I would like to get one or more of the All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku series but don't know which one to start with - are they all stand alone or do I need to watch them in a set order?
Also, is it worth going for the original series, TV and Dash or is one superior to the others?

Each of the three Nuku Nuku series are their own universes, so their is no set order to watching these series. The order that I prefer to watch them in is Original series, TV, and finally Dash.

I'd go with the orginal Nuku Nuku OVAs and see how you feel after that. Its a mixed bag with some good humorous bits. Dash was so-so and I never felt compelled to pick up TV after seeing the ads.

OVAs definitely the best. For animation & tighter story.
If you need more catgirl action afterwards, go for the others, or better still Image's Hyper Police if you don't have it.

Always start with the OVA as it has better character-designs and better story-execution. Better comedy, too.
Then get DASH for a more serious and darker-toned re-telling of the story.
The TV-series is a little more goofier re-telling than both OVA and DASH stories, and pretty much the weakest, imho.
Fwiw, the char-designs between DASH and TV are the same, tho DASH has Nuku^2 as a blonde.

I take it this (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=45132) is the OVA?
Did a bit of a search for Hyper Police too and have got it on my wishlist /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Yes it is. The Original OVA has all six episodes on one disc. TV is 14 episodes over four discs and Dash is 12 episodes over three discs for the singles. Thinpack collections have already been released for both the TV series and the Dash OVA.

An excellent choice if I may say.

It's too bad Hyper Police is so hard to find in physical stores, because I'd like to see it too.
As for Nuku Nuku, I've read a few reviews and from what I've gathered, Dash is inferior to the original OAV and TV series. But since I haven't seen ANY of them, take that with a grain of salt.

OVA is a very nice intro and it's the first in the series.
The TV, second of the series, is a funnier and whacked out version of the OVA. I personally prefer TV over the OVA because I like comedy, especially if you are into old school mecha show or sentai. There's quite a few parody on it.
The newest in the series, as well as my least fav, is Nuku Nuku Dash. It's more of the serious of the 3 with more plot/harem storyline. I personally hated it.

I am a big fan of both of those, so I guess I'm gonna have to check out TV too /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Now that I think about it, you are right. I guess it's due to the "Bad guy come, Nuku2 gets quasi-naked before transforming, beat bad guy, repeat and rinse" formula as well as Ryunosuke's physical attration to Nuku2 that made me think about harem.
Ryunosuke never had physical attration to Nuku2 in the previous series till this one came along which made me despise it.

Well, fwiw, he was a really young kid in the OVA and TV to get the kind of instinctive feelings that the DASH-version presented. /images/graemlins/relief.gif
I couldn't watch DASH because I hate the fact that Nuku-Nuku's character design changed so much. She will forever be a red head to me.

It should also be mentioned that Megumi Hayashibara does Nuku-Nuku, and in the OVA at least did the OP and ED songs too, and they totally rock. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif The OVA has a very frenetic pace and is just wickedly funny. The restaurant episode is probably one of my all time favorite episodes of any anime I've seen.
