I'll keep this short and sweet because I'm tired....
which season is better?
can I start with "Something More Beautiful" if I know the basics of the original season?
is there any news of a complete collection coming out for M2:SMB?

I like both seasons. Mahoromatic is one of my favorite shows. I have watched it three times (except for the ending).
I hate the ending of Something More Beautiful.
But still, if I could watch only one season I would choose SMB. That is mostly because it has Minawa, and she is the kind of character that I really like.
You can start with SMB if you know who the characters are and what the general situation is.
If you like the second season you should also like the first season. I strongly suggest that you do not skip the first season, but doing that would not prevent you from enjoying the second season. In my opinion.

There is a thinpack release of all 27 episodes (both seasons and the Summer Special) out right now. I have the singles with the artbox that came with the Summer Special disc.
But I have another question for everyone. Where (during Season 2: Something More Beautiful) would you watch the Summer Special to fit with the series timeline?
For my viewing that I just finished watching the whole series over again recently, I watched that episode right after the Hiryu Dark Martial Arts Tournament Festival (Season 2: Episode 7) before watching Suguru's Grandfather visit the house in Episode 8.

I do not watch it during the series. I watch it after I have finished the series (mostly because I just do not think of it) or by itself. I have not seen the series for about six months, but I watched the Summer Special just last week.
I really believe that it does not matter when you watch it. I do not remember anything in the special that fixes it in time, other than the fact that it must come before the last three episodes.

I personally didn't like season 2 nearly as much, for the reasons that the ending wasn't so hot and I didn't care for Minawa. Heck, I bought the 3 season 1 discs and didn't buy the rest because I disliked it.

I actually watch it at the end of the series, more or less to get the taste of that awful ending out of my mouth.
But I'm guessing it would fit pretty well right after ep. 9 of SMB maybe (?).

Aww...the ending isn't that bad.

I'm not so sure it would work there as the end of ep. 9 ties into the next episode (10) where Feldrance is begining to set up the operation to capture Suguru as a way to trap Mahoro.

No, not that bad, but not especially great either, and I agree with the earlier point of watching the Summer Special to get over the ending.
I do want to mention that the manga has a whole lot more causality and background for the ending, which is largely the same in the animé but doesn't have the support it needs. I loved the manga version of the ending, which has informed my view of the animé version to the point that I can watch and understand it, though I think they could have used another episode to bring in more of the manga material. I do think that the artificial limit of 26 episodes is a bit foolish and works often to the detriment of the show (Trigun).

That's right, I had forgotten about that. It just feels weird watching a "summer special" before a Valentine's day episode. Perhaps after the episode when Grandpa drops by then?

Only three days pass between those two episodes (8 and 9) and it seemed like a little bit more time than that passed during that story. I'm figuring either before or after episode 7 where there is more time between episodes to work this story in and assuming that Suguru has recieved that rare magazine from Chizuko already.

aww, sweet! I had seen it in the reviews section, but didn't realize it had both seasons. Ooh, now I can't resist. I really need to get back into some of the "older" titles... well, the series that aired before I became an anime fan... I don't think many people consider 2002-2003 "old."
thanks for the input everyone, I appreciate it

The raison d'etre of Mahoromatic is disk 5 (aka, the second disk of "Something More Beautiful").
Perhaps the single most perfect disk of anime comedy I've ever seen.

Yup, total bliss on a disk. Everything just works, and works very well.

Personally, I loved Mahoromatic Season 1.
Unfortunately, all the potential that it had at the end of the First Season it seemed to squander once the second season started. The fanservice was turned up a notch and everything just got dumber.
So, I can't speak to the ending since I couldn't get through the first disk of Season 2, but the first season is excellent.
