View Full Version : Characters you'd like to see cry

While it is true that most of us cannot stand too much crying, there are moments when unexpected crying of a character helps to develop the character more and help the audience to sympathize with him/her.
Take for example:
Eureka 7 (eps 33 or so)
Holland at this point had been acting like your stereotypical tough guy and had also been acting like a real jerk to Renton. However, when he suddenly breaks down and cries, we get to see another more sensitive side of him and he becomes more of a likable character.
Ichigo Mashimaro (ep 5)
At this point, Miu seemed nothing more than a younger clone of Azumanga Daoih's Tomo - the overactive character that delights in annoying others. Her sudden bursting into tears reveals that she is actually a very lonely girl that wants love and attention. Suddenly she becomes a character with more depth in 5 episodes than Tomo ever did in 26 episodes.
Which anime characters would you like to see cry and why?

Harry MacDowel- It was interesting to see his real emotions in the aftermath of shooting Brandon. Of course, one of my scenes was in the the final episodes when he is driving with his dead wife Sherry by his side. Of course nothing tops when in the last episode when both Harry with Brandon are both shot and Brandon finally gives reason why he couldn't kill Harry thus gives one of the most emotional powerful scenes I ever felt in anime. Still gets me a little teared up just thinking about those scenes.

Yes but the topic is talking about characters that you would like to see cry. Did they cry in those scenes?

But I'm talking more about characters who didn't cry that you would like to see cry. The examples I gave were to illustrate how effective they will be in developing a character.

*sigh*
Wouldn't the topic be better if it had characters who did cry? I mean, topics like this just scream out "wishful thinking" and just don't accept the characters (and stories) as they were....
Sorry if I offended ya but I definetly read it wrong then.

Grave of the Fireflies - During the scene where Seita finds his mother in such a sad state, I expected him to cry or even show a bit more emotion than he did. It was only towards the end that he showed just the least bit sad, but it came too little, too late for me. If he had reacted the way I expected him to, I might have actually grown to sympathize with him in the end and might have made a better connection with him. That was probably one of the better scenes in the movie but seemed to just miss the mark with the way that character reacted. From that point on, I just felt increasingly disatisfied with the movie and just left disappointed with the overall lack of emotion it evoked from me.

Sesshoumaru from InuYasha. He becomes a lot less mean as the show progresses, and having him crying would show that he is getting more in touch with his emotions.

This may seem contrary to the spirit of this thread, but...
When those scenes and characters from Grave of the Fireflies and Cowboy Bebop were mentioned, it made me reflect that, for me, there's actually something very moving about seeing a character unable to cry, or even unwilling to let themselves cry. I don't think crying is necessarily the only appropriate response to extremely emotional situations, and sometimes it's interesting for a work to explore other reactions, or even the way in which people hide their reactions.
Which I guess just means that, going from the original post, I wouldn't agree that Seita or Faye belong in this thread. I haven't seen the other titles mentioned, so my comment isn't directed toward them.

You have to remember that Seita in GotF would've been under tremendous social pressure to not show any emotions publicly. Even in today's Japan, a male showing emotion (especially losing control of one's emotions) in public is considered extremely childish behavior. So Seita, being the oldest son of a military family, would especially be expected to "take it like a man." Public stoicism is expected.
Seeing a character "lose it" in Japanese shows has a very strong effect on Japanese audiences, I suspect much stronger than any effect on western audiences seeing the same event.
Chara I'd like to see cry? Gendo from Evangelion.

Well wishful thinking isn't always a bad thing. Still in my own personal case I can't name a specific character. It's not that I'm against crying. Unlike some people, I don't think it's a crime for characters to actually show emotion. I also don't have the delusion that if I was in the same situation I'd be uber perfect.
However just simply saying X should cry for the heck of it does not work for me. It's more of a situational thing for me. Ie if X gets into a situation where it makes sense for X to cry then fine. If the crying is just slapped on for sudden forced character change then it's stupid.
So by that token I can't mention any specific character. Now if a character got into a situation where they did cry then I could think in terms of good scene or bad scene.

Well there's a lot of wishful thinking amongst anime fans with characters they'd like to xxx with. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
