I seem to rememeber another topic about this long ago but I couldn't find anything in a search. If someone else can lead me to the original thread I'll just lock this or whatever.
I'm considering getting the Trigun tins through RightStuf. I already own the original case so I'm wondering how much of an improvement the tins offer in comparison to the original. Has anyone here bought the tins and if so, how are they? Any help is appreciated.

Absolutely! I personally upgraded from the Signature Series discs to the new tins but I did have a friend with the old boxset and I can say the new releases are so much better than the old. The new artwork is phenomenal and the remastered video is gorgeous. Trigun is the first -- and so far only -- series I'd double-dipped on and I've absolutely no regrets.

I was thinking of these tins myself...Can't find the original boxset ANYWHERE at a good price and I have all the current manga so I might as well bite. I know this is kind of dumb, but can somebody post some pics (or links) of what the tins look like next to other DVD's?
The new Trigun discs are a definite buy. However, it has been a while since they were released so it may not be much longer until they release some sort of collection that might be a bit cheaper.

Ooooh, improved video? That's what I was hoping for. So I assume they also improved the audio as well? And how are the extras? Or...are there any extras (sometimes these re-releases don't have 'em for some reason /images/graemlins/depresse.gif)

RE: possibility of a new set
Well, TSRI's price still makes it worthwhile buying them separate right now. They're 57.99 each on sale.
edit2-
I'm curious, how is the construction of the tin? I mean, are the discs securely fastened in there? Is the tin well constructed? etc.

> improved video
I don't have the set-up nor knowledge to judge the quality of a video encode, but at the very least, this time around Geneon used the correct, episode-specific Openings, rather than using the same one for all the episodes.
Also, note that previous releases were 8 discs; this one is only 6.
> improved audio
Yes, if you think 5.1 audio for both English & Japanese audio tracks is an improvement over stereo. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
> extras
lots - textless OP & ED; various line art design segments (characters, mecha, weapons, etc); tv spots; covers of the Japanese video releases; etc.
Oh, and I believe all the art (front pieces of the tins and case covers) is Nightow work not used in any of the earlier releases.
> construction of the tin
They're a bit taller and wider (half an inch or less) than a standard case, and not quite as thick as two standard cases. The discs are not attached to the tin directly, rather the tins each contain three thinpack cases, with 1 disc per case. The tins are well constructed and secure; they're designed as individual front and back segments that separate completely (i.e., not hinged).

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty much sold on this but will probably wait a day or two to make the actual order.

I plan on buying these in a couple weeks.

K, I purchased both sets through the RightStuf weekly specials this morning. Excellent deal, even if gotanime doesn't apply to those items. I also got a nifty FMA keychain and the final volume of Dead End. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I thought so. I'm not qualified to judge the improvements made to the video quality, but the sound on these new discs...wow. They sound better than the CD soundtrack to me, actually. That alone was worth the double-dip to me, seeing as how many sound effects are in this show.
It goes without saying that the tins are lovely, and Nightow's artwork on the covers, including the head shots on the reverse, was a nice touch.
The only thing that really seems to be off here is the ending sequence, which seems to be the same as the older release, with no touch-ups or subbed credits, as with the opening.
A small, relatively unimportant point of fact is that Nightjar again handled the menus for this release, but they're not nearly as fun nor as creative as those found in the original eight-disc release. They're basically a take-off of the menu design for the sixth or seventh volume, repeated on each and every disc.

Huh, that's interesting. Or dissapointing. Trigun was basically their first big project and what made them popular back on the early days of DVD and this site.
Maybe I should also hold onto the old discs for the menus alone? /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Let me tell ya, if I hadn't promised my older set to my brother, I would have done just that, for the nostalgia. It's the second time I make that kind of mistake - the first was with my Gunsmith Cats double-dip. I love having actual chapter stops for the "making of" video, but all of the moving menus and sound effects to go with them are gone. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif
Eh, maybe I'll free up some cash someday and buy the original discs again, used and cheap. Maybe Right Stuf will put them in that bargain bin of theirs...

Luckily, I don't care about menus that much. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
