I'd like some opinions about Sunabozu and Viewtiful Joe. From some pics I've seen, the character designs look horribly unappealing to me but how's the story?

Sunabozu the main characters one ugly fuck that's true. The show itself isn't the greatest thing I've ever seen and I know it won't become it but it's not bad. The villans are really odd to say the least and well make no sense but it's pretty funny as a result. I've only seen the first volume though. I hope that helps.

Just to let you know, the R1 Viewtiful Joe DVDs are English language only and (IIRC) edited.
Stick with the games.

Sunabozu is an Ugly Fuck with an Ugly Attitude, living in a Ugly World, Working as the best in an Ugly Job... a decent apocalyptic actioneer with a big dose of comedy and an echii attitude as the main character is a perv /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Yeah - I agree. I didn't get past the first episode. If it's available, maybe rent it first to see what you think, but I'd avoid it to be honest.

Sunabozu (aka: Desert Punk (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/4799.php)) even has a TV-MA rating which is a novelty too. Lines like "Ain't gonna happen again, Tits McGee" make it worthy in my book. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

It reminds me of 70% Trigun with 30% FMP! but more ecchi. More evil momments that'll make you say "That's just... wrong. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif" too. The plot is also amusing and not nearly as predictable as some shows. Still it's pretty episodic and I can't comment on the ending. It's not another block-buster GitS:SAC or anything of that caliber either so don't go into it with inflated expectations. Definately one of the best shows from Gonzo in a while though.

I thought the same as Puppet Master after the first volume. But I recently watched volume 2 and I can tell this is my kinda guy. Desert Punk is one crazy psychotic I know I will be able to love throughout the show. His allegiance to no one but himself and determination to exact revenge is purely kickass. Now that I think about it he reminds me of Gokudo.

If the show maintains what I've seen in v1 and 2 I'm confident it can make it into my favorites. And to think I wasn't excited when v2 came in the mail. Now it's my 2nd most anticipated show next to Fighting Spirit.

70% Trigun = Mainly desert setting with lots of guns and outlaws.

30% FMP! = This is harder to quantify. Probably because of the attention to detail of the weapons. Not to say they behave in a realistic manner but they're usually all based off semi-realistic weapons (ie: no gigawatt ion cannons). Also the way the main male character can kick ass when he tries. No mechs though, at least not in what I've seen of the show so far.

Screw Viewtiful Joe. Get Sunabozu.

I want you to know where I'm coming from when I say this: I like some dubs. I'm an advocate for them, and I watch probably 50% of my anime dubbed. If I think a dub is bad, I watch the original Japanese version. Otherwise, I'd rather pay attention to what's going on on-screen, that have to read subtitles.

That said, the lack of a Japanese track makes Viewtiful Joe completely unwatchable. I want the option to see it in it's original form, regardless of how good or bad the dub is.

I'm currently watching City Hunter, which has no English dub. This is fine, because I am not losing anything from the original broadcast. But turn the tables, and it becomes unacceptable.

No contest, Sunabozu for the win. It's a better show overall anyway, if you ask me.

Not that I've seen. It's Gonzo, not Gainax. The ecchi is more about the crudeness of the jokes than the outright flashing of nipples.

I'm really liking Desert Punk. It's a awesomely fun show to watch, and the dub, while deviating from the Japanese quite a bit sometimes, is quite funny.

Ok. Thanks for the various opinions.
I checked an episode of Viewtiful Joe through Newtype USA's disc. It felt very average. It is not as bad as some of you are making it out to be but neither is it good. Since most people have been negative about it (and the lack of a Japanese version is annoying), I'll skip on it.
I got the 1st volume of Desert Punk and just saw the 1st 2 episodes. The OP has to be one of the most bizarre that I have ever seen . The character designs for the male characters has to be some of the most horrible that I have ever seen and the action scenes are lame. Hard to believe that this is from GONZO. However a few jokes did hit the right spot and did make me laugh. Then there's also the big boobs. /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif I'm still undecided but maybe I'll give it another volume before deciding whether to continue.

Ok unless there's been a complete character 180 between V1 and v2,why exactly do you think Sunabozo has plans to take advantage of Kosuna? At the end of V1 she basically threw herself at him and he turned her away. As for the other part, well frankly Tits McGee (I love that name /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif.) deserved it, being as manipulative as she was. Sometime ya gotta pay the piper sweetheart and its not like he did anything that would scar someone for life.

Just a suggustion, if your going to go with Viewtiful Joe, go with the Japanese R2 DVDs (regardless of being expensive). However, I'd really recommend finding a way of seeing the first two episodes in Japanese before you do this.
