shows I follow this season where it dropped quite a bit.
My favourite "thing" in the manga is the mysterious Musa forest, and the scene where they start growing is one of my favourite scenes in the manga. I was glad to see that it was as impressive, if not more, in the anime. I look forward to see the next episode!
Hmm, sounds interesting Aiia. It would be nice to have someone in Japan that could discuss and help fill us in on the episodes heh.

Got around to checking out episode 1 and I definitley like the setup. I enjoy the whole survival sci-fi theme going on. I've peeked at OZ, the manga-ka's other title, and enjoyed that older bent, josei style of sci-fi so I'm looking forward to how this plays out.
The pace is a little brisk, which didn't surprise me seeing as this will only be 11 episodes. I thought Thor arrived at the choice to kill Rai a little to early and easily, even though he didn't go through with it. And all that info about Chimera and the Rings went by so damn fast. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
So yeah, it will be interesting to see if this will go into the whole Lord of the Flies type of views into social structures and behaviors, or will it just be a mystery/adventure as we find out more about the island and Thor/Rai's journey to get back home.

I thought so too, but if they publish the manga in english (or if you can read japanese) you'll be able to get more details. There was a 3-volume reprint released lately (2 of 3 is available right now). The information was presented at a better pace and Thor/Tooru's character was developed at a slower pace.
Its not the easiest manga I've read in Japanese because of some technical and political words...and the fact that from volume 3 (original release) the serial was moved to the josei magazine Melody = no furigana in the whole volume (it's back in volume 4 though). I really recommend the manga if you like the anime. I like Natsumi Itsuki's older art better than her current style which is pretty but less impressive than before for some reason.
I taped episode 3 so I'll watch it today. I wonder when the first DVD will be announced... Other than the pacing of the first episodes I have no complaints with the anime, its a really good adaption of the manga so far.

Yeah, too bad she was "rescued" by Thor during the Musa germination and now she has given up her ranking in order to be with Thor. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Episode 2 was good, although it still was really just a lot more setup regarding the social structure of Chimera: the dueling, rankings, the necklaces, and how the different Rings have certain "rules" in place in order to communicate and get along with each other. Looking forward to when the meat will come after this setup period. This Musa forest has to mean something. Is it just a way to get at the water from deep underground?

And by doing so she's challenging the whole system because its definitely not the way these things are handled on this planet. I still see that as being really independent. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Yeah, they certainly do. I wonder why they settled for 11 episodes. Why not 12 or 13? 1-2 episodes more would probably have left a little more space for explanations.
Episode 3 was really good, and the Musa was beautifully animated. This episode also sees the arrival of Chen, Tiz boss in the Womens Ring. Good action in this episode. A few things are executed differently from the manga but that just made it more exciting, like the Vera Sonia pulling out of the ground and running with Tooru on his back .
Third is such a pretty bishie by the way. /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif
Most of the time it's due to funding. Emma was supposed to go on for 36 episodes, but the funding got cut and they only made 12 due to how high quality the animation was in those episodes.

Another reason beside funding, is TV program scheduling.
I agree with many people's opinion however judging by the first episode, it was fun, interesting and definitly unique. I am becoming a hige fan of noitaminA!

I'm likeing the show so far heh. Although part of me feels guilty for wanting his annoying brother to die(which he did) after seeing the first episode.

Noitamina, Fuji TV's anime slot targetted to college-age women; it's the same branding slot that aired HachiKuro, ParaKiss and Ayakashi (and will presumably air HachiKuro 2 in the summer).
Hmm, interesting Blu. I didn't know that Jyu was aimed at college-age women though heh. Oh well, it's a fun show so far and I'm looking forward to more.

In the previous thread about Jyu-oh-sei I stated that its based on a manga written by a woman, published by Hakusensha. It was serialized in the magazines Melody (women's comics) and LaLa (girl's comics).
The author, Natsumi Itsuki, has also written a seinen manga oneshot for Afternoon called Son of Dawn. But other than that she writes shoujo and josei manga. Eight Cloud Rising (Yakumo Tatsu) has even been released in R1.
I managed to watch the first eposide on the weekend but couldn't post cause I was busy(not now). Any I really liking this show as I especially like the music that's played when the sponsers names are shown at the end of the eposide. The best bit of the eposide for me in eposide 1 is when Thor shows the guy the knife that's his got. /images/graemlins/devil.gif .Despite the short eposide count of this show, this show is in my top 3, of new shows for this season IMO.

Oh my god! thor might be older in this episode but he is still a damn brat! I can't believe he did that to Tiz!
I hope the Karin girl betray Thor because it is so obvious she is in love with Zagi and not thor!

Grown up Tiz is soooooo much hotter than Karin (Karin gets some points for having Romi Paku as her voice). I was pretty mad at that part as well. Also, Nakai Kazuya plays his trademark sword welding characters so well. Definitely one of my favorite male voice actors. Anyways, watching this series makes me want to read the manga even more, but I've been checking around and it doesn't appear to be licensed. For me, it's one thing to watch an anime in japanese without subtitltes....I at least have some understanding of what they're saying and can follow the story...... Reading a manga in japanese, on the other hand. /images/graemlins/depresse.gif I'm patient though.

Man I hate Third after watching this episode. You could tell from the beginning of the series that he had his own agenda and was using Thor to achieve his own goals, but I didn't think he'd do something like this. What's even worse is that Thor hasn't realized it yet. With 2 more episodes left, it'll be interesting to see what happens. For some reason, I keep thinking Rai is going to appear. That has to be who the uniformed guy from the OP is...

I thought it was 12 episodes! Anyway, What third did was really terrible, but he had to because Sagi had thor charmed and all the time and effort third invested in Thor was going to go down the drain. As you saw , Sagi was just going to use Karin to help him influence Thor. I am glad Karin is out of the way, I felt bad after a bit because I found myself cheering when third stabbed her in the heart. I don't care what happens to Thor now. Thor freaking betrayed Tiz and her deserved to be frozen. I was freaking cursing at him when he was telling all the crap to Tiz. He is just scared boy that doesn't want Tiz to leave him alone, but he found himself a honey to amuze himself. Sagi was right when he called Thor a "Gaki".

Well, Thor finally did something right, he is going to make babies with Tiz....If he survives. This episode was really good and revealed a lot of the secrets Zagi was not lying and third was a spy for Odin. That is why he never wanted to be TOP because he knew what was going on. Zagi didn't die, he was just hurt badly.

The whole time I've been watching this show, I had thought that this guy (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v293/marsh-/Random%20Pics/bscap0000.jpg) was Rai. I really did think he survived somehow. Imagine the shock of finding out that it was actually Third. It all makes sense now, however, even though it wasn't hard to figure out. The reason he didn't want to become Top, and the reason he turned down Chen was because of this.
I'm glad Thor opened his eyes and saw what a great girl (Tiz) he has in front of him. Out of all the females in this series, she's clearly the best looking (I don't like Chen's nose. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

I only have to say one thing about the last episode! Those bastard! BIG SPOILERS Tiz takes a bullet from some stupid bastard trying to protect Zagi, because he is thor's friend. Stupid self sacrifice! Tiz died, wasted her life after Thor had agreed to have babies with her. Third killed himself to make Thor go to Tiz, who already was dead. Third had nothing to live for after he found that Earth doesn't exist anymore. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

I felt the exact same way, although I really didn't care about Third. I kind of figured Tiz's fate was sealed after Thor agreed to be with her. too bad Zagi didn't die like he was supposed to, or Tiz would still be there /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif Ah well, I enjoyed 10 eps of this series and won't let 1 ruin the whole thing. I wonder how the manga's storyline plays out and hope that it takes a different direction... Would be nice if it was licensed so I could read it.

Just finished this. Considering how promising the 1st half was, I have to say that this is one of the worst endings I've seen recently. Never has a character's death (Tiz) made me so angry.
Sigh....
Anyhow, I'm wondering what demographic is the manga targeted towards? The subject material suggests seinen but all those endless scenes of hot-looking guys standing suggestively close to each other makes me think that this show was targeted towards women.

Jousei, aka the Female equivalent of Seinen, much like Honey and Clover which also aired in that same time slot, whose prime target is older teen/young adult women.
