Not really.

It is directly connected to Zeta, but doesn't have a huge effect on the overall Char/Amuro meta-arc.

Zeta does not have that much effect on Char & Amauro. Amauro's situation after the OYW is interesting, he has some influence on Camille & is a lead in 1 or 2 arcs, but nothing more than that.

ZZ features MSG & Zeta characters who survived the original & Zeta. It has an appeal of its own to me for characters & story. Its animation & mechas is better than the previous series - I prefer the designs to Wing.

Judeau, Elle, Sarasa, Rasara, Plu & Rina. Hamann, Bright & Kara - all are fun to watch. In Zeta only Emma, Reccoa, Scirocco & sometimes Camille were any good.

I am wondering if it is cause it's pretty much the only Gundam movie/series from the original series that I know of that hasn't come out here officially (unless I am missing another).

You're Missing Victory Gundam (UC 0153)

Is it needed or directly connected with the events after the first Z seires (mind you I didn't see Z yet so no spoilers for anything please)?

It tells the story of the Survivers of Zeta Gundam(not including Amuro or Char, they story gets resolved in the Char's CounterAttack movie) as they face the menace of Neo-Zeon

Honestly, you could go without it as no real mention of Char or Amuro is made, except in the final episode during a conversation between Bright Noah and Sayla Mass. You could just jump from Zeta to Char's Counterattack and still be pretty entertained and informed.

Except that you'd miss Hamann Kahn and the biggest, most detailed colony drop in UC. Also ZZ has the continuation of Camille & Fa's story as well. Lost of Qubeley suits.

Gundam UC is not just about Amauro & Char. Sure they are major influential players on & off, but there is much more as well.

Beware - Wrath of the Njr is a devout ZZ follower. A more considered opinion is that there are some episodes that so terrible you never want to watch anime again, and some that are the equal of Zeta.

I watched it because I felt that Zeta just sort of stopped mid-story, and I wanted to know what happened to all the factions after the final episode. ZZ frustrated for nearly 20 episodes before it began to address them again, and even then it got a bit silly, getting very confused by the difference between AEUG and the Earth forces (although that may have been the fansub translation).

The colony drop is seen close-up, but I was a bit surprised, considering the levels of devastation we've seen in the past, how so many people survived being right next to it....

I hope we get this series soon...
