View Full Version : Naive, idealistic characters that annoyed you

The naive, idealistic character is one that is reasonably common in anime. He/she is so full of belief that everyone is good and can be rescued from their evil behaviour that he/she often foolishly sees things through rose-tinted eyes and stupidly ends up letting evil people do bad things to others.
Which characters have annoyed you because of their naive idealism? You can also elaborate on a particular scene that really got you annoyed.

Emiya Shirou essentially destroyed any interest I had in Fate/stay night. I still think that the ladies should have killed him off and taken over the show.

Anime? I come across plenty of people like that in real life...

Relena Peacecraft from Gundam Wing. She is easily one of my most hated characters out of all the anime I've seen so far.

Vash is a character like this. A lot of war-themed anime have horribly excruciating characters, often leads, who pull the same "hurt nobody!" crap. Why does this annoy me? Because they wind up letting their "hurt nobody" philosophy put their own friends in danger, because guess what? The bad guys don't share your philosophy, leading-character guy.

After watching the first episode of Planetes, I was thoroughly convinced I was going to hate Ai Tanabe for the entirety of the series, for specifically those reasons. However, I noticed around episode 5 that I wasn't hating her at all, and by the end of the series, she had become one of my favorite characters ever.
Funny how that works out.

Yup, same here. All the makings of an annoyingly idealistic character, yet it somehow works. It's the Power of Love!

I often find it hard to dislike characters who are nieve and idealistic... not because I share their view - not at all, we really must act as the situation demands, in accordance to the threat... however, I do think that a view that shows a level of compassion for human life is not something to look down upon, even if they may be wrong. After all, if all was right in the world, we should all have that view - it's precisely the reason that many human being lack compassion for human life which is one the main problems in society, IMO.
That said, fighting to protect those you hold dear is 'compassion for human life' in itself. Paradox!
I always think back to One Piece. I really dislike the Monkey D. Luffy character, because he shows how you can go too far with the 'fight for what you believe in' philosophy. Regularly getting into fights in the name of 'honor' rather than to protect life - I cannot relate to this. Fighting it not right, we just do it because we MUST do so in order to protect those we care about from harm. I cannot see it as something we would *want* to do (I'm not counting martial arts tournaments etc here, different kettle of fish... I'm just talking little scuffle conflicts with no purpose).
He made the decision to get into conflict with no care about why the conflict is taking place, what the point is - cannot relate to this, how can we fight to protect if we do not know what we are fighting to achieve?
I think the bottom line here is to act according to the situation. A sensible person should see the situation for how it is, and see that fighting can very well be a necessity in protecting life and people from harm. But lets not forget the reason we fight in the first place - life and the people we care about - and I really cannot ridicule those who value this, even if they do not have complete understanding of the situation.

Tanabe started out pretty grating, but got better as the series went on. Character growth maybe? *shrugs*
In all honestly, she's the only character off hand that ever annoyed me with over the top idealism. Usually I just acknowledge a particular character is idealogical and go with it.

I don't know which One Piece you have been watching, but I don't remember seeing Luffy fight for his "honor" ever. He sure as heck lets people make fun of him whenever they please. He mainly fights when his friends are threatened.
Ussop wouldn't be on his crew if he only fought for honor.
He would have been up Gin instead of Don Krieg if he only fought for honor.
He would have gone after Nami for revenge instead of asking her to join back up with his crew if he only fought for honor.
Honestly, I have no idea where you got that idea from. Are you sure that you aren't thinking of some other character besides Luffy? Then again I can't think of any of the characters on Luffy's crew that get into fights solely because their honor is at stake. The closest one is Zoro with his swordsman's pride, however that is a different thing than constantly getting into fights over honor.

I guess I might be focusing too much on that bit where they meet the 2 giants who have been fighting it out on that Island for a hundred years. Luffy seemed to greatly admire them, whereas I just felt it was a load of nonsense that was going to achieve very little.
I suppose I was wrong using One Piece as an example, while I quite like the show, I make no secret of my dislike of the character (it's not even his views I dislike, I more agree with them... just his actions, execution and prioties more than anything).
Your right in the specific examples though. I wasn't really refering to anything specific, more his general attitude (which I suppose goes with him being a 'pirate').

I can't stand Nadia from The Secret of Blue Water. She's a snooty, stuck up little brat. A prime example is when a bad guy tries to shot her from behind, but Captan Nemo kills the bad guy first and she throws a snit about how evil Nemo is. If it was real I'd slap her in her face.

Some folk may be surprised I'm answering this, given my avatar, but I was a bit miffed by Shuzo Matsutani's idealism in Now and Then, Here and There. I consider myself a pacifist for the most part, but he goes a bit overboard at times.

I, on the otherhand, disliked her from the beginning, and my dislike pretty much ended in near hatred by the denouement of the series. I honestly saw her as a complete bubblehead until the end, and her devotion to Hachi in particular thoroughly misplaced.
I really must get around to watching the series over, so I can write up a more in-depth summary of my thoughts on the thing. In general, I've never been so irked by an anime's cast in my time as a fan.

Until the final disc, I felt the same way. How can she have liked Hachi - he was such a jerk. Ai should have seen how like his father Hachi was & how lonely Mrs H. was.
But Ai, could not leave Claire to die on the Moon. Even if it meant losing her own life. And the flashback scene of Ai writhing as she was suffocating when her air ran out still haunts me. Ai became a heroine at the end, in the same way Sailor Moon is (another annoyingly naive but lovable character). Ai is the "magical girl" of Planetes, putting herself before others, and they benefit from her intervention. Ai also saved Edel frpm murdering her (Edel's) pimp husband.

I don't think the whole scene where Relena tries to kill Une really contradicts her idealism. Relena didn't have any political opinions at that time. It wasn't until after she learned the truth about her nationality and some of the history of her nation that she converted to total-pacifism. Her idealism didn't come into play until later. Though, you could still argue that she started out the series as a naieve little girl. She didn't know politics, didn't know the full weight of wars, murder, etc. All she knew was stalking Heero. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
But I'd wager the argument that she wasn't ever simultaneously naieve and idealistic. When her father was murdered and she learned her real past, she lost her innocence and was no longer naieve to what the world was like. I think it's because she lost her innocence, that she decided to become more ideaistic. She saw what the world was really like and wanted to change it. If you want to make a serous effort at changing the world, sometimes you have to become idealistic to get things done, or at the very least to keep your faith in your goals.
Miaka from Fushugi Yugi? She eventually grows out of some of it especially after she learned what happened to Yui but she's still very, very annoying.

I'm not sure...the only two characters I've met with this idealism are Vash the Stampede and Rurouni Kenshin. Both are not allowed on any of these lists, because both characters are fleshed out and fully realized, and neither are annoying.
