View Full Version : Recommendations on Funimation's Summer/Fall releases
There's a nice full page spread in the latest Right Stuff Catalog advertising Funimation's upcoming releases. I was wondering what you all think of them. I am particularly interested in Basilisk and Trinity Blood. The plot synopsis I read about Speed Grapher had me really looking forward to it until I read some negative things about it in the cover art thread (it's in the general forum).

My opinion on those 3 shows in particular
Basilisk - thought it was a great show. Of course, I'm a big fan of ninja shows /images/graemlins/blush100.gif I'm definately picking up it and the manga when available.
Trinity Blood - I liked this one originally. End the end, it was a mess, and accomplished nothing. I might still end up getting it though.
Speed Grapher - Another one I liked at first. The last 10 episodes or so just felt, umm, blah for lack of a better term. I just wanted the show over, but couldnt stop watching it since I had invested that much time in. Probably will NOT buy this one.

I've seen a few episodes of Basilisk and it was pretty cool battle of the freaks. What more could you want? /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

In the case of Negima: if you read the manga already, you may want to stay away from the anime, since Xebec screwed up that title big time.
However, if you're curious about Negima, the anime's still worth checking out, although I'd reccommend the manga over the anime (and I personally stopped watching the Negima anime after episode 19).

I don't know what kind of stuff you tend to watch, but I feel that the best show Funimation has coming this year is Tsukuyomi ~Moon Phase~, followed by either KGNE (Rumbling Hearts) or Basilisk. I can't decide between the two because they're so completely and utterly different, and I only saw 7 episodes of Basilisk.
Of course if they ever announce Beck, that there is their best release of the year (or damn close to Tsukuyomi at the very least)... but I have no idea what is going on with that show anymore.
I tend to stay away from the comedies and such, prefering things like Samurai 7, Giant Robo (all time favorite), as well as some supernatural stuff like Witch Hunter Robin, and X. I just started Mai-Hime and like it alot, even if it does seem cliched at times. Of course, I like the usual titles as well; Eva, Escaflowne, Macross Plus and some less hyped stuff like Shamanic Princess.

Hmm. Hard to say where Tsukuyomi would fall. It certainly is comedy in some ways, rather funny comedy at that, but the main story is quite serious and the character development in Hazuki is great. In the end I have no idea if you'd like it.
KGNE is not comedy really at all (well aside from Ayu and Mayu's skits at the end of the eps). It's hardcore angsty romance.
Beck is also very funny but quite serious. Granted, I guess it helps to like rock music (even if not their particular blend of it), at least insofar as you won't mind a show about a band. It's pretty mature overall, despite the young age of the characters (high school or so).
And, again, assuming Funi ever does Beck >_>
I guess what my the titles in my collection have most in common is a strong SF Fantasy component. I probably wouldn't care much for a more reality based anime. (i.e. sports, high school, racing, etc.)

Then Basilisk is the thing for you. I would cautiously recommend Speed Grapher as well; it's interesting and somewhat original, but it suffers a little in terms of how it's executed. It seems as if Funi is giving it a top-notch release, though, so that might help tip the balance...
